The Weekly Update #4
October 10th, 2024

Those other teams, they're not like us 😎
Save the Date - Virtual High School Night (11/21)
Deal will be hosting a virtual High School Night (HSN) Thursday, November 21, from 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm. This is a great opportunity to hear from DCPS application high schools. Additionally, a DCPS Enrollment team representative will speak to families about the high school application process and how to navigate through myschooldc.org. More details will be shared in team newsletters as we get closer to this event.
Immunizations due December 1st
All student immunization records are due to be updated by December 1st. If you received a letter stating your student's immunizations are not in compliance, please make sure the nurse receives their updated immunization records no later than December 1st. Please contact the school nurse with any questions or concerns.
DNA of a Perfect Brunch
Team Kendrick is excited to announce its celebration for term 1! Students have worked so well this term, and we are looking forward to rewarding them for all their hard work. We will be having a team breakfast on October 31st during period 1 (8:45-9:45). In order to make this celebration a success we need your help. We would appreciate any items that you could donate for our group of 115 students! To streamline this, we have created a sign-up genius linked here. Thank you so much for your consideration!!

Ms. Walters: History
Last week students were able to finish up their annotations and discussion about the electoral college in America. We had great discussions on the use of the process and students were able to decide if they thought the electoral college system should be used today or if we should switch to the popular vote. Students were taught how to critically analyze sources of information by using a strategy called lateral reading. Students will use this strategy during the election project that was introduced on Wednesday. The schedule for next week is below!
- Monday: No School
- Tuesday: Choose Candidates & Begin Research
- Wednesday: Continue Reasearch on Issue #1
- Thursday: Research Issue # 2 & Begin Slides
- Friday: Finalize Slides & Submit!
Ms. Cunha: English
Last week ELA students prepared for their upcoming summative assessment by peer-editing their formative assessments on dialogue and working in stations to practice writing engaging dialogue that advances plot and reveals character traits.
This week in ELA, students will take an RCT which will ask them to analyze a scene from A Raisin in the Sun for how the dialogue reveals a change in each character. They will also take their second summative of the term. This summative will be graded on IB Criterions C Producing Text, and D Using Language. They will be assessed on their ability to correctly use dialogue rules to write and punctuate dialogue as well as how well their dialogue embeds sensory language to reveal character traits and move the plot forward towards a resolution.
Reminder: Students should have read through Act 2 Scene 1 (p. 95) in A Raisin in the Sun so far.
Ms. Anderson: Math
This past week Algebra 1 students learned about graphing two variable inequalities on the coordinate plane. Students will complete practice activities related to these topics before having a pop quiz this week. Students should make sure their notes are up to date. Students should also expect to have their end of unit assessment by the end of this coming week. Algebra 1 students should working towards completing their Delta Math assignment by Monday at 11:59PM.
Remind
It is very important that you and/or your student subscribe to my Remind Alerts. I will be sending out a message sometime on Monday reminding kids to bring pencil, paper and a notebook to class. Remind is how I communicate information to students about their homework. Notices go directly to their phone and are mainly received through a text message (or the app if you download it from the Google Play Store or the App Store). At times I will also attach the assignment in Remind as well. The other useful quality of Remind is that students can ask questions through the app about their homework. These questions go straight to me, so there is no need to feel embarrassed about asking a "dumb question". Most of the time students just need a quick point in the right direction to finish their homework.
If you are not currently receiving Remind notices from me (I've sent several), please make sure you join the correct class by clicking on the link below. You can sign up to receive messages through email, or as text messages through your phone.
