MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Greetings MVCSD Community,
This week, I delivered the second State of the District Address to staff to share updates on the building reorganization process. I commend our staff for their cooperation and commitment to our students as we have undergone this challenging transition. In my address, I also shared a timeline for the budget. The proposed budget will be presented at the Board meeting on April 22, and the Board will vote on adopting the budget that day as well.
We are celebrating Assistant Principal Week, and I am proud of the wonderful group of assistant principals that we have at our schools. They show up every day to perform vital tasks that help to make their schools a positive place to learn for children. We have so many amazing faculty and staff within our District, and our assistant principals are another piece of the puzzle that have helped us take our students Back to Basics, Forward to Mastery.
Mount Vernon STEAM Academy has so many fantastic classes for students interested in STEM. The Computer Science Essentials and Robotics courses are two examples of why STEAM was ranked as a top 6% public school in New York State by Public School Review. Katherine Hallissy’s Computer Science Essentials class provides students with project-based learning through Project Lead the Way, most recently programming robots to move in different directions. Peter Poliey’s Robotics class also got hands-on experience with robots this week, learning how to program them.
English as a New Language parents at Graham School gained valuable information about the upcoming testing this week, meeting with ENL teachers and the school’s parent liaison, Veronica Graham. This was a great opportunity for parents to build their connection to the school community, as we want all of our families to feel welcome and supported.
Kamora Alston is being highlighted this week in our Senior Spotlight Series, and she has truly earned this recognition. With a 96 GPA, she also spends time supporting her fellow classmates as the student manager for the girls’ varsity basketball team. She also excels in rigorous programs such as International Baccalaureate and is involved in the Ready4Life afterschool program as an ambassador, where she helps other students. Great work Kamora and good luck at Stony Brook University!
Enjoy spring recess! Schools are closed next week and will reopen on Tuesday, April 22.
Kindest Regards,
Dr. K. Veronica Smith
Acting Superintendent of Schools
