October is for Outdoor and Off Campus Learning!
LYNX scholars in grades 9-12 participated in 30 LYNX experiences in October, which included learning opportunities outdoors, off campus, at FHS, and in class. For example, students explored Waterford Park with Virginia Brace, attended the Green Careers Fair and toured Frederick Community College and Mount Saint Mary's University!
All 10th graders also received "Power Skills" instruction during Advocacy from 21 LYNX partners on the topic: "The Importance of First Impressions."
The "Student Voices" section below features just a few quotes from extensive feedback collected after a wide variety of career experiences in October, followed by a list of our November 2024 LYNX experiences and brief "Photo Gallery" highlighting FHS students in action! Many thanks to all of our LYNX partners who provide learning opportunities for our scholars!
Student Voices: I Learned...
I learned different job opportunities in taking care of nature and trees and that soon there will be a 7 mile loop that you can bike on (at Waterford Park). It surprised me that the park was a non-profit and that the workers were volunteers. This experience helped show me what it takes to work in this job field and also what it is like working outside.
I learned so much from this LYNX experience! I learned that there are offensive and defensive positions. The offensive position targets the defensive side's vulnerabilities and the defensive side tries to prevent and do their best to limit the amount of vulnerabilities. I also learned some great life strategies like how to be persistent, that failure is not an identity– it is just a roadblock you have to overcome.
The activity we did with construction drawings helped me understand what exactly goes into an office building. There’s so much work that goes into what a space looks like.
I learned a lot about starting a business and the principles I need for a business. I learned the marketing skills I need and the reassurance that it may fail, but keep trying. I was surprised to learn that the most important marketing is people themselves, and just talking and through word of mouth.
I was curious about law enforcement opportunities and wanted to learn more about it. There were too many takeaways to write down! Officer Lee was great!
The experience helped me learn the tactics people take advantage of using AI and also some things you can do to advance your career. I appreciated the advice that "everybody has a superpower" even though most of us don't try to look for it.
