A Note to our Parents
Dear D91 Parents,
Thank you for helping to make the opening of this school year one of the smoothest ever! It is wonderful to see the students and teachers settled into happy routines filled with learning and growth. Our grade-level teams have had a chance to assess each student, review the results, and plan academic support services where necessary. The district continues to utilize IXL in reading and math to help push students forward and/or address any skill gaps. Just as important, social-emotional learning is also an integral part of our daily practice. Establishing a sense of community among our learners is imperative as we build a culture of success and support.
Looking ahead, the district will offer parent-teacher conferences on Monday, November 25 & Tuesday, November 26. Please stay tuned for more information!
Thank you,
Mr. John Jennings, Principal, Kelvin Grove

Notes from the Health Offices
Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year!
As we embark on a new school year, we are also welcoming a new nurse at Kelvin Grove. Ms. Nicole Hasamear holds bachelor degrees in both nursing and chemistry. Before joining us at D91, she worked as a labor and delivery nurse for just under two and a half years. School nursing became her dream career when she made the decision to become a nurse. Ms. Hasamear has been a lifelong resident of Illinois, but is new to the Chicagoland area having spent most of her time living near St. Louis, MO. She also lived in Champaign and Peoria while in school. We hope she will enjoy her time here at District 91!
Here at District 91, we strive to provide a safe and healthy environment for your child. We ask for your help in this matter by:
(a) keeping your child home if sick and remaining home until symptoms have improved and/or remaining home for an illness that requires 24 hours of antibiotics prior to returning to school;
(b) if you are calling your child(ren) into the absence line, please be as specific as possible when describing their symptoms (all information is kept confidential);
(c) that you notify our health offices when your child has been diagnosed with a communicable disease by a healthcare provider so that notes may be sent home/posted to ParentSquare as needed.
“If a student is absent for FOUR or more consecutive days of school, a doctor’s note is required upon returning to school,” per the school handbook.
Your child should remain home if they have the following symptoms of an illness:
Fever (100.0F or higher) - remain home until fever free for 24 hours without the use of over the counter fever-reducing medications
Diarrhea - remain home until 24 hours after the last episode of diarrhea without the use of over the counter medications
Vomiting - remain home for 24 hours after the last episode of vomiting without the use of over the counter medications
Skin rashes - will need a doctor's note stating that the student does not have a contagious illness
Redness, Itchiness, Yellow/Green Drainage or Crustiness from or around the eye - remain home until eye returns to normal or you have a note from the doctor clearing student to return to school
Cough that is persistent/disruptive - remain home until cough improves (may send in cough drops / cough medicine with completed medication form)
Shortness of Breath/Wheezing (not controlled with an inhaler) - remain home until breathing resumes to normal or controllable with inhaler use (medication form signed by doctor needs to be on file)
Head Lice - remain home until treated and nit free; student must be cleared by nurse before returning to classroom - please call nurse to make arrangements
Hospital or ER/Immediate Care Visit - remain home until clearance received from the doctor; please send a copy of the note to school nurse either via email/ParentSquare or with student upon return
Occasionally your child may become ill at school. It is important that the school have your correct home telephone number and work number, as well as an emergency number of a relative, friend, or neighbor that may be contacted in the event a parent cannot be reached. It is encouraged to have more than 1 emergency contact, should that person not be available. Please contact Mrs. Dragosh in the registrar’s office with any updates at 815-838-0737 x1104.
We will keep you informed if your child makes frequent visits to the health office. Sometimes children complain of illness but that may not be the root cause. We welcome calls to inform us of any home or medical issue your child may be experiencing. Part of reaching our goal to keep your child in class to optimize his/her learning involves consistency of health practices at school and at home.

We are looking forward to a wonderful school year!
At school teachers and staff encourage the development of many social emotional skills. One of those is kindness. Kindness is a mixture of respect and caring. Some kids are intrinsically more kind hearted than others. It’s just in them. But most young kids are focused on themselves. They are egocentric and don’t have the brain maturity to always be thinking of others and how their actions affect their classmates. However, there is good news! Kindness is a learned behavior. We can intentionally teach students how to be kind.
Learning happens best when it is done both at school and at home. We encourage you to help your child continue to learn about kindness by talking about it, reading about it, and practicing it! Nothing is learned without repetition and practice.
Talking about Kindness
When you see a moment where your children’s behavior could have been kinder, mention it without punishment. Tell them, “Next time try this….” and give them a suggestion for being more polite or more thoughtful of others.
Let our child know that you value kindness as much as reading and math. Kindness is an essential part of our lives.
Ask your children to tell you about a time someone was kind to them. How did it make them feel?
Ask your child, “Who is someone in your grade that you can be kind to?”
Reading about Kindness
Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes
The Invisible Boy by Trudy Ludwig
Wonder by R.J. Palacio
One for the Murphys by Lynda Mullaly Hunt
Restart by Gordon Korman
Practicing Kindness
Model kindness for your children. Is someone being rude? Respond with kindness. Walk the walk. Talk the talk. Your children are watching. Give them something good to watch.
Smile at others.
Hold a door open.
Offer help to someone such as a friend or neighbor.
Write a note of thanks to a grandparent or someone in your community and have your child go with you to deliver it.
Chalk the sidewalk with kind words.
Your child can read a book to someone younger.
Go on a walk and pick up trash as you go.
If you would like additional support or resources surrounding age appropriate social and emotional skills, please contact any of us! We can be reached by email, parent square or phone.
