EWSD Selects Its Next Superintendent
After a nationwide search, the EWSD Board has named Dr. Mark Holodick as the next superintendent of the District. Holodick will officially begin on July 1, 2025.
Holodick comes to the EWSD after serving as Delaware’s Secretary of Education since January 2022. Before joining the Delaware Department of Education, he served for two years as a senior leadership specialist for the University of Delaware’s Delaware Academy for School Leadership (DASL). In this role, he coordinated the Governor’s Institute for School Leadership and served as lead faculty for DASL’s Principal Preparation Program. He also conducted research in collaboration with school districts and charter schools, and designed and facilitated research-informed professional development for school leaders.
From 2009-2020, Holodick served as superintendent of the Brandywine School District in Delaware, following a long history with the District as a student, teacher, assistant principal, and principal. Read the full press release here.
EWSD Proposed Budget
The EWSD Board and administration invite you to join them for a virtual conversation as part of the District’s BudgetTalk series on March 20 and 27 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Attend these sessions to ask questions and learn more about the proposed budget.
You can also learn more about the proposed budget in the EWSD annual report or by visiting the EWSD budget website, which includes answers to frequently asked questions, budget updates, and both presentations and videos from recent Board meetings.
2025-26 Calendar/2025 Last Day Update
At the EWSD Board meeting on March 11, the Board approved the 2025-26 school calendar. Please also note that after three school cancellations so far this year, the final day for students will now be Friday, June 13, 2025. The last day of school will be a half day.
Measles Reported in Vermont
On March 11, a case of measles was reported in Vermont. Measles is a very contagious respiratory virus that can be dangerous, especially for babies, young children, and unvaccinated individuals.
To learn more about measles and how to keep you and your family healthy, contact your doctor or visit the Vermont Department of Health Measles website.
State Assessment Letter - Grades 3-11
We will administer the Vermont Agency of Education State Assessments again this spring. This will be our third year administering the Vermont Comprehensive Assessment Program (VTCAP).
All students in grades 3-9 will participate in this annual academic assessment in mathematics and English language arts, and all students in grades 5, 8, and 11 will participate in this annual academic assessment in science. Students with the most significant disabilities may fulfill this requirement by participating in the Multi-State Alternate Assessment (MSAA). In that case, you will be notified separately by your child’s special education case manager, and this will be indicated on your child’s individualized education plan.
The VTCAP and MSAA collectively fulfill Vermont’s federal accountability requirements under the Every Student Succeeds Act regarding assessing academic proficiency in mathematics, English language arts, and science. To read the full letter, view this document.

Inclusive Celebrations & Recognition Days
Ramadan began on February 28 and will continue through March 29. The dates for Ramadan vary around the world because they are based on moon cycles. In order to put more focus into Allah, many Muslims fast during all daylight hours during Ramadan. The fast is broken with the Iftar meal, which takes place after sunset. Regular Muslim practices of daily prayer and refraining from greed, envy, etc. take on added significance during Ramadan. Access information and activities to talk with kids about Ramadan on this Globe Trottin’ Kids site.
Holi, also known as the festival of colors, took place on March 14. The day involves the throwing of ‘gulal,' a colored powder that is considered to be a symbol of joy and love. Holi provides an opportunity to welcome spring, and it represents the triumph of good over evil. Access resources about Holi at this PBS Learning Media site.
