10 February 2023
Welcome back and welcome to our new students, staff and whanau to Rosehill College. It is always exciting at the beginning of the year as students return to school. The beginning of the year is an opportunity for students to revisit and reset their learning goals.
Our focus for 2023 is ‘High Expectations’, teachers have been asked to reflect on what this means for them, and teachers will
Set up the learning environment to ensure success.
They will set ambitious goals for your child and present engaging yet challenging material.
They will ensure that your child has multiple opportunities to practice and apply a new skill.
And
If your child isn't getting it, they don’t blame the student but rather look at themselves and think, “What am I missing? What is it about my teaching that isn't working for this student? What additional support do they need?”
Teachers understand that every student is different and every student deserves an opportunity to learn.
But this also means for students High Expectations are to
Arrive to school and class on time
Having a 95% attendance rate
Wear the correct school uniform properly and with pride
Engage with their learning and with their teachers, which means they too take responsibility for their learning
Respect themselves, each other and our school- be kind
A common question I always get asked, what about homework?
Whether it is set homework tasks from the teachers or whether it's reviewing the notes from the subjects on that day, reading a book or researching - there is always learning that can be done at home - Students don't have to wait for a teacher to set their tasks or just complete the bare minimum. Take initiative and research what their topic is within that subject. Be prepared for their next lesson - if they don't understand something make a note of it to ask their teacher the next day.
We have weekly reports that will go out to parents - these reports are an opportunity to discuss what is happening in subjects with your child. Further information will be sent out to parents at a later date, but I encourage parents to check these weekly reports.
Today I addressed the whole student body and reminded our students that they are at an age where they know and understand what is up and down, left and right, right and wrong so they also know how we behave.
Cell phones and devices including earplugs and headphones are items that can lead to further issues and concerns - students do not need to be told how to use these properly. They know what is right and what is wrong.
Teachers do have the right to confiscate these items if students are not following the rules of their classroom, but again I have told students not to put themselves and their teachers in a position that no one wants to be in.
Social media as we all know can create and cause students to be distracted from their learning, and like many schools across New Zealand we are working hard to educate our students to keep themselves safe. But of course we need your help and support with educating our children on the edicatey on using social media platforms.
We have a school uniform that identifies students as Rosehill College students - so it is important students wear the correct school uniform. We have school caps and bucket hats. Our school shoes are black lace up or black sandals with a back strap.
There are no accessories like sunglasses that are not medically required and non uniform caps or hats, beanies included, crocs and slides are not our school uniform.
So please ensure your children understand these rules.
I also spoke to our students about illegal substances which includes vaping and these are not allowed in our school or any school in New Zealand. So parents please make sure your children understand this. Again, no one wants to be placed in a position of conflict.
I have asked students to also look after our school environment as we work through upgrading our classrooms and teaching spaces. Gum has become a problem and is banned from school. So again parents can you please remind students of this.
We have over 1500 students here at Rosehill College with over 150 staff members, within a confined space, so it is very important that we understand these rules and we understand what acceptable behaviour is.
School Rules are to keep everyone safe, at Rosehill College there is an expectation that we act and behaviour in a way that is respectful, and caring - Manaakitanga.
Please encourage your child to get involved in these extra curricular activities and to enjoy school, make good memories and take a chance.

New Staff Profiles:
Here are some of the new support staff that have joined us at Rosehill College, here is a little about themselves:
Mr Jarrod Mealings - Sports Co-ordinator
I have come to Rosehill College from the University of Canterbury where I gained a Bachelor of Sports Coaching. My major was Sports management and my minor was Performance Analysis.
I am 22 years of age and this is my first degree driven job. If you haven't guessed yet, I am a sports fanatic and love playing or watching when I can. My favourite teams are the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, Houston Rockets and Pitsburgh Steelers.
So far I have really enjoyed myself here at Rosehill College and look forward to strengthening the sports department and helping the kids reach their sporting aspirations.
Mrs Laura Williams - Registered Nurse
I have been in the youth health field for the last 5 years. I’m passionate about working in the same community I live in-so jumped at the chance to work at Rosehill College as I live in Papakura with my husband and 11 month old son.
I graduated in 2015 with a Bachelor of Nursing and in 2021 I graduated with a Post Graduate Diploma in Health Sciences-Youth Health at Auckland University.
I am passionate about our young people reaching their full potential and believe wholeheartedly that health and education go hand in hand. I look forward to working alongside those I meet on their journey at Rosehill College.
New Student and Parent Evening
Welcome to Rosehill College. We hope that new students have started to feel like they belong and can contribute to our school.
Connections between the school and home help build positive outcomes for students, so we would like to invite all our new students and their whānau / parents to our New Student and Parent Evening on Tuesday 21st February at 6 pm in the school Hall. This is an opportunity to meet senior staff, your child's Head of House and the Year 9 tutors (if your new student is Year 9), who are the key people that you will be communicating with while you are part of the Rosehill College community. The evening starts in the School hall and students do not need to attend in school uniform.
We look forward to seeing you all at this evening.
Recap: Powhiri
On Tuesday we welcomed all our new students, staff members and whānau with a pōwhiri to our kura. This is the first year our pōwhiri was led by our student leaders and our school kaihautū. We see this becoming the standard for future occasions. One of the special moments in the pōwhiri was when one of our international students Yuta Tochigi spoke for manuhiri. His mihi started in Te Reo Māori, followed by Japanese, English and finally finishing in Te Reo Māori! Thank you to our student advisors, peer support leaders, kaiako and our Te Whare Kimiora team who helped lead the orientation day for our new ākonga.

Recap: Whole School Assembly
This morning we held our Whole School Assembly on the field. This is the one opportunity each year to gather the whole school together. The Student Leaders for 2023 were introduced to the school and presented with their badges. The Head Students each addressed the assembly and impressed all with the quality of the content and presentation of their speeches. They spoke of the wonderful opportunities available at school, extending their comfort zones and making good memories. It is when all ākonga and staff are assembled on the field that we realise how many people are in our school.
This week and continuing next week, we are holding individual year level assemblies in which we are encouraging students to have high expectations of their learning and achievement, demonstrating manaakitanga at all times and striving for Personal Excellence.
