The Head-into-Summer-Fun Issue
June 6, 2025
Dear District 109 Families,
As we head into summer, I want to take a moment to thank you for your partnership and support. Whether your oldest child is an Early Learner or your youngest is heading to high school, I hope you take time to reflect on and celebrate their accomplishments as well as the role you’ve played in that growth.
This year, as a District, we’ve had community conversations on how to support children to adapt, struggle, and thrive in a changing world, and we moved from facility planning to referendum planning as we consider the future of our aging school buildings. Both of these important efforts will continue in the fall, and your voice will be essential. I am looking forward to those continued conversations. Please know this: We are listening carefully and commit to action based on what we hear.
I wish you and your family a summer filled with rest, joy, and connection.
Warm regards,
Michael V. Simeck
Superintendent of Schools
From the First Day to the Last
Here's to a great year – take a look at all the fun we've had together!
Moving On Up!
Earlier this week, our 8th grade students officially finished their time in District 109 and became high school students. With reflections from principals, the Superintendent and students themselves, and a warm welcome from Deerfield High School Principal Kathryn Anderson, the ceremonies were meaningful and joyful. You can watch the recordings of both Caruso and Shepard graduations on the District 109 YouTube channel.
Thank You Class of 2025 Retirees
This year, 11 District 109 staff members are moving to new adventures. All of them have left a lasting impact on students and families; they're forever part of DPS 109. Join us in thanking and celebrating them!
Referendum Task Force Last Meeting & Next Steps
At its third and final meeting, the Referendum Task Force took a deep dive into updated financial data, reviewed the escalating costs of inaction, and explored both renovation-only and new construction options to address District 109's aging facilities. Task Force members heard detailed presentations on tax impacts, long-term risks of continued emergency repairs, and the advantages and drawbacks of two major plans under consideration. The group also studied voter demographics and timing, public engagement plan and the contents of a proposed community survey aimed at testing support for a potential 2026 bond referendum.
Following the comprehensive presentations over three meetings, Task Force members took all they learned and engaged in thoughtful, candid conversations about the best strategies to address the District's facility needs. While there were varied perspectives, there was strong consensus that the District cannot afford to wait on addressing its facility needs. The Task Force ultimately recommended that the District share and seek public input on one clear proposal this fall—one that balances educational benefit, cost impact and likelihood of community support.
The Superintendent’s report at the June 17 Board of Education will outline the proposal, with more details shared in a presentation at the July 24 meeting.
Take the one-question survey before it closes Friday
If you haven't yet responded to the "Net Promoter Score" survey, please do so before 5pm on Friday, June 6.
A note about the "Exchange" part of the survey. Comments are automatically moderated by the ThoughtExchange system; any comments submitted with identifiable information must be reviewed before they are shared publicly. We do not ever allow comments with student or family names, and other than our superintendent, negative comments about individual staff members are filtered out. While we appreciate constructive criticism, any concerns about individual staff members should be handled in conversations with building or District leaders.

New Rules & Regulations for Motor-Driven Vehicles
Such as E-bikes and E-Scooters
The Village of Deerfield has enacted new regulations governing the use of motor-driven vehicles—such as electric scooters and motorized bikes—in response to a growing safety concern.
Under the ordinance, these vehicles are prohibited on sidewalks, bike paths, and other public property to protect pedestrians and reduce the risk of collisions. Additionally, riders must meet age and licensing requirements. These rules are designed to enhance public safety, promote responsible use and ensure that all users of public spaces—whether walking, cycling, or driving—can do so without
unnecessary risk.
Read more information about the new regulations, including age and license requirements and penalties.
