CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF 2024
Sargent Elementary Student's of the Quarter
Resolution for Moving 6th Grade to Middle School
0The Board of Education approved the Resolution for Moving 6th Grade to Middle School.
WHEREAS, pursuant to C.R.S. § 22-32-110(1)(l), the Board of Education (“Board”) of Sargent School District RE-33J (“School District”) has the power to determine which schools of the School District shall be operated and maintained; and
WHEREAS, because of declining enrollment, it has become increasingly challenging to recruit and retain highly qualified teachers and to offer diverse electives and extracurricular activities to School District students, particularly at the middle school level; and
WHEREAS, to address the effects of declining enrollment in the middle school, align with state standards directed to grades 6-8, and ensure that middle school student have more opportunities for high achievement and improved access to varied electives and extracurricular activities, the Board determines that it is in the best interests of the School District to move sixth grade from elementary school to middle school, commencing with the 2024-2025 school year; and
WHEREAS, the Board desires to delegate authority to the Superintendent to initiate the process for moving sixth grade to middle school, including without limitation, applying for a new school code in accordance with applicable law.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF EDUCATION OF SARGENT SCHOOL DISTRICT RE-33J THAT:
Approval. Beginning with the 2024-2025 school year, sixth grade shall move from elementary school to middle school.
Delegation of Authority. The Superintendent is hereby authorized to initiate the process for moving sixth grade to middle school, including without limitation applying for a new school code in accordance with applicable law. The Superintendent is further authorized to execute and deliver, for and on behalf of the Board, any and all additional documents and other papers and to perform all other acts that he may deem necessary or appropriate in order to implement and carry out the matters authorized by this Resolution.
Ratification. All actions heretofore taken by the Board, its officers, and agents, that were not inconsistent with the provisions of this Resolution are hereby ratified, approved and confirmed.
Severability. If any section, paragraph, clause or provision of this Resolution shall for any reason be held to be invalid or unenforceable, the invalidity or unenforceability of such section, paragraph, clause or provision shall not affect any of the remaining provisions of this Resolution.
Repealer of Measures. All acts, orders, resolutions or parts thereof, in conflict with this Resolution or with any of the documents hereby approved, are hereby repealed only to the extent of such conflict. This repealer shall not be construed as reviving any resolution, or part thereof heretofore repealed.
Effectiveness. This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon its passage.

The Board approved for the 2024-2025 school year teacher contract addendum for Sarah Schaller, Teacher Assistant, LaRae Mattive, and extra duty pay agreementsfor James Holmes, Junior High Athletic Director, Scott Consaul, Summer Open Gym Girls Basketball, Sami Cotten, Summer Open Gym Volleyball, Jon Medina, Summer Open Gym Football, and Sheldon Rockey, Summer Open Gym. The board accepted resignations from Sherry Warren, Secondary Administrative Assistant, Peter DelaCerda, Junior High English, Haley Summers, Junior High and High School Assistant Cross Country Coach, David Larson, Junior High Math Teacher and Junior High/High School Wrestling Coach, Taylor Lewis, High School Girls Basketball Assistant Coach, and Nathan Zimmerman, High School Assistant Swim Coach, Rebecca Quintana, Business Manager, and Valleen Bonsall, Food Service Director.
Jessica B. is Headed to National History Fair!
Jessica presented her history fair project to the Board of Education. She will be headed to National History Fair in Washington DC next month. Congratulations Jessica and good luck!

Board Policy
The board discussed policy BEDA-Notifications of Board Meetings for a first reading. They tabled the CASB Policy Overhaul Policy Section E- for a first reading, and CASB Special Policy Update until the next special meeting.
Other Items
The financial reports from April, minutes from 3-27-24 & 4-30-24 meetings, the statement of job requirements for a Teacher Assistant, and a part-time Gifted and Talented Teacher, Teacher Salary Schedule, and Teacher Assistant Salary Schedules were all approved. The board approved a month to month contract with RSF for business manager services. The Board also appointed Clay Kimberling to inform staff members about board discussions and action.
Discussion Items
The Board discussed the preliminary budget. Topics of discussion were the addition of $33,000 for water monitoring, $2,800 added for subscriptions and the addition of a part-time gifted and talented teacher to the budget. The board also discussed the strategic plan, Board Charge for 2024-2025, and June agenda items.

Congratulations to Ms. Darlene Pinales for being awarded Adams State University's Educator Highlight Award on May 23,2024. This is a monthly award that recognizes Adams State University School of Education alumni, prominent local teachers and other educators working within or hailing from the San Luis Valley.
