Senior Farewell This Week
Dear River Hill Families,
As we approach the closing weeks of the academic year, our school is bustling with noteworthy accomplishments and significant milestones. This past week marked the beginning of the end for the Class of 2024, a moment that is always bittersweet for me as we prepare to bid farewell to an outstanding group of seniors.
Our seniors have been diligently completing their final exams, and this Friday we held our first official graduation rehearsal. Graduation tickets, programs, and caps and gowns were distributed, signaling that the big day is just around the corner. Our seniors will wrap up their exams tomorrow, and we look forward to a week filled with graduation rehearsals, the senior assembly, a celebratory picnic, and our senior awards night. Their last day will be this Wednesday, May 22.
Last week was bustling with activity and achievement –congratulations to Lily Peng, who received the Award for Political Science and Government from Howard County Executive, Dr. Calvin Ball, for her exceptional work in AAPI education and advocacy. Lily, an orchestra student, and I rushed from this event to the Spring Orchestra Concert at River Hill. Kudos to Mr. Kim and our orchestra students for a concert that was nothing short of spectacular. The talent displayed was truly awe-inspiring. On Thursday, we had Guitarpolooza, a showcase of the unique celebration of guitar talents in our school. I believe we are the only high school with such a concert! What a fun night! Congratulations to teachers Mr. McCready and Mr. Kim for a great concert. Additionally, the musical Six, Teen Addition, was performed by our musical theater students was a resounding success, showcasing the incredible abilities of our young performers. This musical is now on my list of things to see on Broadway. Thank you Ms. Meyer and students for inspiring me with your wonderful performance!
In athletics, our softball team's season concluded with a tough game against Reservoir, they showed commendable spirit. Our girls fought hard with Cameron Lowe hitting two home runs and Lux Sheplee with an awesome double play. Congratulations ladies and Coach Rosenbaum on a great season. Our baseball team advanced to the regional championship, showcasing remarkable skill and determination. It was a battle of the pitchers in the Regional Championship with ace Henry Zatkowski outdueling the opoising pitcher as the Hawks defeated Sherwood (a three-peat State Champion team at the 4A level) in extra innings, 2-0. It was then on to the state quarterfinals and a home game the very next day against Chesapeake where our boys played hard but came up short 0-4 in the end. I want to thank Coach Craig and the boys for a terrific season. They have every reason to hold their heads up high. It was a pleasure and honor to watch them play. In Track and Field, our athletes continue to excel, with several securing spots to compete at the state level. Congratulations to all for their outstanding performances in the regional competitions. Our girls finished third in the region -- congratulations ladies. Several of our athletes will be moving on to compete at states. Congratulations to Karell Clement who finished 3rd in the Boys 100m and 5th in the boys 200m, Marella Virmani, 2nd in girls 800m, Lauren Virmani, 3rd in girls 800m, and Nikita Mohan, 5th in girls 800m. Marella Virmani finished 1st in the girls 1600m and Lauren Virmani, finished 2nd. Lauren also finished 1st in the girls 3200m with Alyssa Mattes finishing 8th. Yusuf Shabazz finished 6th in boys long jump and freshman Saniya Carter finished 4th in the girls long jump. Sophomore Camille Nesmith continues to dominate in the girls triple jump with a 2nd place finish. River Hill finished 2nd in the boys 4x100. Congratulations to Karell Clement, Yusuf Shabazz, Ryan Rimmer, and Nicholas Robertson! In the girls 4x400, River Hill placed 4th. Congratulations to Alyssa Mattes, Marella Virmani, Nikita Mohan, and Madison Berge. Last, and certainly not least is our outstanding girls 4x800 team who continue to blow out the competition finishing 1st. Well done Alyssa Mattes, Lauren Virmani, Marella Virmani, and Nikita Mohan. We wish you all the best as you move on to states!
Lastly, I had the pleasure of attending the Black Leadership Union BLU Gala, a fantastic evening that underscored the strength and spirit of our community. It was an evening of formal attire, dinner, dancing, and comraderie.Thank you to everyone involved, especially our BLU-PAC parents, for making the night so special.
