Surfside Shark Bites
Week of November 4 - 8, 2024
A Note From Principal Frandsen
Hello, Surfside families!
This weekend we celebrate Veterans Day. If you serve or have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, we thank you for your service to our incredible country. It is your sacrifice, and the sacrifices of the families of service members, that have established and maintained the rights and privileges we enjoy as Americans, thank you! In honor of our Veterans, Monday, November 11 is a holiday so there will be no school.
Please take a minute to check with your student on their progress in their classes. The holidays are right around the corner and it is of the utmost importance that students are caught up on their assignments. Remember that you can check your students' progress on Aeries and/or with your students' teachers. If you need assistance with this, please reach out, we are your partners in educating your students and are here to help.
Have a great weekend!

Shark Nibbles…K-5th Updates
Dear Families,
Students continue to learn and grow in multiple ways. One way children learn is through example and we have the amazing opportunity to have our students interact with the toddlers on campus. They read them stories, play with them, and show them kindness and how the world works. It warms my heart to see our students develop these character traits and the smiles after playing with the toddlers is priceless.
Thank you for turning in Unit 3 work today!
PE/Science Challenge:
Go for a walk/run/swim and use your 5 senses (eyes, ears, mouth, nose, hands). What do you see? What do you hear? Can you smell anything? What does the ground and your shoes feel like as you walk? How does walking work? Ask questions about how the world works.

Nov 11: Veteran’s Day (No School)- No Virtual or In-person
Nov 25-29: Thanksgiving Week (No School)- No Virtual or In-person
Dec 6: Turn in Unit 4

Middle School…
Thank you for an amazing week!
Work samples, P.E. logs & P.E. Google Classroom assignments were due today, Friday, November 8, 2024. Work samples submitted should reflect a high caliber of work. Work samples should be included from each course workbook. Samples may be submitted as original pages, photos, copies or digital pdfs. A great way to submit samples digitally is to use the Genius Scan App!
P.E. logs must be turned for P.E. credit. P.E. logs must include dates, a variety of activities & time values. For this Attendance month P.E. logs should reflect workouts/exercise spanning October 11, 2024 - November 8, 2024.
Please continue to monitor your student’s coursework on Edmentum, making sure they remain on pace while earning grades we can all be proud of. Remember, parents are the primary learning coaches for their child. Additional tutoring is available free of charge at the Public Library, and through Tutor.com.
Enjoy the three day weekend in honor of Veteran’s Day!

New District Cell Phone Policy
"During the Day, Off and Away"
To create a focused learning environment and support student mental health, Oceanside Unified School District will now require all student cell phones to be off and stowed in backpacks upon entering campus and remain off until leaving. Exceptions are made for students with IEPs or 504 plans if specified for medical or anxiety-related needs, as determined by site administration. Classrooms have landlines for students to contact parents if needed, and students will have access to their phones during emergencies. The policy aims to reduce distractions, enhance engagement, and prevent cyberbullying, while also reducing the risk of phone theft or loss. Support and disciplinary actions for policy violations could include warnings, phone calls home, and phone confiscations, with increasing consequences for repeated offenses. OUSD is committed to student safety and mental health, fostering academic and emotional growth. For more details, refer to OUSD's Handbook.
