Black History Month honors the contributions of African Americans to U.S. history. Among the prominent figures are Madam C.J. Walker, who was the first U.S. woman to become a self-made millionaire; George Washington Carver, who derived nearly 300 products from the peanut; Rosa Parks, who sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott and galvanized the civil rights movement; and Shirley Chisholm, who was the first African American woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Test and expand your knowledge with this black history quiz. Entire WC community is welcome to participate. Prizes will be awarded.
Washington DC Diversity Trip Student Reflections

Every year the Office of D&I offers A civil rights tour of Washington DC. On this trip, Students visit three notable cultural museums. The Museum of African American History and Culture, The American Indian Museum, and the US Holocaust Museum. Through interacting with the content within these museums, students will have gained a better sense of history and culture. This lunchtime session is an opportunity to hear their personal reflections.

Each year the Office of D&I hosts an BHM Luncheon. This year the Office is excited to welcome guest speaker Dr. Julius Bailey, . Lunch is provided by D&I to those attending the presentation.
Julius's Bio
Dr. Julius Bailey is an award-winning author and educator. He is a philosopher, cultural critic, social theorist and diversity lecturer. Dr. Bailey has been a guest on numerous media outlets, and is often sought to speak at colleges, prisons, churches, and for community organizations across America. He has authored five academic books and one memoir including the award-winning Racial Realities and Post-Racial Dreams: The Age of Obama and Beyond and his current book, Racism, Hypocrisy and Bad Faith: A Moral Challenge to the America I Love. He has edited two others, notably the widely circulated The Cultural Impact of Kanye West. He is currently Director of Pre-Law and Justice, Law and Public Policy at Wittenberg. He currently hosts an online radio show, “Straight no Chaser with Dr. Julius Bailey,” through which he provides insight and guidance on social change.
Dr. Bailey has taught at Central State University (Wilberforce, Ohio), Fresno State University (California), Lewis University (Illinois) and Millikin University (Illinois). At the same time, he been active in his church, serving as a church administrator for a mid-size ministry since 2004. He has also continued to serve his community by serving as the education director for Youth with a Positive Direction, one of Illinois’ after-school gems that provides positive outlets for at-risk youth. He is a highly sought-after diversity trainer, consulting in both the public and private sectors to help address long-standing issues of systemic racism, structural inequality, and incarceration politics.

The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center is a museum in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio, based on the history of the Underground Railroad. Opened in 2004, the center also pays tribute to all efforts to "abolish human enslavement and secure freedom for all people." Transportation and lunch will be provided. Open to the entire campus community. Contact Office of D&I for info.

Four women who embody the contemporary arts scene reveal their power to launch Women's History Month. POWER & PRESENCE is graced with world premieres by DCDC's Qarrianne Blayr and Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble's Winifred Harris. Countess V. Winfrey's evergreen huMAN/NAture receives a much-deserved revival. And Kia Smith, DCDC alum and one of Dance Magazine's "25 To Watch," brings her heralded company, South Chicago Dance Theatre, to our stage as guests.

After graduating from Harvard, Bryan Stevenson heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned or those not afforded proper representation. One of his first cases is that of Walter McMillian, who is sentenced to die in 1987 for the murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite evidence proving his innocence. In the years that follow, Stevenson encounters racism and legal and political maneuverings as he tirelessly fights for McMillian's life.

The legendary Billie Holiday, one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time, spent much of her career being adored by fans across the globe, all while the Federal Department of Narcotics targeted her with an undercover sting operation led by black Federal Agent Jimmy Fletcher, with whom she had a tumultuous affair. Inspired by her life story, THE UNITED STATES VS. BILLIE HOLIDAY intimately examines her struggles with addiction, fame and heartbreaking love.
