This interactive Bible time is a great way for your family to gather around God's Word and read, listen, watch, sing, and do activities together that help you learn more about God's great love for you in Jesus.

What should a king look like?

We sometimes judge a person by the way they look. But we can't tell what someone is really like just by looking at them. God told the prophet Samuel to go to Bethlehem, because He was going to choose one of Jesse's sons as the new king of Israel. Samuel thought that God would choose the oldest, tallest, most handsome son to be the new king. But God doesn't look at the outside of a person, He looks at the heart. God saw that the youngest son of Jesse loved God with his whole heart, and so God chose shepherd boy David to be the next king.

Dear Lord Jesus, thank You for bringing us together to study Your Word. Help us learn how God sometimes chooses unlikely people to do His work. Guide us to see how You work in our lives to do Your will. In Your name we pray. Amen.

• Why did God choose David to be king?
• David took care of sheep when he was a boy. David took care of the people of Israel when he was king. How can you care for other people?
• David was a good shepherd and king, but he still sinned. A thousand years later, God sent another Shepherd and King to care for His people. Who was that?

God didn't choose David because he looked like a king. He didn't choose David because he was perfect or sinless. God looked in David's heart and knew that David would be a good king because he loved and trusted in God.

God calls each of us to care for other people in our homes, in our schools, and in our communities.

God sent Jesus, our Good Shepherd, to care for us, His people. Jesus is our heavenly King, who paid the price for our sins when He died on the cross so that we can one day live with Him in heaven!
