March Board of Education Notes
March 2025

Meeting Recap
The District 146 Board of Education held its regular monthly meeting at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 10, 2025 at the Robert Procunier Administration Center.
During the meeting, the Board heard the following from Superintendent Dr. Jeff Stawick:
- Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled for March 20 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Elementary families will be invited to schedule their appointments online. Central Middle School will host an open-schedule with no appointments necessary.
- Report cards for Trimester 2 were sent out on Monday.
- Two new reading programs are being tested in K-5 classrooms, Amplify CKLA and HMH Into Reading. The Curriculum Department will gather staff feedback on the programs to assure they meet the needs of students.
- CMS has announced the 8th grade field trip to Washington, D.C. for the 2025-2026 school year. A parent information meeting for 7th grade families (next year’s 8th graders) is scheduled for March 12.
- Central Middle School hosted the SWIC Girls Volleyball Tournament. Dr. Stawick thanked staff and the CMS Builder’s Club for their work making the event a success.
- CMS will be hosting its talent show on March 13 and 14. The District’s Choral Festival is scheduled for March 18. More information can be found on the District website.
- Cindy Chor coached her final home volleyball game after a 27-year coaching career. CMS staff, former players, and fellow coaches showed their support at her final game.
The Board also heard the following:

- Jeff Charleston, Director of Business and CSBO, presented the five year financial forecast.
- The President of the Teachers Union gave an update from each of the schools, including the activities focused on Black History Month and Women’s History Month, upcoming science fairs, successful fundraisers, and exciting read-a-thons.
- Jeff Charleston also informed the Board that the food service contract with Whitsons is up for renewal. The Board will be asked to approve the contract at the April meeting.
The Board took the following action at the meeting:
- Approved the 2025-2026 school calendar.
- Approved the policy changes introduced at the February meeting.
- Approved a temporary waiver of a board policy to allow an unopposed candidate for the Board of Education to attend closed session meetings. Current Board Policy restricts candidates access to closed session.

- Approved a $2.3 million property tax abatement. This will be the first of two abatements for the 2025 Property Tax Relief Grant.
Before adjourning, the Board met in Closed Session to discuss personnel and collective bargaining matters.
The minutes of the March meeting will be available on BoardDocs once approved by the Board of Education at the next meeting. A recording of the meeting can be viewed on the District's YouTube Channel.

The District’s Calendar Committee, made up of administrators, teachers, and staff, creates a proposed academic calendar, which is then recommended to Board of Education for approval. Once approved by the District 146 Board of Education, the school calendar must be approved by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). ISBE reviews the calendar for compliance with guidelines such as minimum student attendance days, staff development, and legal holidays.
The calendar is released to the public following approval by both Boards.

Minutes from the most recent meeting will be posted to BoardDocs after the Board of Education approves them at the following month's meeting.
