Public libraries invited to apply to host Thinking Money for Kids traveling exhibition
The American Library Association (ALA), in partnership with the FINRA Investor Education Foundation, invites public libraries to apply to be part of a national tour of the traveling exhibition Thinking Money for Kids.
Inspired by the success of the popular Thinking Money exhibit, Thinking Money for Kids is a new financial literacy experience for children ages 7 to 11, as well as their parents, caregivers and educators. The interactive exhibit will help children understand what money is, its function in society, money choices, and money values, such as fairness, responsibility and charitableness.
The exhibit will travel to 50 U.S. public libraries between 2019 and 2021. Applications will be accepted from Dec. 17, 2018, to Feb. 8, 2019. Read the full project guidelines and apply online.
Selected libraries will receive:
- the 1,000-square-foot traveling exhibition for a six-week loan
- a $1,000 programming allowance
- expenses paid for an orientation workshop at the 2019 ALA Annual Conference in Washington, D.C.
- programming resources and support
Participating libraries will be required to hold a minimum of four public programs related to the personal finance themes explored in the exhibition and fulfill other marketing and reporting requirements.
Reading Across RI 2019 Selection Announced
From the RI Center for the Book:
Reading Across Rhode Island, Rhode Island’s One Book, One State community read program kicks off its 17th year by encouraging everyone to read What the Eyes Don’t See by Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha with this year’s Honorary Chair, U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse. Reading Across Rhode Island is a program of the Rhode Island Center for the Book, made possible through a vibrant collaboration of librarians, teachers, book group leaders and readers from across the state. “As a voracious reader, I’m glad to join the Rhode Island Center for the Book to introduce the new Reading Across Rhode Island selection,” said U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse. “What the Eyes Don’t See holds timely lessons from the tragedy in Flint, Michigan about the importance of taking an active
About the Book:
“Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha’s memoir of uncovering elevated lead levels in Flint’s drinking water tells a fascinating story of corporate greed, grassroots activism, environmental racism, sexism in the sciences, and governmental coverup—not to mention the importance of the scientific method. But it’s not a dry science or economics book; this is at its heart a family memoir and medical thriller, written by a doctor who loves her job and feels a strong sense of duty to the people she serves. It made me furious and it made me hopeful, and I want everyone I know to read this book.”
