Community Crew News #36
May 4th, 2024
Greetings Conway Community!
Today our students joined hundreds of students across the country to commemorate EL Education’s “Better World Day,” a day of student service and civic action to create positive change in their communities. Our theme for Better Word Day is Literacy Makes Dreams Come True at Conway Academy. This theme came about because of our 6th grade’s expedition. They discovered in their research that California has one of the lowest literacy rates in the United States. And so, our purpose for this day is to change those stats by bringing our whole community together to read and share how literature can change lives and make dreams come true. We have police officers, firefighters, city council members, our district’s Deputy superintendent and all of our parents and families gathering here today to engage in literacy activities, book exchanges and a very special community literacy picnic.
This Better World Day project matters because literacy is the great equalizer in society.
Literacy is fundamental to individual empowerment, serving as a gateway to knowledge and opportunity.
It was an incredible day of community bonding, outdoor learning, and student leadership! We appreciate all our community members that came out to read to our students today. A special thank you goes out to Councilman, Joe Garcia, Officer Erick Johnston, Fire Captain, Ryan Brumback, Escondido Education Foundation board members, Mrs. Royner & Pam Putnicki, Deputy Superintendent, Dr. Philyaw, PTA members, and especially all parent volunteers for your time in making today possible.
The many hands, hearts, and minds that came together in CREW to cultivate a love of reading was felt across our school. There was not doubt that the spirit of CREW permeated throughout our entire campus and it ignited something beyond our school. The purpose for this day is to change those dismal California literacy stats by bringing our whole community together to read and share how literature can change lives and make dreams come true. Mahatma Gandhi said, "Be the change we want to see in the world" and our Conway cougars will! It begins here with our Conway Crew!

6th Grade Pano Photo
Our 6th graders begin this final month of learning and preparing for the transition to middle school next year. This week, they lead our entire school on Better World Day. They also stood for our annual panoramic photograph. This is a pretty amazing group of learners and know they will take our CREW spirit where ever they go.
