The OREO Challenge
Mrs. Laufenberg's Class - October 2014
The OREO Challenge is a project coordinated by a teacher in California named Jen Wagner. The idea behind this world wide challenge, now in it's 15th year, is to see how many Oreo cookies students can stack up before the cookies tumble. Classes from all over take the challenge and record their results on the project website. This year, almost 900 classes and over 8,800 students participated. There are a lot of ways this project connects to the curriculum. Mrs. Laufenberg's students predicted, counted, and graphed their results. Those results will be compared to students from across the world! It sure was a fun day.
Mrs. Laufenberg explained what a prediction was and modeled how to write the prediction on the form.
Students discussed and wrote down their predictions.
Predictions from the students ranged from 10 to 115.
Stacking and Counting
After making their predictions, Mrs. Laufenberg showed the students the guidelines for stacking the cookies, making sure everyone was counting along to check the accuracy of the stack.

AFTER STACKING, STUDENTS GRAPHED THEIR RESULTS
comparing results
After students graphed their results, they compared their prediction to the actual number of cookies they stacked. There was one student who's prediction actually matched the real count!
one more challenge

There was one more challenge and this one involved the teachers. Mrs. Laufenberg, Mrs. Reichhart, and Mr. Lehman participated to see how many they could stack. The students were all cheering! One quick note - the highest stacker was a student, not a teacher! A special thank you goes out to our kindergarten videographer for capturing the challenge.
the celebration
Thinking about and stacking Oreo cookies sure made the students hungry. New packages of cookies were opened and the students finally got to celebrate their hard work!
