Scholars Bowl
Scholars Bowl is Firing Up!!!-Shannon Conti
11/5 Our JV scholars bowl opened our season at Linn. We participated in an 11 round, round Robin tournament with 1 bye round. There were 11 rounds total. We Went 6 and 4 for our 10 rounds of play. By our best guess we finished in 4th place behind Linn, Republic County and St John's. Great start to, what will hopefully be, an amazing season. I think we are building a strong team.
Keeping Up with the MUSTANGS
Please take a minute to watch!!!
Please Note:
Due to Football, the Friday Night Performance is Moved

Mrs Stevenson received a surprise this week!!!
Lana received a grant from Kansas Association of American Educators for $500.00. It is for her to purchase a new class set of novels for her 8th graders. The book she is planning to buy is called The Worst Hard Time by Timothy Egan. It is a collection of true stories about survivors of the Dust Bowl during the Great Depression. She chose this book because of the connection it has to the social studies curriculum. Our students have a class on Kansas History in 7th grade, so I thought this would be a good non-fiction book to complement their previous learning.

Mustang Update
By now just about everyone knows that our Lady Mustangs played their way to the Class 2A State Volleyball Runner-Up title this past weekend! We want to congratulate this group of hard-working young ladies for their sportsmanship and determination throughout the season! Their team awards also included TVL Tournament Runner-Up, 2A Regional Champions and 2A Sub-State Champions. Congratulations to our coaches – Susan Steinfort, Liz Miller and Amy Spoonts. Ava Smith and Mia Vermetten were named to the KVCA 2A All-State Tournament team earlier this week. Ava and Mia also earned First Team TVL All-League Volleyball honors this week and Anne Toerber was named to the Second Team. Congratulations! We will be recognizing the team during a halftime presentation at the Valley Heights – Sterling Regional game tonight!
Our high school cross country team endured some tough conditions this past Saturday at the 2A State Cross Country meet hosted at the Wamego Golf Course. Pouring rain, wind and cold temperatures turned the course into a muddy mess but our runners gave it their best shot during their races. Junior Kebeb Zimmerman paced the Mustangs with a 39th place finish and was followed in by freshman, Tyler Holmes in 57th place. It should be noted that there were 112 competitors in this race. In the girl’s division. Sophomore Lindsey Gray finished 82nd out of 103 runners. Congratulations to these students and their coach, Adrian Pishney.
KAYS sponsored our annual Veteran’s Day celebration on Friday, November 8th, and they did a fantastic job with the program. Our speaker was Valley Heights alumni and current staff member, Mr. Tommy Tryon. Mr. Tryon talked about his service and he received a well-earned standing ovation for his words! We were also treated to a song from our choir and they did a spectacular job with their performance. During our service day our students were able to interview some of our elementary students with questions such as “What do you like about America?” and “What is a Veteran?”. Those clips were made into a video and shared with our guests. All in all, it was a great program to honor our veterans! We would like to say thank you to all of our veterans for your service!
Mrs. Lana Stevenson, who is one of our ELA instructors found out last week that she was awarded a $500 grant through the KANAAE (Kansas Association of American Educators) to help her purchase a set of classroom textbooks! Congratulations!
Our fall play will be presented this weekend with some changes to the dates and times when the curtain will go up! Because of the football playoff game this Friday night we will now have two presentations on Saturday, the 9th! The first show will be at 2:00 pm and the second one at the traditional time of 7:00 pm. The final performance will then be Sunday, November 10th at 2:00 pm. The students and Ms. Jones and Ms. Tryon have put in a lot of time and we would love to have a full house for every performance! Break a Leg!
Don’t forget – we have a football playoff game here at Valley Heights – TONIGHT (November 9th)! The Mustangs will be squaring off against the Sterling Black Bears at 7:00 pm. This is a KSHSAA event so no passes will be accepted. Admission costs will be $8.00 for adults and $6.00 for students, grades K-12! Let’s go Mustangs!!
Have a great week!
