Principal's Desk
Dear CMIT South Elementary Families,
I hope this message finds you and your children thriving as we continue our journey through this academic year. As Michelle Obama wisely expressed, "You may not always have a comfortable life and you will not always be able to solve all of the world's problems at once but don't ever underestimate the importance you can have because history has shown us that courage can be contagious and hope can take on a life of its own." It is with this spirit of understanding and collaboration that I share several important updates with our school community.
First, I want to celebrate our upcoming milestone - February 12th marks our 100th day of school! We invite all staff and students to join in the festivities by dressing up as 100-year-old people. These moments of joy and creativity help make our learning environment engaging and memorable for everyone.
I'm delighted to recognize Mrs. Cecilia, Ms. Reese, and Mrs. Valera, who have been awarded the CLF STAR AWARD for their exceptional dedication and going above and beyond in their service to our students. Their commitment exemplifies the excellence we strive for at CMIT South.
Regarding schedules, please note this is an A-Week/Week 1, so your child should follow their A-Week/Week 1 schedule for creative arts (CARTS) classes.
I want to share some staffing updates with you:
We are proud to announce Mr. Holloway's promotion to Program Coordinator (STEM). While we will miss his presence in the 4th-grade Math and Science classroom, his new role will allow him to make an even broader impact on our STEM education programs.
We warmly welcome Mrs. Pearson, who will be taking over the 4th-grade Math and Science teaching responsibilities.
Currently, we are actively working with the Department of Human Resources to address our special educator vacancy. Despite the national shortage of special educators, we remain committed to providing services and accommodations specified in your children's Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Our available staff are implementing necessary support services, and we are taking every step to ensure a smooth transition with minimal disruption.
Important Reminders:
Please complete your Emergency Contact and Pick List for each of your scholars. This information is crucial for your child's safety and well-being.
MAKE-UP DAY 1: February 14 – Originally scheduled as a professional day for teachers, this day was identified in the school calendar as a potential make-up day and will now be an instructional day with schools OPEN for students.
We invite you to join us for the Maryland Alliance of Public Charter School's 2025 Advocacy Day on February 19, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at St. Anne's Episcopal Church, Church Circle, Annapolis, MD 21401. This is an excellent opportunity to meet with elected officials and show support for charter schools.
As always, remember that the STEM Journey Begins Here at CMIT South Elementary! Let's continue to fill this school year with exciting learning opportunities, personal growth, and impressive achievements for all our scholars. Your partnership in education makes a profound difference in our students' success and we thank you for making CMIT South Elementary a vibrant and supportive learning community. Together, we're creating meaningful experiences for our scholars! Remember, we can't continue this STEM journey without you!
Let's make this year a roaring success! 🦁📚
Wishing you all a 🐾 PawwRific 🐾 day and see you all Monday, February 10, 2025!

* Must include or mention the school theme: TIGERS ROAR!
* All designs should be vertical (portrait size) and 8x5” x 11”.

* Use markers or bold coloring pencils, outline the design in black sharpie.
* Do not submit scanned designs on line paper, use plain white paper.

* One submission per student.
* Late submissions will not be accepted.
***All submissions should be scanned and sent to pto@cmitsouthes.org***
***A Parental Consent Form must accompany all Yearbook Cover Submissions***
Cover Tips:
Use Rich Colors: The more color depth and contrast in your artwork, the better your cover will reproduce. Subtle colors may lose some detail in the printing process. Certain solid ink colors, such as navy, black and forest green, do not work well when placed next to each other.
Use Full-size Images: Images that have been reduced by photocopying or with photo-editing software will not always reproduce well. For best results, always use full-size artwork.
Use Thick Lines: For best results, be sure that outlines are thick. Thin outlines created with pencil will not reproduce completely.
Avoid Metallic: Glitter and metallic foils do not reproduce well when printed. These materials often appear black with little hint of color. Fluorescent inks will not reproduce well and should be avoided.
Computer-Generated Art: If you are submitting artwork that has been created on a computer, be sure image resolution is at least 250 dpi and that line art has a resolution of at least 500 dpi.
***By entering the Yearbook Cover Contest, the CMIT South Elementary PTO reserves the right to publish your child’s artwork in the yearbook***.
If you have any questions, please contact the PTO at pto@cmitsouthes.org.

Birthday Celebrations
Birthdays are so much fun to celebrate with classmates. However, during the school day, the health and safety of each student are important, especially students with food allergies. Students are ONLY permitted to bring in NON-FOOD items to distribute to classmates at the end of the school day. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping all of our students safe at CMIT South ES.
Additionally, please note that teachers and staff are unable to participate in distributing communications/invitations or email addresses related to birthday celebrations. All planning for birthdays needs to happen outside of school so that it does not take away from the purpose of instruction.

CARTS
Technology:
Hello CMIT family, both near and far! I’m Mr. Morton, and I am the new technology teacher at CMIT South Elementary School. I am truly excited to be here, engaging with your children and guiding their learning journey. I aim to be a strong role model, showing them how to effectively harness technology to create opportunities, inspire motivation, and pave their own futures.
I earned my degree in Mass Communication: Video & Audio Production from Frostburg State University, and I bring a wealth of experience from my extensive background in hospitality and event planning. I strongly advocate for exposure and inclusion, which is why every grade will receive the same “Technology Word of the Day.” Additionally, during Black History Month, we will spotlight a “Black Leader in Technology.” My goal is to expand their vocabulary and understanding from Kindergarten to 5th grade with terms like “Algorithm" and its relevance in today’s world.
Your children will learn vital skills such as Graphic Design, Video Editing, Website Creation, and responsible use of A.I. technology, alongside the essential computer fundamentals that shape our society today.
I eagerly anticipate the memories we will create together as a community of families, students, and staff here at CMIT South Elementary School. Thank you for the warm welcome to this “Pawrrific” community.
Looking forward to seeing everyone in class!
Art:
In 1st grade this week, our budding artists learned how to use geometric shapes and their imagination to create animals out of cardboard. Then they painted their creations. Pictured below are some highlights of Mrs. Valera’s class!
