East Central

It's been a great first quarter. Honor Roll numbers are in for the 1st 9-weeks. 62% of our students earned all As and Bs with nearly 33% of those earning all As. Teachers and students are clearly working hard. We have great facilities; we have great sports teams; we have quality clubs and activates, but ACADEMICS will always remain a priority with more CTE and dual credit opportunities available on campus than any other school in SE Indiana.

Congratulations and good luck to Nattalie Florence, Alexandra Seubert, and Mary Blankman all Lilly Finalists this year.

In athletics, it's been an amazing fall sports season. Both soccer teams won EIAC and sectional titles; girls cross county won EIAC and sectional titles as well sending Jena Weiler and Callie Bentley to the State Championships. In boys cross, Bradyn Hatton became the first EC boy ever to qualify for the State Championships. In Tennis, Noah Mersmann and Ian Maxwell won EIAC and advanced to regionals undefeated until their final match just missing State qualification. In girls golf, Rowan Pies was only the second ever golf State championships competitor in EC history. Football continues their historic season, still undefeated and ranked first in class 4A. They will play in the regional round of the State playoffs in Evansville this coming Friday in pursuit of what we hope will be back-to-back State Championships.

Finally, we continue to celebrate East Central High School turning 50 in August and all class of 1974 graduates!

Thank you to Senior, Lucy Chenault for the commemorative 50th design!

East Central High School is excited to announce Nathan Graf as Student of the Month. Nathan is a member of the National Honor Society with a grade point average of 4.056. He is also the recipient of the prestigious ECHS Academic Jacket. His school participation includes being a Student Ambassador and a member of The Trojan Exchange which is the school store for spirit wear as well as playing on the tennis team. Nathan visibly represents East Central as the Trojan Mascot where he recently made a visit to all of the Sunman Dearborn Elementary schools in hopes to increase “Trojan Nation” school spirit!

He is a member of All Saints Parish and is involved in the youth group along with Trojan Young Life. He mentors other students through tutoring. Nathan also enjoys playing basketball, tennis and hanging out with his friends. Assistant Principal, Mrs. Rosfeld noted that Nathan’s genuineness, smile, and personality set him aside from many. She also added, “he is an upstanding young man with a bright future!”

College is on the horizon for Nathan and he plans to earn a bachelor's degree in exercise science and eventually a doctorate in physical therapy. Nathan would like to thank his grandfather for his role in who he is today. He says “My grandpa played a huge role in my life. He played sports with me and put me on a road to academic success.”

For fellow students his advice is to “prepare for the worst, but hope for the best. Four years flies by. Be sure to make the memories that you will want to remember.”

It is with great pride East Central announces Tyler Bruner as Student of the Month. Tyler is the son of Heather and Greg Bruner. He is a member of the National Honor Society having been on Honor Roll four years, Student Council, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and will be running track this year. Tyler also attends the Southeastern Career Center where he has an impressive 100% A+ in Electrical Trades. He was also accepted into the Capstone Program for the CTE trade. Tyler plans to continue his career goal of entering the workforce as an electrician. He is currently employed with BDC Electric and is job shadowing until graduation.

Tyler was selected from the Career Center as their Pumpkin King Candidate. He enjoys hiking, fishing and being outdoors. He likes to travel and see different places, cultures and aspects of life. He likes sports with his favorite being baseball and football. As a member of Bright Christian Church he enjoys meeting new people and forming relationships. He is also a student leader with the Young Life organization.

Tyler thanks his parents for teaching him to always stay true to himself and be the best person he can be. He says, “They taught me to treat everyone with respect which has truly shaped me into the person I am today.” He would also like to thank his teachers for pushing him to be the best student he could be.

Tyler stated, “If I could give advice to other students I would tell them to enjoy high school to the fullest because it goes by quicker than you think! I would also tell them to work hard while in school because the work they put in now will impact their future.”

Advanced Placement Exam Registration

The IVYT 111 Student Success course is one credit hour course required to start an Associate Degree. It is being offered in a 4-day virtual format during spring break, March 25-28. This is normally an 8 week online course, so this is a great opportunity to knock it out with an instructor in a matter of days. This section is only for local high school students in grades 9-12 and there's no cost to you! Please contact Mrs. Karle if you have questions or would like to sign up!

Scheduling process for the 2024-2025 school year will begin November 29th.

• November 29th: High School Scheduling Fair and Parent meeting from 6pm-7pm in the Performing Arts Center.

• Class meetings with current 8th-11th graders will be held November 30th to review the registration process for next year’s classes.

• During the month of January guidance counselors will begin meeting with students individually to discuss registration, diploma types, ICC and pathway requirements.

• May: Target date to release 2024-2025 schedules to students. Last day to change schedules for 2024-2025 will be May 23rd.

Seniors: College applications should be completed. Nov. 1st was the deadline for Purdue University and for scholarship consideration at IU through the application. December 1st is the next hard deadline for University of Cincinnati applications. If students need any assistance do not hesitate to follow up with their guidance counselor.

Remember, the FAFSA has an April 15th deadline for Indiana. Students should follow up with counselors with admission issues or concerns and they will assist with contacting colleges with questions particular to the students’ needs. Seniors who are undecided about what to study after high school are encouraged to connect with Ivy Tech Community College’s Associate Accelerated Program (ASAP). This program helps high school graduates earn an Associate’s Degree in just 11 months and prepares them to transfer to a four-year college to earn their Bachelor's Degree.

Juniors: SAT School Day: The SAT School Day test for all juniors in the state of Indiana will be given during the school day on March 5th, 2024. This test is free and used by the state for school accountability. The benefit of the test is that students will be able to use this score report for college applications. More information will be provided as the March date approaches.

Sophomores and Freshman: Scheduling will be completed by the end of January for the following year with changes accepted until the end of the year. Students should be focusing on grades and career/college exploration. Once sophomore PSAT scores are received, results will be reviewed in the classroom along with additional supports for SAT/ACT test prep.

Southeastern Career Center: Sophomores are invited to attend a field trip to the Career Center on December 6th. Permission slips will be distributed in English class along with video review of programs offered. Videos can be viewed at https://www.sccusa.org/. The application is due no later than March 1st. However, if students want to ensure their first choice of programming, they need to turn in their application by December 15.

Ivy Tech College Connection Coach

For students working on achieving the Indiana College Core and their Associates Degrees and needing to pick up courses, Ivy Tech has multiple eight-week sessions throughout the school year. These are online, virtual, in-person, or blended classes; students choose whatever works best. As an East Central High School student, there is potentially a full scholarship for these courses, and books are potentially free.

Save Time, Save Money, Get a Degree

The Associate Accelerated Program (ASAP) is an 11-month program, which is student focused and designed to support, encourage, and mentor students throughout their first year of college. This program is great for students who prefer smaller class sizes and who prefer to be on a first name basis with their professors. ASAP works with students to build confidence before transferring to a 4-year university to get their bachelor’s degree or going into the workforce. Applications are now being accepted for the next cohort. DropZone

It has been a great start to the 2023-2024 school year for DropZone. Students have been working hard to keep every student in the school with a functioning Chromebook, even in the event their Chromebook would need repair. To date, DropZone has worked in troubleshooting more than 185 technical issues, not including those that are a “quick fix” allowing us to make a quick repair and send students on their way without skipping a beat.

DropZone has also been hard at work the past few weeks working in conjunction with the I.T. department to ensure that all Chromebooks were “Bluebook” ready for PSAT testing on October 25th. With a lot of hustle and attention to detail, all Sophomores and Juniors were ready and able to test on their Chromebooks. Well done to the Student Tech Team as testing could not have happened without you.

The Trojan Exchange

Who they are: These are a group of students at East Central High School who do the behind the scenes work for the Trojan Exchange. They help by making shirt designs, talking to teachers, and much more. The managers are split between two class periods so we have a total of 10 managers. For operations managers we have Nathan Graf, Colin Harill, and Dylan Maxwell. Next for marketing managers we have Payge Callahan, Justin Wuestifeld, and Brayden Miller. For finance managers we have Ian Maxwell and Noah Mersmann. Finally we have technology managers who are Soraya Leurck and Kaia Booth.

What they do: The Trojan Exchange offers many positions as a junior and senior. The managers are a group of students that support the officers. Each manager has their own position and works with their officer one on one. This past month the managers have been assisting the officers by hosting a dodgeball tournament at the school. The managers also accompanied the officers to sell Tackle Cancer Shirts at the football game.

Where we are located: We are based out of the Trojan Exchange store in East Central High School. We use our store cart to come to all of the home football games, and sometimes other sports games. The Trojan Exchange also holds events around the school.

Our Why: The managers play a key role in the Trojan Exchange. They help the officers and learn how to operate a business. This month the managers did a lot of the behind the scenes work. For example, they put up flyers around the school promoting the Dodgeball Tournament along with working the tournament. The Trojan Exchange wants to highlight the managers for putting all their hard work and dedication into our student led business.

Our mission in the Trojan Exchange is to give students the opportunity to get hands-on business experience. The profit we earn off of our merchandise goes directly towards our senior scholarships. We thank you for your continued support towards our business! We are EC!

Throughout the past month in my engineering classes, the students have been carrying out a number of different types of projects/assignments. Recently, the Introduction to Engineering and Design classes have been working on a Toy Car Project on Autodesk Inventor. The students were giving working drawings and had to 3D model the Toy Car. Once they finish the original Toy Car, they will be making modifications to the cars and eventually the students will vote on which ones are the best. The top two vote getters from each of my IED classes will get to 3D print their modified Toy Car. One of the original toy cars is pictured this month. Next month, I will post the winning modified cars.

The Civil Engineering class has spent the majority of the last few weeks learning how to use Revit software. We finished up creating a 12’ x 16’ Shed, and have started following a tutorial to create a model house. Last week, we also were working with cost estimations when it comes to pouring concrete pads, and all of the framing materials needed to build a structure.

The Computer-aided-Design class has been working with Autodesk Inventor 2024 software. They have been creating multiple drawings of parts as well as creating technical drawings on the software. We started with some practice parts, but they also had an opportunity to work with the EC Trojan Exchange and design a trophy for their Dodgeball Tournament. The winning design came from Kollen Galey and is pictured below. His design was chosen by Mrs. Moorman’s class and then 3D printed. Not only did he do a great job, but I feel like my entire class came up with some great design ideas.

Throughout the last month, the Aerospace Engineering class has been working with finishing up their gliders, Air Traffic Control Simulations, learning how to use VOR, and then using that knowledge to help them on their “Cross Country” flight simulations on X-plane flight simulator.

Who’s afraid of AI? Not Mrs. Tucker’s classes. Using Adobe Firefly’s Text-to-Image feature, students wrote a descriptive prompt and then had the AI generate images to match. Students were encouraged to tweak their original prompts to add details and interest. They also explored effects and styles to create their masterpieces. AI is here to stay, and Mrs. Tucker’s students are making the most of it. Here are some of the results:

Mr. Meiners’ English 10 students are starting a Research/Debate Project. Students will work with a partner to research a contemporary topic, write a position paper, and formulate a debate. They have also discussed tips for spotting information and how to find a quality source.

Students in Ms. Huber’s English 9 are currently working on a persuasive essay over the novel Of Mice and Men. Also, we have been discussing the historical events surrounding Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird.

Mrs. Cecil’s English 10 students are busy researching! They just got into their research and debate unit. Students will research the affirmative or negative side of their topic, write a paper, and eventually have a debate with the student researching the opposite side of their topic.

Mrs. Goodpaster’s seniors are analyzing Macbeth and discussing the consequences of guilt, and her sophomores are creating claims, counterclaims, and rebuttals before studying reliable resources in preparation for their first big paper of the year.

While also enjoying Halloween, the students in Ms. Jackson’s Ivy Tech English 111 are practicing vocabulary skills using Membean.

Mrs. Ketcham’s Honors English 12 students are identifying and analyzing elements of a medieval romance while reading “Sir Gawain & the Green Knight” before they begin to study Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Mrs. Ketcham’s AP Literature students are deepening their knowledge of poetry by analyzing and teaching their peers a classic poem.

Child Development

The students in Advanced Child Development Class are beginning to experience parenthood by caring for the Real Care Baby Simulators. This allows students to understand the responsibilities and demands of an infant. They have to figure out how to meet the needs of the Real Care Baby by feeding, burping, rocking or changing the diaper. They also need to make sure that the Real Care Baby is not neglected and they must respond within two minutes. Other infant care skills are also reinforced including car seat usage, changing clothes and supporting the head and neck.

Advanced Fashion and Textiles

The Advanced Fashion and Textiles Class has completed making a festive fall fabric pumpkin. They also mastered hand hemming and they are ready to hem any garment that needs hemmed.

Education Professions I

The Education Professions I class is currently studying the Modern History of Education from the 1940’s through the Present. Students have learned a lot about laws that have impacted their own education.

Education Professions II

Members of the Education Professions II class have been studying the various positions in a Special Education Program. Through this topic, Mrs. Kelly Roth, Director of Students Services shared the various roles at Sunman Dearborn Schools within our Special Education Program with the students in the Education Professions class.

FCCLA

National FCCLA 1st Vice President, Mak Kelley represented East Central FCCLA at the National FCCLA Capitol Leadership Conference very well during Fall Break. She advocated for FCCLA and Family and Consumer Sciences with our Federal legislators. Her national officer team did an amazing job!

East Central FCCLA/FFA held their annual hayride event on Oct. 19th. Over 100 students attended the hayride which was held at the FFA Chapter President’s home of Riley Shumate. We would like to thank the Shumate family for hosting this event.

On October 24th, the Eat Central FCCLA went to the North Dearborn Village in Logan and carved pumpkins with the residents. We also served Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup, with a dessert choice of apple crisp alamode or brownie alamode. The entire meal was made by the East Central Culinary Program. Over 30 members attended this afterschool event. All the students and residents had a great time!

The East Central FCCLA also participated in Trunk or Treat at both Sunman Elementary and North Dearborn Elementary.

On October 4, Mrs. Gulasy’s Digital Photography Class had an amazing learning opportunity to go on a field trip to downtown Lawrenceburg, Indiana where they participated on a “photo walk” with photographer, AJ Waltz. .. The students met up at Ivy Tech and AJ taught the students how to hold a camera, getting the best results with your camera gear, safety on location, creating properly exposed photos, focal lengths, and different camera modes. Afterwards the students ventured out all over Lawrenceburg where he created a map and each location on the photo walk, they would be given a “break out session” and asked to create a photograph with certain criteria within 5 to 10 mins. The students walked around to 11 locations throughout Lawrenceburg learning about different apertures, shutter speeds, lighting, and camera angles to achieve the best shot.

Afterwards, Strong's Pizza catered dinner for the students and the students got the awesome opportunity to learn how to edit their photography workflow using the software Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop. In addition, K and R Photography donated $100 in gift certificates for the winning photographs from the photo walk. A HUGE thank you to AJ Waltz, Carson Emmilie, and all the photographers for giving the students an awesome photography experience!

Congratulations to Madge Flowers for receiving “Best of Show” in the high school art competition at the Versailles Pumpkin Festival. In addition to receiving “Best of Show”, her drawing received the “People's Choice Award” and the Tri-Kappa Award. Tri Kappa, the local sorority chapter, in Versailles, Indiana hosts this event and votes as well. Madge Flowers received a total of $125 in prize money. Other winners from East Central were Leah Kubitz where she received the Tri Kappa award in still life drawing and the Tri Kappa award in the “miscellaneous” division. Zoey Parr received 1rst place in the still life division.

Students have been really busy finishing up projects and closing out the first nine weeks. In ceramics class, students were using basic and advanced hand-building techniques to create a sculptural container with a fitted lid. Students formed two pinch pots together to make a large container with a fitted lid. This process was the basic shape for the container. Additive and subtractive methods were used to sculpt their container with a fitted lid. Students were really happy with the final outcome!

Have you ever thought about how your culture has influenced other cultures, or has been influenced by other cultures? For the last Japanese club meeting, the club members had a Halloween party where they wore costumes and played games.

In Japan, for the last fifteen to twenty years, Halloween has been getting more and more popular, especially among the young people. They wear costumes of their favorite characters and attend Halloween-related events such as trick or treating. The characters they choose are surprisingly varied, from American Popular cultures to Japanese Otaku cultures. In the United States, I see more and more people wearing costumes of Japanese anime and videogame characters. It is interesting to see how the two cultures are mixed both in Japan and the United States.

The new officers, Avery Meyer, AJ Rumpke, Kyla Gilbreath, Lindsey Houseworth, Amberly Turner, Sarah Dehne, Kaiden Clark, Evan Rumpke and Noah Kallmeyer, have been working very well to prepare fun activities for the meetings. If you are interested in joining the club, come to room 109 after school every other Monday. The meeting usually lasts for one and a half hours. Everyone is welcome to join!

Our AP Stats students are working hard; learning about the importance of understanding probability and how to determine an event’s probability through real-life application. They are working on understanding the concept of probability through the basic probability rules: ie. two way tables, general addition rule, and venn diagrams. They are interpreting probabilities in relationship to other events as well as individual, independent probabilities. This week, they worked on deducing the probability that something will occur given a real world example. For example, rolling a dice or choosing a certain card from a deck. Today, they did a study to find the probability of rolling a six and presented the results to the class, then they compared,interpreted, and applied the results of the study to further understand the concepts presented.

The choir department presented their fall concert on Sunday, Oct. 22nd at 3:00p in the PAC. Our theme this year was Halloween. The students did a great job and gave some spectacular performances!

The “I do, We do, You do” looks a little different in PE classes as student-athletes sometimes step up to demonstrate their expert skills for others. Everyone competed in some friendly tennis and soccer tournaments and practiced a 5-minute meditation. Congratulations to Lily Gambrel for being the overall winner on the Pacer test.

Strength and Conditioning classes maxed out at the end of the quarter with a lot of new PR’s set. Students are currently working on new goals for the end of the semester.

The Athletic Training class has done a great job setting up for football games. They are busy reviewing the skeletal system in preparation for their upcoming visit to Beacon for a bio skills lab. While there, students will either learn to suture cuts or observe an operation on a shoulder cadaver. They will also get some hands-on training using surgical equipment.

As fall rolls along, a variety of activities and experiences in the science department continue to enhance student understanding of key concepts related to their respective fields.

Biology I: Students were able to identify the structures and functions of organelles within the animal and plant cells. Furthermore, students are learning about Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration. They are investigating how organic materials are created during the processes in plants where light energy is used to bond inorganic materials together to create carbohydrates and or lipids, and how the body can use these consumed materials to create an energy source compatible with the structures of the human body.

Principles of Biomedical Science: Students were able to graph and track the temperature of a simulated dead human.

Human Body Systems: Students were able to model the neuron and the functions of each part of the neuron.

Medical Interventions: Students were able to investigate possible improvements the human ear could have if an infection took part of their hearing.

Biology II: Students are discussing the process of heredity and the teachings of Gregor Mendel. They are creating and evaluating both Monohybrid and Dihybrid crosses of various traits in pea plants studied by Mendel.

Anatomy I: Students are investigating the Tissues of the human body. They are identifying where in the body they are found, their general functions, and any associated specialized cells that enable them to carry out their functions.

Physics: Students are wrapping up the Projectile Motion unit which incorporates the fundamentals of kinematics and the vector characteristics of velocity and applies them to the motion of a Projectile such as a punted football, or free throw.

Integrated Chem/Phys - Students are continuing mechanics material with our unit on Power and Energy. which are both functions of Work, and commonly factor into many daily experiences.

Chemistry II: Students finished differentiating between different types of bonding and are now focusing on building structures that represent covalent bonding. Students will use these models to evaluate structure and function of various molecules.

AP Chemistry: Students are working on the separation of mixtures through a variety of methods; including paper chromatography, evaporation, and distillation.

Chemistry: Students have completed formula writing and naming. They are currently finishing Lewis structures and geometries.

In Mr. Lewis' ACP Intro into American Politics class, students are creating their own political parties. They will eventually run a campaign and have an election within their own class period at the end of the semester.

In Mr. Owen's American History course, we are studying the era of Jacksonian Democracy and the rise of the Industrial Revolution in America. We are working on completing our Semester Projects involving the use of Primary Source Documents and the concept of Change Over Time. Ask your student about this bridge in Cincinnati:

In AP European History we are discussing the rise of Absolutism in Britain and France in the 17th and 18th centuries. Students are working on their Semester Projects involving a comparison of specific years throughout Europe. Ask your student about the significance of this painting from 1656.

In economics class, students have just completed a unit on business organizations. The primary focus of the unit was to compare and contrast sole proprietorships, partnerships, and corporations. Next week, students will be given an opportunity to create their own sole proprietorship or partnership and share their ideas with their classmates.

Internship program

Did you know some East Central students participate in an internship program? As part of their preparation for entering the workforce after graduation these students work during the school day under the supervision of school staff to learn new skills and independence in the workplace. We currently have East Central students interning at Skyline Chili, BP, and Harrison Trail Health Campus. We are excited to announce we are currently developing a partnership with the Ars Cafe & Meeting House.

Fall Sports Highlights:

In the last newsletter, we talked about the great team performances from the fall sports but here are some student-athletes with great individual accomplishments:
*In girls golf, Rowan Pies (soph.) qualified for girls golf state championships which makes her the first girl in 25+ years to make it to that level. In the 36-hole event on Friday, Sept. 29th and Saturday, Sept. 30th, Rowan shot a combined (+9) to finish T-14th place overall (out of 108 golfers). She tied for the lowest round shot on the 2nd day with an even par (E) score.

*In cross country, Callie Bentley (soph.) qualified for state and finished on the podium with a 23rd place finish, the first Trojan in East Central history to do so. Callie has broken her own school record multiple times this season. Additionally, Jena Weiler (Freshman) also qualified for state and finished in 58th place (out of 249 runners). On the boys side, Bradyn Hatten (junior) was the first boy to qualify for the state meet in school history. He is also the current record holder.

*In girls soccer, Lexi Watkins (senior) finished her stellar career off as the all-time career assist leader (while missing her entire sophomore season due to injury). She also has the single-season assist record and single-season goals scored record in Program history. Lexi will further her playing career at Ball State Univ.

*Additionally in girls soccer, Olivia Hopper (senior) also ended a career atop the Program record books. After a terrific (4) year Varsity career, Olivia is the all-time leader in goals scored in a career and points scored in a career (points + assists). She was a 4-time All-Conference selection. Olivia will further her playing career at Indiana State Univ.

*On the gridiron, Josh Ringer (senior) has also put himself in the record books in the storied football program. He recently surpassed 6,000 career rushing yards as well as having the most rushing yards in school history. He also has the points touchdowns and points scored in Program history. His march for Mr. Football selection marches on!

*Addtionally in the football program, QB Cole Burton (senior) recently set the new record for most touchdown passes thrown in Program history. Cole finds himself atop other statistical categories in school history.

*Lastly, WR Ryan Brotherton (senior) also recently broke a Program record to become the all-time touchdown receptions leader in school history. As the team continues to march forward, Ryan can also find himself atop other statistical categories to place his name atop several records.
