Shivang G's Eagle Journey
I joined Troop 89 in May of 2019 after my friend Vishnu (fellow Troop 89 scout) convinced me to attend a meeting to satisfy the first-class requirement. Joining the program enabled me to discover myself, such as my potential as a leader in my community along with my weaknesses in organization and preparation.
The first trip I attended was backpacking in Fire Island, where we took ferries to Fire Island in New York and spent the weekend camping on the beach. This trip introduced me to scouting: a brotherhood between fellow scouts that taught us lessons about the outdoors and leadership. In addition to attending the Fire Island trip, I went on Troop 89’s annual trip to Camp Ranachqua in New York, where I completed the mammal studies merit badge alongside doing the LEAF Program. I later went on the Batona Backpacking trip, where, as a young scout, I struggled to lift my 30-pound pack during a 7-mile hike in the Pine Barrens. Luckily, my fellow scouts were there to help me, carrying water and trail mix to keep me energized throughout the trip.
Over time, I continued to attend more trips and took on leadership positions that taught me important leadership lessons, such as webmaster, quartermaster, and junior assistant scoutmaster. The trip I enjoyed the most during my scouting journey was the 2021 canoeing trip, where scouts embarked on over 7 miles of canoeing along the Mullica River. This trip was different from others due to its adventurous nature: canoeing for a seemingly endless time until it was pitch black.
I completed my Eagle Scout project a couple of years later, where I faced barriers but overcame them. I initially put up two gates (identical to what I had proposed), but I was later informed that one of them violated an Americans with Disabilities Act measure, so I ripped it out of the ground using a hammer and chisel. I later installed another gate that met the requirements of the law. This project and other scouting experiences taught me that there will be challenges that all of us will face in our scouting journeys and life, but the skills we’ll learn in this program will help overcome them.
In the fall, I will be a freshman in college,
My last homeroom teacher was Mr. Collins in the 8th grade.
My favorite flavor of ice cream is also vanilla.
Omkaar B.'s Cycling trip
As the leader of this bike ride, I'm excited to create opportunities that enrich our scouts' experiences, promote fitness, and bring us closer together. The Canal Trail at Duke Island Park is perfect for this, with its beautiful views and great paths. Events like this aren’t just about getting some exercise; they're about building scout spirit. It's about teamwork, perseverance, and supporting each other. By joining in, each scout adds to the positivity and strengthens our troop. I was very glad seeing the turnout, I was only expecting 3-4 scouts to arrive. Based on the interest in bike rides in our troop, I hope more scouts take the initiative to plan bike rides in the future.
Summer Camp by Arnav Chamunya
My experience at this year's summer camp was significantly better than last year's. The quality of the food improved remarkably, thanks to the new cooks who provided a greater variety of options. Additionally, the food portions were larger, and the salad bar was always well-stocked, ensuring satisfying meals. The introduction of new water toys in the aquatics center greatly enhanced the experience, making it my favorite part of the camp. I also enjoyed how clean the campsite was when we arrived and liked how we were able to improve it further by adding flagpoles. One competition I particularly enjoyed was the shotgun competition, which allowed me to test my aim and shoot a shotgun. Overall, the camp was excellent, however, I believe there is room for improvement in the tetherball and volleyball courts, as they are not well-maintained and the tetherball often breaks.
Know your scout, Ritvik P.
Hi my name is Ritvik Prashar. My experience on the Mullica River trip was amazing. I loved the hike and got time to bond with my fellow scouts. My trip to summer camp was just as fun apart from being away from home for a week. I got my merit badges done and requirements that I needed done. Overall summer camp was a very fun experience for me.
My last year's homeroom teacher was Lauren Kolmer.
