Important Update Regarding PowerSchool Data Breach
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are writing to inform you about a recent data breach reported by PowerSchool that involved unauthorized access to student and teacher information within its Student Information System (SIS). According to PowerSchool, the issue has been resolved, and measures have been implemented to prevent further unauthorized access or misuse of the data.
PowerSchool has assured us that the affected data has been deleted and was not replicated or shared publicly.
However, upon reviewing the log data on our server, we have determined that some information was accessed, and our district has been impacted by this cyberattack. Currently, we are working to assess the extent of the damage.
It is important to note that neither Wrangell Public Schools nor any staff or student was at fault in this breach. The server that was compromised was hosted on PowerSchool’s premises.
Wrangell Public Schools is actively collaborating with PowerSchool, and a full report on the situation is expected to be released by PowerSchool on January 17, 2025.
Thank you for your understanding and continued trust as we remain committed to safeguarding the information and privacy of our school community.
Sincerely,
Tony Anzalone
Technology Director

Check for Lice
With school in full swing and our students actively participating in sports, clubs, and other group activities, it’s a good time to remind everyone about the importance of regular lice checks. Close contact and shared spaces make this a peak season for the spread of lice, so a quick, weekly check at home can help ensure everyone stays comfortable and healthy.
If a teacher has a reason to suspect the presence of head lice from either personal observation or a note from a parent, the first step is to contact the principal. At that point, the staff will check the class or the students involved, as well as siblings in other classes.
If lice or nits are found, the student will be sent to the office. Office staff will call a parent to pick the child up immediately for at-home treatment. The student may return to school when no evidence of nits or lice is apparent in a follow-up check by school personnel.
Thank you for your help in keeping our school community healthy and thriving!

Special Note from WHS/SMS Principal Greg Clark
For semester one, all students received a waiver on the 10-day attendance rules for Athletics and Academics. Both rules are similar in that all missing school days except medical and school-sponsored activities accrue for the 10-day rule. These rules are still in our policy and will be effective for semester two, with minor changes. The SAC and I will review our Student Handbook and School Policies in the Spring. If you have any concerns, complaints, or comments, please address them with me. WHS-SMS Principal, Greg Clark
