Community Input Needed: Statewide Kits for Youth Programming
OLIS and a small committee of youth services librarians are exploring the development of circulating kits available to youth services staff for facilitating programs for youth. These kits would be available upon request and would include enough materials to facilitate programming with groups of youth.
We are looking for input from our youth services community to identify which kit themes/materials would be most helpful in facilitating programming. In thinking about COVID recovery and a return to more in-person programming, consider what types of programming tools would most benefit your community and allow you to offer expanded learning opportunities.
Share your recommendations and thoughts by submitting the survey below.
Listed on the survey are examples of the types of kits that may be developed. Please select the types of kits you are most interested in and feel free to add anything you don't see listed by selecting "other." Keep in mind that the kits must focus on literacy/learning and materials solely for entertainment purposes cannot be considered.
All library staff responsible for developing and facilitating programs for youth are invited to submit this survey. This survey will be open through October 18.
OLIS Library Learning Center
The OLIS Library Learning Center provides asynchronous learning resources for RI library staff via Niche Academy. The Library Learning Center includes recordings of OLIS webinars and RI-specific training as well as curated webinars, courses and learning resources from state library agencies, library systems and other library serving organizations made available through the Niche Academy platform. OLIS staff are continually working to update the resources available in the Library Learning Center to meet the learning needs of RI library staff. If there is a specific training topic you would like to see, contact Nicolette Baffoni with your requests.
Visit the OLIS Library Learning Center to access learning resources. You will be prompted to sign in to this academy; library staff must have an account in order to access the OLIS Library Learning Center.
There are three ways to sign in/create an account:
- If you accessed the Ryan Dowd's Librarian's Guide to Homelessness course through OLIS in 2020, your account has been transferred to the OLIS Library Learning Center.
- You can create a free account using your library email address (must include your library's unique domain).
- Contact Nicolette Baffoni to create an account if you do not have a library-specific email address.

The Augusta Baker Storytelling Experience: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Programming for Children of all Ages
The series is named in honor of Augusta Braxton Baker, a beloved children’s librarian and storyteller who made South Carolina her home after a 37-year career at the New York Public Library.
In each kid-friendly session of the program, experts will talk about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at a level appropriate for children and their classroom teachers and caregivers. These 30-45 minute sessions will take place at 9 am on Tuesdays, and our audience will include children of all ages. Topics will include, but are not limited to anti-racism, LGBTQIA+ issues, rainbow families, gender issues, immigration and more. Zoom sessions will be live to allow for Q&A, but will be recorded to share with those who are unable to attend.
