Miss Fuchs' Math Updates!
Friday, March 16th
Important Dates:
- Monday, March 19- Calendar and Time Test
- Friday, March 23- Homework Packet #23 due
Numbers to 120:
In this chapter, your child will study numbers to 100. We will review number sense and add on to skills we have already learned. It is important to build our number sense, and manipulate numbers in different ways, so then we can understand how to add and subtract them!
Some of the skills your child will practice are:
- counting on, reading, and writing up to 100 in numbers and words
- using a place-value chart and showing objects up to 100 as tens and ones
- using a strategy to compare and order numbers
- finding the missing number in a number pattern
Chapter 15: Calendar and Time
In this chapter, your child will learn to read calendars and clocks. Students will learn to read both analog and digital clocks, and then orally tell and write time. Students need experiences exploring the idea that when the time is at the half-hour the hour hand is between numbers and not on a number. Further, the hour is the number before where the hour hand is. For example the clock at the right, the time is 8:30. The hour hand is between the 8 and 9, but the hour is 8 since it is not yet on the 9.
We will work on the following skills:
- Reading a calendar and knowing the days of the week, months, seasons of the year, and writing the date
- reading and showing time to the hour and half hour on a clock
- relating time to daily activities
- identifying the minute and hour hand on the clock
Some Extra Practice: Mental Math Strategies
We have been reviewing mental math strategies each morning as a quick warm up in class. Also, I have incorporated a review center on the different skills we have learned this year in math!
Some mental math strategies we have learned are:
- adding or subtracting the ones
- adding or subtracting the tens
- doubles facts
- doubles plus one facts
- recalling number bonds and fact families
An easy way to practice these skills at home are quick flash cards of addition and subtraction without regrouping. Or using worksheets and timing how fast your child can complete them, or have them try to beat the clock!
