Message from Ms. Helse
This week, we’ve had a bit of extra rain, but that hasn’t dampened the spirits of our Rock View Roadrunners! It might be pouring outside, but inside, our students are shining bright and staying dry.
Ms. Batista and I had the wonderful opportunity to visit classrooms this week and see learning in action. From our fifth graders exploring the fascinating world of reptiles and amphibians, to our third graders beginning to classify animals, all the way down to our kindergarteners singing their way through letter sounds and words, it’s clear that our students are hard at work and doing their B.E.S.T.
Classroom teachers have been wrapping up MAP and DIBELS testing, with students taking their time to truly show their teachers everything they know. We are so proud of the effort and focus they’ve put into these assessments!😊
Rock View teachers recently received professional development around academic discourse, one of our key school improvement goals this year. They are eager to implement the new strategies they've learned to help support all students in engaging in rich classroom discussions.
Our school counselors lead a successful Start With Hello Week! Students and staff came together to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all, reinforcing the importance of kindness and community here at Rock View.
Our Roadrunners truly ROCK!

CKLA Curriculum Information
MCPS has adopted Amplify CKLA as our new PreK-5 English Language Arts Curriculum. Based on the Science of Reading, CKLA incorporates foundational reading skills along with knowledge building lessons. This approach is designed to support our students as they learn to read while simultaneously building the background knowledge necessary to comprehend complex texts at each elementary grade level and beyond.
Here are helpful links to find more information about the new curriculum!
Book-O-Ween
We are excited to announce an upcoming event at school called "Book-O-Ween," taking place on October 31st! On this fun-filled day we invite students to dress up as their favorite literary characters or notable figures from non-fiction texts. Students must have the physical book, article or print out to complete their look. Be sure to pack a change of clothes (if necessary) for students to change after the event. Please avoid full costumes, masks, weapons or violent imagery.
The day will kick off with a parade from 9:30 to 10:00 AM, where students will march around the outside school in their creative outfits. Parents are cordially invited to attend and cheer on our young readers!
After the parade, students will return to their classrooms for a special "Book Talk ‘n Treat" from 10:00 to 10:30 AM. During this time, they will share the books that inspired their creative outfits while enjoying a small morning treat. While parents won’t be able to attend the Book Talk ‘n Treat, teachers will be reaching out soon with requests for treats to make this gathering special.
Additionally, a small alternate activity will be available in the media center, where students can share their favorite stories and enjoy a treat.
We look forward to celebrating our love for literature with your children on Book-O-Ween!🙂
MCPS Operating Status and Color Codes
The safety of our MCPS community is critical, and being able to communicate with students, staff, and families during severe weather or other emergencies is of the utmost importance. The current operating status options for the school district appear on the MCPS website and on individual school websites. In the event of a change in operational status, this link will provide more information about the MCPS Operating Status options.
2024-2025 Student Handbook
In order to ensure a safe, productive, and positive learning environment, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) publishes these handbooks to help students, parents/guardians, and staff understand the Montgomery County Board of Education's core values and commitments; students' rights; school rules; expectations for student conduct; and the possible consequences for violating the rules. If you have questions, please speak to the administration at your school. If you have comments about any of these publications, please send them in writing to the MCPS Department of Communications at pio@mcpsmd.org.
Message from our Counselors
Happy October! As we move into our second month of school our students are settling into routines that set them up for success. We are beginning our character education program with Growth Mindset this month. Growth Mindset is believing that your brain can grow as you make mistakes and learn new things. Check out our newsletter for more information about our school counseling program and how we can support families.
