I hope your 2016 is off to a great start. It's shaping up to be a good year; so far we have a graphic novelist as the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature and the return of The X-Files to television. Not bad 2016! (Admittedly, that last part might not be so relevant, though I do think a Weird Girl and What's His Name/The X-Files tie-in would be a fantastic program!)

On January 6, fifteen children's and school librarians met for one last discussion before casting their ballots for the 2016 RI Mock Newbery Award. After much debate and three rounds of voting, we had a winner: Most Dangerous: Daniel Ellsberg and the Secret History of the Vietnam War by Steve Sheinkin. The group also selected three honor books: Orbiting Jupiter by Gary D. Schmidt, The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Burbaker Bradley, and Echo by Pam Muñoz Ryan.

After the booking meeting, children's librarians will meet to discuss ideas for "On Your Mark, Get Set, ...Read!" We'll be joined by representatives from F.I.T. Club and Reach Out and Read to learn more about their programs and how reading and wellness are related. We'll also discuss ideas for summer programming, so come prepared to share!
