8th Grade Community Project Launched!
The Community Project launch was a success! Student received an overview of the requirements and timeline of our IB MYP capstone community service project on Tuesday 11/19. During Advisory on Tuesday 11/26, students will begin their research and brainstorming for their project. All lesson materials will be located on their Advisory class notebook, accessible through Canvas. Please reach out to your students' advisory teacher or our IB Coordinator Ms. Daniels (Caitlin.Daniels@k12.dc.gov) with any questions.
High School Recommendation Requests
All students requesting a recommendation for high school must complete the following steps:
1. Have a personal conversation with your teacher to request a recommendation.
2. Complete the recommendation request form (linked below by team).
3. Share your teachers' email on the school's application site.
4. Send the teacher an email to let them know you completed the form and thank them for their time.
As Deal teachers receive many recommendation requests, all requests should be submitted at least two weeks prior to the application school's deadline and will be completed in the order they are received. Recommendations are completed at the discretion of the teacher. Students are responsible for maintaining positive relationships with their teacher and meeting high academic expectations.
While completing this form, students are required to submit complete, thoughtful responses that reflect the time and energy they expect from their recommending teacher. Incomplete or insufficient responses may result in the teacher not submitting a recommendation.

If your student needs a recommendation from a teacher not on these form (including 7th grade teachers), please email that teacher directly.

This Week in Academics on Team Kendrick
Ms. Walters: History
Last week students finished up their unit 2 by having a seminar discussion about the Revolutionary War. Students were then able to learn about keys battles of the Revolutionary War and analyzed which battle they thought was the most significant in the War.
Next week students will learn about Revolutionary War spies to prepare for their field trip!
- Monday: Culper Ring
- Tuesday: Spy Techniques
After the holiday break we will begin unit 3, The Constitution! As a reminder we go on our field trip December 3rd, please make sure that you have signed a permission slip for your child.
Ms. Cunha: English
This week in ELA students began the process of building a multi-paragraph expository essay in preparation for our first formative assessment of Unit 2 which will mirror the "Research Simulation Task" on the end of year DC Cape test. Students read, annotated, and analyzed 2 informational texts which portrayed different conceptions of the idea of race and identity. We ended the week with learning a protocol for unpacking a writing prompt and writing thesis statements.
Next week, we will review multiple-choice test taking strategies and, as promised, we will watch the original 1961 production of "A Raisin in the Sun" featuring Claudia McNeil, Diana Sands, and Sidney Poitier. Students will compare and contrast the screenplay and the movie as they watch.
Homework: Reading Plus is back! Students will be assigned the number of Reading Plus lessons that corresponds with the number of school days in the week. Reading Plus is tracked from Monday - Sunday (11:59pm). This week students were assigned 5 lessons (3 vocabulary and 2 reading). Next week, students will only be assigned 2 vocabulary lessons.
Reminder: Students should have their own copy of 145th Street Short Stories in class starting December 9th!
