September 2024
Happy Almost Fall Y'All!
The weather has been great these past couple of weeks for our students to enjoy the outdoors. PE classes have been on the turf and tennis courts daily, and outdoor recess has been available for students to release their energy! In addition, students and teachers have been using our courtyard during classes for a change of scenery and alternate classroom settings. Our campus provides wonderful opportunities during the warmer months for a blend of indoor and outdoor experiences.
As I mentioned earlier this year, I am going to hold another Parent Zoom Session, focused on the Sapphire Grading portal. The objective of the training is for parents/guardians to understand how to review student's progress and understand the notes and coding within the system. This session will be held, Monday, September 23, from 5:30pm. For those that are able to attend, please register here for a link. For those that are unable to attend, I plan to record the session and share the recording for you to view at your convenience. My goal is to continue the partnership between school and home in order to support all students.
Our first annual Fall Paint night has been scheduled for Wednesday, October 30th. More information as well as sign ups will follow. We are super excited to have our families join us for this event. Registration will be capped at 100 people- so be sure to be on the look out for sign up information!
Have a great rest of your week- Thank you for all you continue to do to support our efforts here at BSMS!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Shelley
iReady Data
All students have completed their iReady diagnostics for the first benchmarking period. Students have had the ability to review their scores, reflect on their progress, and make goals. We encourage you to have conversations with your student about their iReady Data. Each student has a Google Sheet populated in their Google Drive that they can access that reports their latest testing data. Our next administration will be after Thanksgiving. This data is used to create WIN groupings to support students at their level, and is used by classroom teachers to differentiate instruction. Please reach out to your student's teacher if you have any questions or would like further clarification.
Grade Level Updates
Linked below are the updates from all grade levels, including their Creative Arts Classes.
PBIS Corner
We have had an absolutely phenomenal start to the year with our PBIS framework and the number of positive behaviors we are seeing in our students. It is so exciting to see the amount of wonderful things students are doing and positive traits they are showing in and out of the classroom. As of 9/17, the 19th day of school, we have recognized 1,695 positive behaviors from our students! How awesome!
Our staff is always looking for our RISE behaviors in our students consisting of Respect, Integrity, Self-Discipline, and Engagement. Our students have "RISEn" to the task of showing what it means to be a student at Bermudian Springs Middle School. We love to reinforce those positive behaviors through incentives. Some of our more popular rewards chosen by students are the opportunity to sit outside and eat lunch with friends, earn access to our ping pong tables and a free snack from the cafeteria.
As part of the PBIS framework, we track the discipline incidents each month to identify areas in which we can continue to support student behavior. We are proud to report that in nearly the first month of school we have only incurred 23 building incidents among over 550 students, which averages out to just about one incident per day. While the number of office incidents and referrals can fluctuate, it is refreshing to see such a low number to start the year. It shows a testament to our staff in outlining the expectations throughout the building and to our students in committing to "RISEing" like an Eagle day in and day out. Major kudos to our students and staff for kicking our PBIS framework off to an amazing start.
Eagle up Berm Middle!

8th Grade ELA Book Tasting
Mrs. Neil's ELA classes had fun with their first book tasting of the year to pick out their first class novel. A little candy made the day even sweeter!
7th/8th Grade Band Council
Each year, members of each band elect section leaders to serve on Band Council. Section leaders take section attendance in band, help members of their section with notes/rhythms/finger positions, help pick out concert music, and serve as ambassadors of the band program. This week, the 7/8 band members heard speeches from students interested in serving as section leaders. They voted via Google Form and chose their leadership for this year! Next week the 5/6 band will complete the same process.
Nurse's Memo
If your child requires medication for use at school, a parent-signed physician’s order is required. Please schedule a time with the school nurse to deliver medications and refills.
Students need to be free from vomiting, diarrhea, and have temperatures less than 100.5 F for 24-
hours before they return to school, without the use of fever-reducing medications such as Tylenol, ibuprofen, etc.
Please return the corrected emergency cards as soon as possible so the nurse may provide over-the-counter-medications as deemed approved by the parent/guardian.
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania requires 6th Grade Physicals/Immunization records and 7th Grade dental exams. These forms/records should be returned to the nurse before December 31, 2024.
The above required forms can be found at https://www.bermudian.org/services/health-services/health-forms

Attendance and Family Trip Procedures
Absences
Regular attendance at school is essential to maintain a good academic standing. Excused absences include: illness, family emergencies, prearranged doctor and dental appointments, and pre approved trips and school activities. Other absences are unexcused unless prior approval is given through the main office. Prior approval should be requested by the parent or guardian in writing prior to the day of absence. After three unexcused absences, a notice of Illegal Absences will be issued. After a 1st Notice of Illegal Absences has been issued, a parent meeting will be scheduled in a attempt to support the family and student with attendance. Future illegal absences may result in the school presenting the attendance issue before the local magistrate. This can be monitored in your Sapphire Parent Portal.
Tardies
This year we will again closely monitoring student tardiness. For each accumulation of 65 unexcused minutes, the student will receive what will equal to a 1/2 day unexcused absence.
Excuses
Please provide the school with written documentation for all tardies and absences. Absences will be marked as unexcused until an excuse is provided. Upon returning to school after an absence, students must report to the office with written documentation signed by their parent/guardian. All written excuses must be provided with five school days of the absence.
There are numerous options for providing an excuse/note for your students' absence(s). Any of the following are acceptable methods to submit this documentation. As always, if possible please provide medical documentation.
Complete the electronic form at this link English or Spanish
Email a note/excuse to Mrs. Clouser at kclouser@bermudian.org at the middle school.
Send in a written note/excuse directly to the office with the student.
Excused Family Trips
A total accumulation of 10 excused family trip days for the school year is the limit allowed per student. Any additional days will not be approved. Please provide a weeks notice prior to the trip.
This form is available to request permission for your child's absence from school to participate in an educational trip. All trips must have prior approval. Please fill this form out and submit to your child's building secretary/principal for approval.
