Celebrating Advent, Finishing Strong and Embracing Change
Dear BCSS Parents, Students, and Faculty,
As we near the close of the calendar year and first semester, we find ourselves in the season of Advent, a time to reflect, prepare, and anticipate the joy and hope that the birth of Jesus brings. It’s also an important moment to reflect on how we, as a school community, can finish the year strong in every area of our lives. December offers an opportunity not only to celebrate the hope of Christ’s coming but also to embrace the courage needed to face challenges and grow in our faith, character, and academics.
Advent: A Time of Preparation and Hope
Advent is a season that calls us to prepare spiritually, waiting in joyful anticipation for the coming of Christ. It’s a reminder that hope and transformation is always possible. This season of waiting is a powerful moment for us to pause, reflect, and prepare our hearts and minds, not only for Christmas but for the new opportunities that lie ahead.
As we celebrate Advent, let us also reflect on our mission here at BCSS—to support our students in reaching their full potential spiritually, academically, physically, and socially so that they can become the Light of Christ in the world. This mission is at the heart of everything we do, and Advent offers us a unique opportunity to deepen our commitment to these values. As we wait for the coming of Christ, we can also prepare ourselves to grow in all aspects of life—learning, leadership, and faith.
Courage and the Mission to Finish Strong
This year, our word of the year is Courage. In the face of challenges—whether they are academic, social, or spiritual—God calls us to be strong and courageous. This theme is especially timely as we near the end of the semester, a time when students are pushing through finals, wrapping up projects, and setting goals for the future.
Our focus scripture, Joshua 1:9, reminds us of this: "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:9). This verse is a powerful reminder that God is with us through every challenge, every test, and every new opportunity. It calls us to act with boldness and confidence, knowing that we are not alone. Whether you're tackling a difficult subject, facing the pressure of final exams, or stepping out of your comfort zone in social situations, remember that courage is not the absence of fear but the willingness to act in spite of it.
As we finish the month of December, I encourage every student to embrace courage in their academic work, their relationships, and their faith. Take the time to finish your projects, study for your exams, and step up as a leader in your community with the confidence that you are supported by your school, your family, and most importantly, by God.
Finishing Strong with Leadership
The Leader in Me program continues to be a guiding force in helping our students develop the skills they need to thrive, and the habits we are cultivating this year align perfectly with our mission and word of the year. The habit of "Begin with the End in Mind" calls us to set clear goals for what we want to achieve, while "Put First Things First" encourages us to prioritize the most important tasks.
These habits, along with the courage to tackle challenges head-on, will help students stay focused and finish the semester strong. The practice of Synergy—working together—will also be key in these final weeks. As we prepare for exams and complete projects, remember that you are not alone. Your classmates, teachers, and families are here to support you. Take the opportunity to collaborate, ask for help, and encourage each other as we work toward success.
Building Character and Leadership
At BCSS, we believe that leadership is rooted in strong character. Advent reminds us of the importance of integrity—doing what is right even when no one is watching. As we prepare for the celebration of Christ’s birth, we are called to reflect His light in all that we do. Whether it’s through acts of kindness, honesty in our work, or showing perseverance in the face of difficulty, we are building the character that will guide us throughout our lives. Remember that courage also involves standing firm in your values, even when it’s hard. In the coming weeks, take moments to reflect on how you can embody courage in your actions and decisions. Let’s lead with integrity and strength, becoming the Light of Christ in the world.
Our Mission: Reaching Our Full Potential
At BCSS, we are committed to helping every student reach their potential spiritually, academically, physically, and socially. In this Advent season, we challenge you to reflect on your growth in each of these areas and to finish the semester with courage and determination. Together, with the support of our families, faculty, and the strength that comes from faith, we can achieve great things and prepare ourselves to shine as the Light of Christ in our world.
As we celebrate Advent, may we all be filled with the courage to finish this semester strong—knowing that God is with us every step of the way. May the peace and hope of this season inspire you to reflect on your journey and approach the end of the year with boldness and confidence. Let’s continue our courageous journey to grow in character, in leadership, and in faith as we prepare to enter a new year filled with new possibilities.
With gratitude and blessings,
Mrs. Douglas

Fall Highlights in the Science Department
Chemistry: We have been learning about the periodic table and details about the elements including electron configuration. For any element in the table, students now know how to predict where all the electrons are located. A favorite day was our Mole Day celebration. The Mole in chemistry is a big deal! It is not the furry little creature you might be thinking about. A Mole in chemistry is 6.022 x 1023 atoms and is called Avogadro’s number. We had a “mole in one” contest and Alyssa and Camden were the winners.
Integrated Science: We are nearing the end of the physics portion of this course. Students have learned about speed, velocity, acceleration, force, Newton’s Laws, energy, and momentum. They have been active in the lab, doing a variety of experiments to reinforce concepts. They have collected and graphed data showing relationships between variables. In these pictures, students are learning about centripetal force, collecting data to prove what happens when the radius is shortened or the mass is increased.

Forensics: We have been learning about the different types of crime scene evidence and ways to recover it. The students have learned about the history of forensics and spent time studying physical evidence, including learning how to take fingerprints and dust fingerprints left on objects. Blood spatter and additional crime scene evidence are yet to come.
Biology: We started the year studying the characteristics of life. Next, the class learned how to use microscopes and prepare slides by looking at pond water organisms. We have studied photosynthesis and cellular respiration and their important relationship. In our cell structure and function unit, students will look at cells under the microscopes and develop cell models.
Anatomy and Physiology: This class began by going over important terminology needed in studying the body's systems. We learned to use directional terms, body landmarks, planes, and quadrants of the body. We also studied different tissue types and where they are found. In the last unit, we learned about the integumentary (skin) system and other covers. We are moving into study of the skeletal system with emphasis on how bones work in movement, protection, mineral storage, and blood cell formation. Students will learn about and identify many of the 206 bones we all have.

Rich and Angie Era Night
Former DB girls basketball players and friends are invited to help us celebrate the leadership of Rich & Angie Hach, along with their assistant coaches, at the Varsity Girls Basketball game at Don Bosco on December 2.
Our girls basketball program has a history of hard work, grit, and success, thanks to all who participated along the way. Our current program is working hard to strengthen itself at the high school and youth level. Did you know that an alumni group is raising funds to renovate the girls' locker room? Game time is 6:30 so come around 6 PM to take a look at the room and plans. If you are a DB alum you may be surprised to see the locker room has not changed since you were in high school! More info via the Facebook Event.
