Kokanee Elementary Bell Schedule
*Please Note
Student Arrival
- We begin unloading buses and cars for arrival at 9:10am daily.
- Breakfast is available for those who need to purchase one between 9:10-9:30am.
- Students arriving by car will use the Pick-Up/Drop-Off Zone (no drop-offs in the bus circle). Students will be greeted by adults and will walk directly to their line-up location.
- Students arriving by bus will be greeted by adults in the Bus Circle and will walk directly to their line-up location.
- Students who walk should say their goodbyes before they get to the blacktop and walk directly to their line-up location.
- If your student arrives after the bell, they must sign in with the front office. This ensures that they are not marked absent for the day.
Student Dismissal
- Students riding the bus home will line up in their bus lines. Lines will be escorted to their bus by the bus supervisors.
- Students picked up by car stay with their teacher on the lower blacktop area and wait for their name to be called. Drivers present their BRIGHT GREEN windshield placard with their student's name(s) listed. The traffic supervisors will call the student up.
- If students are being greeted by an adult to walk home up the hill, parents/guardians should meet their students on the walkway in front of the school.
- If students are meeting parents/guardians at the back gate, parents/guardians should meet their students at the top of the steps that lead to the sand field.
What to do if My Child Will be Late or Absent
Please call or email the designated Attendance Line at (425) 408 - 4910 or email koattendance@nsd.org
ABSENCES:
When you call or email, be sure to include the following information:
- Student's First and Last name
- Teacher Name
- Date(s) your child will be gone
- Reason for absence
TARDY ARRIVAL:
Students who arrive in their classrooms after the 9:30 AM bell rings for any reason will be considered tardy. Students MUST check in with the office for a tardy slip before going to the classroom. This is part of our attendance procedure and ensures they will not be marked absent for the day. Students arriving after the 9:30 AM time on district buses will not be marked tardy and will be able to walk directly to their classrooms.
UNEXCUSED ABSENCES:
If we do not hear from you, our office will contact you at home or at work as part of our Safe Arrival Program. If communication is not received from the parent/guardian explaining the absence within 72 hours, it will be considered an unexcused absence.
Becca Bill: Northshore School District implements provisions of the revised Compulsory Attendance Law, RCW 28.A225, known as the "Becca Bill". The intent of this legislation is to direct schools to initiate a series of corrective steps when a student is absent and unexcused from attending school. School attendance, by law, has been and continues to be compulsory.
EXTENDED VACATIONS:
These absences are highly discouraged. It is the responsibility of the student to find out what work was missed and complete it upon returning to school. Teachers may suggest activities/work for students during the period of absence but are not required to do so. Families who take extended vacations must fill out a Notification of Extended Absence.
Students who are absent for more than 20 consecutive school days due to an extended vacation, will not be reported as truant. However, those students will be withdrawn from their classroom. Students will be readmitted upon returning but are not guaranteed the same class placement.
Bus Information
Find your bus assignment, stop locations, and stop times using your student's ID# at
https://www.nsd.org/our-district/departments/transportation/bus-stop-information
A bus pass is required and should be requested from the Kokanee front office if you want to ride a bus that is not your assigned bus (for example, riding a bus home with your friend). Please be advised that BUS PASSES ARE NOT APPROVED UNTIL MID-OCTOBER AT THE EARLIEST. Transportation needs time to properly assess available seats.
Bus Tracking - There's an APP for that!
DOWNLOAD MY STOP APP BUS TRACKING SOFTWARE
The NSD Transportation Department has implemented the My Stop APP - bus tracking software.
With this free application, parents and guardians can track bus route information and receive notifications from Transportation using the My Stop application. More details on the My Stop application and use are posted on the District website and can be found at https://www.nsd.org/our-district/departments/transportation/mystop
If you have questions or difficulty downloading the My Stop application, please contact Transportation at (425) 408-7981 or email mystop@nsd.org
Paying for Breakfast and Lunch
You can pay by cash or check at your school. Checks should be made out to Northshore School District and indicate "school meals" in the memo line. You can also manage your student's meal account safely and securely online with LINQConnect.
Parents whose income falls within specified guidelines set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture should apply for free or reduced price meals for their students. We encourage you to find out if you qualify with the NSD online application. It only takes a few minutes and is the fastest, easiest way to get approved! Don't forget... families must re-apply every year.
Where Can I Find the Lunch Menu?
CHECK BACK OFTEN as the menus may change without notice due to supply chain issues. Interactive menus will be updated as quickly as possible.
New from the Technology Department
As we prepare for the upcoming school year, it is time to confirm your student's District-assigned Chromebook is ready for the school year!
To help them have a smooth start, please take some time this week to ensure all parts of your child's Chromebook kit— including the Chromebook, charging cord, and protective case—are accounted for, in good working order, and the carry bag labeled with student name/teacher/school. Additionally, please make sure your child's Chromebook is fully charged and ready for use on the first day of school. *Please restart/shut down the device several times to allow for system updates to install. It is the student’s responsibility to bring their device charged and ready to use every day, or as otherwise directed by their classroom teacher.
If you are aware of any issues or damage, please submit a student support ticket at https://go.nsd.org/studenttechhelp and remind your student to let their teacher know of device issues on the first day. Their teacher will direct them to bring their full device set to the STS office.
Device Protection (DPP) is available to purchase for the new school year. Please note 2023-2024 DPP purchased last school year covers damage reported up to Sept. 6th, so it is important to timely report any damage from the summer. DPP for 2024-25 is now available to purchase at: go.nsd.org/dpp.
From the Library
Hello Kokanee Families,
We are so excited to welcome our Kodiaks back to the library this year! Volunteers have an important role in making the most of our students' library time each week! Volunteers help with student book check out, shelving books, preparing materials, and organizing tables and material between classes. If you would like to volunteer in the library this year, please see below for important volunteer information.
Library Volunteers must:
- Have up to date NSD background check and library volunteer agreement on file.
- Be available for a weekly or bi-weekly time slot and sign up on the Sign-Up Genius
Thank you!

I am here to support our entire Kokanee Community. I work alongside teachers, parents and guardians to help all of our Kodiaks develop socially, emotionally, and academically.

Highlight from the NSD Rights and Responsibilities Handbook
STUDENT USE OF CELL PHONES AND ELECTRONIC DEVICES
Students using cell phones and other electronic devices irresponsibly during the school day may have the electronic device confiscated and be subject to disciplinary action. If the student is involved in an administration interview or investigation, to maintain integrity throughout the process, a student may be asked to provide their cell phone to an office staff member or the investigating administrator. It will be returned to the student or parent at the conclusion of the interview/investigation. Reasonable efforts will be taken to secure property that has been confiscated (i.e. lock the item in a drawer, take the item to the office to be secured in a locked area, etc.); in order to prevent the loss, damage, or theft of any electronic device as a result of being confiscated.
At Kokanee, electronic devices are not permitted in the classroom except when approved by the classroom teacher. We do recognize that families may have a need for their child to have a cell phone/smart watch. If a student brings a cell phone to school, it should be turned off/silent and kept in their backpack during the school day. If a student needs to make a call during the day, they should talk to their teacher about the best way to do this. If a parent needs to contact a student, they should do so through the office, not the student’s cell phone or smart watch during the school day. If the watch is just used as a watch, it may be used, but there should not be texting, or calls made or received during the school day.
Students using cameras on these devices in an inappropriate way will have their electronic device confiscated and be subject to disciplinary action. This includes photographing or recording someone without their permission.
Kokanee Canine Companions
Kokanee is privileged to have a facility and therapy dog program! We currently have 9 highly trained dogs supporting our school this year!
These dogs are trained with specific skills to support the academic, physical, and social-emotional needs of our learning community. All dogs have been tested and certified to be safe with our students. Additionally, we have the privilege of partnering with Canine Companions, one of the oldest service dog organizations in the country, to have service dogs in training visit our campus.
Being at our school helps prepare these dogs for life as working service dogs, and the children have the opportunity to follow the dogs' progress after they transition to advanced training in the specific skills needed to serve their forever person. The service dogs in training are vetted and determined to be safe on campus by local service dog trainers.
If you would like to learn more about our dogs or the program, please ask Janet Prendergast, OT/PT, jprendergast@nsd.org
Welcome Back to Physical Education - PE
Hello Kodiaks!
Welcome back to Kokanee! We are very excited for the year, and wanted to give some reminders so we are able to maximize our time together in the gym.
On days that you have PE, please wear comfortable clothes that allow you to move freely. Wear sneakers and make sure your laces are tied. If you’re not good at tying your laces yet, practice. Like all things in life, when you practice you get better. There are many days when you will wear boots to school because of the weather. If you wear boots on a day you have PE please remember to bring sneakers that you can change into. We will not have students sit out if they are wearing rain boots, but improper footwear can limit the ability to fully participate in PE activities.
We will have many different PE units and activities throughout the year. Most units are 2-3 weeks long. We ask that students participate and try new things. Our goal is that all students enjoy learning and participating in the gym and that we can instill lifelong habits of participating in physical activities. If students are injured, please coordinate with the office, to provide medical documentation as to the injury and time period, when students need to limit or refrain from PE activities.
Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns.

News from the Nurse
Dear Parents/Guardians:
Hello, and welcome back to school from Nurse Lily!! Being back in school means we are exposed to a TON of new things! New friends, new teachers, and, not-so-fun, new GERMS. It is not uncommon for your child to get sick during the first few weeks of school, especially new Kindergarteners! To prevent widespread illnesses in the school, we recommend that your child stay home from school if he/she experiences flu or cold symptoms.
To decide whether or not to send your child to school, please consider the following guidelines:
Consider keeping your child at home for an extra day of rest if he/she has any of the following:
● Very stuffy or runny nose and/or cough
● Mild sore throat (no fever, no known exposure to strep)
● Headache
● Mild stomachache
DEFINITELY keep your child at home for treatment and observation with these symptoms:
● Fever (greater than 100 degrees by mouth) (Must be fever free for 24/h to return to school)
● Vomiting (even once) (Must be emesis free for 24/h to return to school)
● Diarrhea (Must be free of loose stools for 24/h to return to school)
● Chills
● General malaise or feelings of fatigue, discomfort, weakness or muscle aches
● Congested (wet) or croupy cough, or continuous cough with inability to wear a mask
● Lots of nasal congestion with frequent blowing of nose
To help prevent the flu and other colds, teach your children good hygiene habits:
● Wash hands frequently
● Do not touch eyes, nose or mouth
● Cover mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing, Coughing or sneezing into their bent elbow, not their hands.
● Avoid close contact with people who are sick
Colds are the most contagious during the first 48 hours. A child who has a fever should remain at home until “fever free” for a minimum of 24 hours. Often when a child awakes with vague complaints (the way colds and flu begin) it is wise to observe your child at home for an hour or two before deciding to send him/her to school. Your child should be physically able to participate in all school activities on return to school. We cannot have students sit out from recess or PE because they aren't feeling well. Keeping a sick child at home will minimize the spread of infections and viruses in the classroom.
Thank you so much in advance for helping make this year at school as healthy as possible!!

Do You Have a Kindergartener?
By now you have had a chance to hear from your teacher(s) and learn that Kindergarten kicks off the school year different than the other grade levels.
This is part of the Washington Kindergarten Inventory of Developing Skills (WaKIDS) program, a legislatively mandated part of state-funded, full-day kindergarten. Family Connection takes place at the beginning of the school year, allowing Teacher, Student and Parent/Guardian conferencing the first 3 calendar days.
Please visit the OSPI webpage for more information.
Become a Kokanee Volunteer!
Want to volunteer on campus? You can start preparing now!
All volunteers in Northshore are required to complete an online volunteer application to volunteer during the school year. It is also important to note that all volunteers who have completed a background check in the past will be expected to renew their volunteer application annually.
If you completed a Level 2 background check in the past, you will only need to renew your Level 1 check before it expires and complete this form to maintain your Level 2 status. If your Level 1 status expires before you renew and there is a period/gap of having an inactive volunteer status, you will need to complete a new Level 2 check.
It is recommended that volunteers needing Level 1 background checks submit their applications at least a week before volunteering, and volunteers needing Level 2 background checks submit their applications at least 3 weeks before volunteering.
*Please ONLY use ONE EMAIL to apply to avoid duplicate accounts. Once you complete your application, please remember the email that you used so it is easier for school staff to locate your profile.
- Step One - read through the Northshore School District Volunteer Orientation.
- Step Two -
- Classroom(in-person or virtual) and/or on-campus volunteers during school hours - complete a background check (level 1) through Safe Visitor Solutions. This background check is through the Washington State Patrol System which many of you are familiar with. More information about background checks are provided in the Northshore School District Orientation. *
- Field trip chaperones/after-school chaperones and/or drivers - complete a background check (level 2) through Safe Visitor Solutions. There is a $12.95 cost to the volunteer to process this background check. In some cases, additional fees may be requested to obtain information from certain jurisdictions. If this cost creates a hardship that will prevent you from volunteering your time, please email partnerships@nsd.org. After your first year of volunteering as a Level 2, please complete a Level 1 background check (before your current Level 2 expires) and complete this form to maintain your Level 2 background status. This will allow you to renew without having to pay the $12.95 fee again.
Please call the front office with questions!

Highly Capable Services
Refer a student and Give Permission to Participate (any student who does not have a HiCap designation and any single subject qualified student who would like to be assessed in the second subject can be referred for screening and assessment.) Referrals for testing in 2024-2025 will open August 2024 and will Close October 11th at 4:00pm.
Please note: we have combined these 2 forms (Referral form and Permission to Participate form) into a single form. You may refer your student and give permission to test in the same form.
Welcome families! Here's a quick overview of the information you can find on the NSD HiCap web pages:
- Service Models: Here are descriptions of Northshore's Highly Capable programs.
- Eligibility Process: Highly Capable Eligibility Process for current Northshore students.
- Non-Northshore Students: If your student is not currently enrolled in Northshore school district or if your student enrolled after our mid-October cutoff date, visit our Non-Northshore Student page.
- Opt Out: Not interested in Highly Capable testing this year? By completing this form, we'll know that your family does not wish to participate in this year's Highly Capable Eligibility Process.
Website trouble? If you find any broken links, typos, or other website-related issues, report them here: Website Feedback.
Let's keep in touch. When our department needs to reach a large group of families at once, we use Northshore's mass notification system. To protect student privacy, we only use the contact information Northshore has on file. We don't want you to miss out on any updates, so this is a good time to make sure that Northshore has your correct contact information. You can do this in ParentVUE or by checking with the main office at your student's school.
We remain thankful for your partnership - looking forward to a great school year!
What is the Highly Capable Program?
Highly Capable Services are designed for students identified as advanced learners through cognitive and/or academic performance.
We provide services and offer programs for students whose needs are beyond the scope of the general education classroom. Our services are designed to provide a challenging, integrated, and enriched curriculum.
Students are identified for Highly Capable services in a two-step process: universal screening and assessment.
Our Guiding Principles
- Whole-child focus. Support for academic, creative, and social-emotional development fostering a growth mindset.
- Different work, not more work. Developing innovative, creative, and critical thinkers through access to advanced learning standards with appropriate depth and rigor.
- Not a one-size-fits-all. Highly Capable qualified students have diverse needs and unique challenges, in addition to high cognitive capability and/or academic achievement. Often this requires the collaboration of teams across programs to meet the needs of individual learners.
- Equitable access. Ability and talent are equally distributed, opportunity is not. All students, regardless of race, income, culture, special needs, or support program, have the potential to qualify for advanced learning services when given equitable opportunity with culturally and linguistically accessible instruments and an unbiased qualification system.
