Headteacher's Message
Dear Families
We’ve had a fantastic start to the term, and I’m delighted to see such a positive attitude across the school. Students have been earning an impressive number of positive points in lessons, reflecting their hard work and commitment. Let’s keep this momentum going as we continue through the term – well done to everyone!
A quick reminder about attendance: it’s crucial for maintaining progress and learning. We’ve recently updated our absence reporting process. If your child is unable to attend school, please ensure you complete this Reporting Student Absence form by 08:30 on each day of absence. The form can also be found on our website. This helps us to support your child effectively.
Today’s second-hand uniform sale has been a great success – thank you to our wonderful PTA and everyone who attended! Looking ahead, the next uniform sale will be held on 6 March, and the PTA will also host a Plant Sale on 26 April. At the uniform sale, you’ll find not just a wide range of second-hand uniform and PE kit but also study aids to help students through the examination years.
On another note, we’re pleased to announce that from next Friday, the 681 school bus will leave at 15:05 from Broom Road, bringing the Friday service in line with the Monday to Thursday schedule.
Finally, it’s been wonderful to see such strong engagement with clubs and extracurricular activities during this week’s ‘launch week.’ These opportunities are a valuable part of school life, and it’s fantastic to see so many students taking advantage of them.
Thank you as always for your support, and I hope you have a lovely weekend!
Kind regards
Mr P Grills

Eleven Year 11 girls went to The Mathematical Institute at Oxford University on Tuesday to learn more about Mathematics and where it can take you. The students also had the opportunity to ask current Oxford University students for their advice and experiences of university to date. 📏📐
Congratulations to our star students of the week! ⭐
Reporting Student Absence
To streamline our processes and ensure accurate attendance records, all absences must now be reported using our designated student absence form. Families need to report absence by 08:30 on each day of absence.
The form will go live on the school website from Monday 13 January and can be accessed via this link. The form can be found on our website in two places:
- ‘Parent Links’ on the top left corner
- On the ‘Parents’ section and under the subheading of ‘Attendance & Absence’
If you have any queries about our attendance procedures, please refer to our Attendance Policy.

A message from Mrs Wijesuriya, Teacher of MFL
Last week we celebrated la galette des rois (the king’s cake) as part of a French tradition which takes place on 6 January. Initially, this was to celebrate Epiphany — the day when the three Wise Men visited Baby Jesus, but it is now more a culinary tradition.
On this day, people buy a galette from the boulangerie and eat the galette at home with their family.
The youngest in the family goes under the table and shouts out who gets each slice. Last week Jack and Freddy were the youngest and had to go under the table.
In each galette there is a fève (a trinket), and whoever gets the slice with the fève becomes the king or the queen and gets to wear the crown. Rory and Can both got the fève and therefore got to be the kings and wear the crown!
Highflyers Update
An update from Mr Evans, Teacher of Science
British Physics Olympiad
Fifteen of our most able Year 13 Physics students recently entered this prestigious national competition and we have achieved some exceptional results. 3,777 top Physics students from 550 schools in the UK and the Far East (particularly from the independent and selective grammar schools) entered the competition. Edward Paterson achieved a Top Gold Award, placing him in the top 4% of all students, with Rowan Scott and Antonio Moraga also achieving Gold. As such, we have 3 of the top 650 Physics students in the UK and beyond! Additionally, 4 students secured Silver, 7 students secured Bronze, and 1 student received a Commendation. Well done to all the students! Along with other enrichment, such as our recent visit to Geneva and CERN, such results are testament to the quality of our offer in Physics in the Sixth Form.
Oxbridge
We were delighted to welcome back Richard Paterson (studying Physics at Oxford) and George Bannon (studying Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford) who delivered a presentation to many of our high ability Year 12 students and our Year 11 High Flyers cohort, focusing on how to prepare for Oxbridge applications and life at Oxford. Our current Year 13 Oxbridge applicants will all know if they will receive an offer of a place by the end of January.
Year 11 High Flyers Academic Interviews
Over the next two weeks, I will be meeting with each student in the Year 11 High Flyers cohort to review study strategies to achieve the top grades, and to offer guidance on post-16 options. The previous Year 11 High Flyers cohort found these meetings extremely valuable. It is important students prepare thoroughly for these meetings.
