Tip of the Week
I heard some students talking about the Be Real App this week. I hadn't heard of it before. Thought I'd share some information so you can make an informed decision for your children.
Letter from Mrs. Willhoite
Dear Oakdale Families,
November is a month of thankfulness and family. One thing I am always grateful for is our Oakdale community - it is a family of sorts. We lean on each other and help each other be the best we can be, and there's no better place to teach than Oakdale School because of it. So, thank you!
Chromebook charging:
This is a reminder to set an alarm to make sure you child is charging his/her chromebook each night. Teachers are seeing an increase of dead batteries which hinders a student's ability to access necessary items.

Veterans Day Assembly - Nov. 11
Each year one of our favorite days is Veterans Day! We love to celebrate those who have and are committed to keeping America safe. If you are or know a veteran or someone who is active duty military, please come to one of our 2 Veterans Day assemblies. Also, we encourage our students to submit a speech if they have someone in their family they'd like to honor. The students have the form in their email (sent this morning) where they can submit a speech. If they are not chosen to speak, they will still have a part in the assembly.
Dear Oakdale Families,
As we prepare for our upcoming Veteran's Day assembly on November 11th, we invite you to submit the Veteran Form if you have any Veterans or active-duty military members in your family. If possible, please include a picture of your family member in uniform, as we will feature them in our slideshow during the event.
If you have submitted this form in previous years, your slide is still included in the slideshow, and there is no need to resubmit.
Please ensure that your submission is completed as soon as possible so that we can honor all the Veterans in our Oakdale community.
Thank you for your participation, and we look forward to a meaningful celebration of our heroes! Submissions are due by Wednesday, Nov. 6th.
Thanks,
Jill Willhoite

A Note from the Nurse
Medication at School
Reminder: All medication at school needs to be kept in the office with a completed Authorization for the Administration of Medication Form (AAMF). The exceptions for medications: asthma, anaphylaxis, diabetes, and pancreatic enzymes may be carried by the student with a completed Authorization for the Administration of Medication Form filed in the nurse's office.
From the Oakdale Student Handbook:
An Authorization for the Administration of Medication Form (AAMF) must be completed and returned to the school before medication can be administered by school personnel. The only medications students are allowed to carry and self-administer during school or school activities are asthma, anaphylaxis, diabetes and replacement pancreatic enzymes, and a completed AAMF form is required.
If your student has a health condition that may affect their school day, please complete this form:
Well, that was a fun month! October brought us National Anti-Bullying and Red Ribbon Awareness Month. We learned the difference between disagreements, rude moments, mean moments, and bullying. The importance of standing up for yourself and others and using kind words.
Red Ribbon Week has been a success! Making positive and healthy choices, understanding the effects of drugs and alcohol on one's decision making and brain health, how to be successful in high school, and much, much more! We ended the week by having a guest speaker ........
Attached is a video on the drug Fentanyl. Next week, we would like to show just that video to the 7th & 8th graders to educate them on the seriousness of this drug!
We are so proud of the students and the spirit they showed this week, while also understanding the importance of making healthy life choices!
So proud of all of our students!

Library Curriculum Nov. 4-8th
As we prepare to honor our military servicemen and servicewomen on Veterans Day, the following books and lessons will be conducted in the library classes this week:
6th Grade will read The Poppy Lady: Moina Belle Michael and her Tribute to Veterans by Barbara Elizabeth Walsh and make paper poppies to display for the Veterans Day Assembly.
7th Grade will read Twenty-one Steps: Guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by Jeff Gottesfeld and write 21 words of gratitude to veterans that will be collaged into a large American flag.
8th grade will complete a Veterans Day webquest where they will research various topics, such as the history of Veterans Day, medal of honor, branches of the military, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, as well as various war memorials. Students will also view this video to better understand what it's like to be a sentinel at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Sequoyah Book Contest Info
The Oakdale Middle School Library's Sequoyah Contest is underway. I have a few more classes to talk to on Monday, but most students have been given the information. If students choose, they can read Sequoyah books and receive prizes throughout the year. See the attached graphic for specific dates and prizes. Students can listen to audiobooks, read an e-book version on a device, or read a physical book for it to count in the contest. Since students had a preview of the books at our Sequoyah Book Kick-off on Oct. 11th, they are very excited and ready to get started!
Reading from the Sequoyah List and participating in the contest are completely optional and not required in any way.
