"Bytes" From Your School Leader, Dr. Townsend
March 8, 2024
Greetings Phalen Virtual Leadership Academy Families,
Happy Friday! Happy Women History Month! What a wonderful Week 31 at PLA Virtual! I think the Groundhog may have been correct in his prediction this year. We had a few super cold days and a little snow even snuck in, but it did not last long.
Have you registered for Parent teacher Conferences? If not, please do so and get time that works best for you on Friday, March 15, 2024 on your calendar.
Daylight Savings Time arrives this Sunday, March 10. 2024. We will SPRING FORWARD!!! The time shifts forward one hour and we gain an additional hour of light in our day! Please do not forget to change your clocks, because we need everyone on time next week for another stellar week!
Let's give a HUGE round of applause to ALL our 2nd and 3rd Grade Scholars who completed IREAD across the state of Indiana this week!
We also MUST shout out our 11th Grade Juniors who completed their full-day SAT testing across the State of Indiana. They gave it their very best and had a chance to see their friends in person.
Our team was on the road and on the move as our scholars took their time and did their VERY best on both of these Indiana mandated assessments. A special thank you to our teachers as well who traveled to sites and had the opportunity to see our bight scholars in person.
If for some reason your scholars missed their test day, it is essential that we schedule a make-up day. Our testing coordinator has bene in touch with you via email and telephone, but if you missed any of those calls or messages, Please contact our State Testing Coordinator, Ms. Sepaniak, directly at csepaniak@phalenacademies.org.
Join us on Facebook and click the "like" button to follow and see all the many great things happening at PLA Virtual.
We look forward to seeing your scholar(s) on Monday, March 11, 2024 at 8:35am in class or your designated SAT or IREAD Make-up testing site for Week 32 at PLA Virtual!
With Gratitude,
Dr. Townsend, Principal

Need a meeting with Mrs. Moses? Book one here!
Mrs. Moses does social work, too!
I am filling in for Ms. Anderson while she is out if there is a student emergency.
Emergency defined: a student safety concern, meaning the student is in danger or is a present harm to self or others.
I can also refer you to local therapy services in your area, if needed.
Remember, everyone in the state of Indiana is a mandated reporter, and if you have a concern regarding child abuse or neglect, DO NOT WAIT and bring it to me or school staff. Call DCS and report the concern immediately!
Mandated Reporter-Indiana is a mandatory reporting state; anyone who suspects a child has been neglected or abused must by state law make a report.
Can the person making the report remain anonymous?
State law requires DCS to protect the identity of those reporting abuse or neglect allegations.
Failure to report can result in charges of child abuse or neglect.

Poor Attendance Is The Post-Pandemic Epidemic!
Students who are chronically absent are at higher risk of falling behind, scoring lower on standardized tests and even dropping out. And as often happens in education, students who struggle with attendance are also more likely to live in poverty, be children of color or have disabilities.
3 years since the pandemic wrecked attendance, kids still aren't showing up to school.
In a survey of 21 school districts in rural, suburban and urban areas, it was found that most districts still had heightened levels of chronic absenteeism.
Before the pandemic, about 8 million U.S. students were considered chronically absent (that's when a student misses 10% or more of the school year) By spring 2022, that number had doubled to around 16 million.
