Letter for 8th Grade Promotion and Dance
May 14, 2024
Dear Parents/Guardians of 8th Grade Students,
Itβs hard to believe that the school year is almost over. With the school year ending comes an exciting time with 8th grade promotion.
The 8th grade promotion ceremony and dance will be held at Pioneer on Tuesday, June 11th, 2024, starting at 4:30pm. The promotion ceremony will be in the gym with the dance following in the cafeteria. The dress code for the promotion ceremony requires 8th graders to dress as if they were going on a job interview. Students may wear a nice pair of pants and a dress shirt with a collar β no jeans, t-shirts, sweatshirts or sagging pants. Sport jackets and ties are nice but not required. Students may wear a nice skirt and blouse, dress or pants outfit β no shorts, short skirts or too revealing dresses, please. This is not a formal occasion, so we ask that students not wear tuxedos or formals.
We know that families are eager to celebrate 8th grade promotion, but we must ask that you keep parent/family attendance to a minimum so that we abide by fire code. We ask that each 8th grader have three or fewer guests attend so that we do not exceed code limits. Also, please do not bring balloons to promotion as it blocks the view of others.
Below is a schedule on Tuesday, June 11th to help promotion run smoothly; please have your student arrive on time.
11:10am 8th grade students dismissed (bus transportation is provided home)
4:00pm Students return to school (no transportation)
4:30pm Promotion ceremony begins: 8th grade dance begins when promotion ends for Pioneer students only - no outside guests
7:30pm Dance concludes, please arrange to have your child picked up promptly
(no transportation is provided.)
Sincerely,
JoAnne Fernandes
Principal
What's Happening in English/Language Arts Classes at Pioneer
6th Grade- As part of our novel study of Boy: Tales of Childhood by Roald Dahl, students have been practicing effective narrative writing. Inspired by one of the chapters in the book, and to showcase their newly acquired writing skills, students were challenged to write a narrative showcasing their favorite candy. For a little extra incentive, this writing assignment was also a contest! Three winners were chosen from each class and the prize was the candy they wrote about! Here are Mrs. Brown's winners of the 2024 Candy Contest:
Nyahala Kavinguha
Wyatt Morfin
Awynn Scott
Nora Pope
Jimmie Wilson
Jin Lee Parlett
Adrian Reyes
Maddison Haney
Charlotte Sprague
7th Grade- Students in seventh grade have completed argumentative essays as a culminating project to go along with The Outsiders. After SBA testing, students will embark on a public speaking adventure; students will analyze what makes an effective speaker and get a chance to hone their own skills with a presentation in June. We are looking forward to a fun-filled final month of school!
8th Grade- Students in Mrs. Marrero's ELA classes read the short story "Flowers for Algernon" written by Daniel Keyes. The story is told through a series of progress reports written by the main character Charlie Gordon. Charlie is the subject of a surgical experiment designed to increase his low intelligence. Students analyzed static, dynamic, flat, and round characters. In addition they explored ethical and moral themes related to scientific practices and mental disabilities. The culminating project was to create a "Rorschach Test" painting for other students to analyze by writing a descriptive paragraph.
