Surfside Shark Bites
Week of March 3-7, 2025
No School Monday, March 10th!!!
A Note From Principal Frandsen
As we wrap up another exciting week at Surfside, I am thrilled to share the wonderful happenings at our school. From our elementary writing goals to the engaging MiraCosta hospitality course, and the inspiring visits to local colleges and tech schools, there is so much to celebrate!
On top of all that, we are excited to officially announce that Surfside High has been named a 2025 Model Continuation High School (MCHS) by the California Department of Education. After about 5 months of writing, a 1.5-day visit from the Model Schools Committee who visited all of S.E.A. and also interviewed six panels: teachers, classified staff, students, parents, district leadership, and community partners, we achieved this significant step as we continue to work towards our vision. This prestigious recognition demonstrates Surfside’s commitment to providing at-risk students with innovative academic programs. Only two schools in all of San Diego County and only seventy-four throughout the entire state of California have earned this outstanding recognition. Special thanks to those who participated on one of our panels.
I am incredibly proud of our dedicated staff and hardworking students who continue to excel in all their endeavors. Our sports teams are also gearing up for an exciting season, with our flag football team now in full swing and open to all high school students. For parents of students in our direct instruction school, please be reminded that the end of the quarter is just two weeks away. Let's ensure that all assignments are completed and everything is up to date for a successful end to the quarter. Wishing you all a fantastic weekend ahead filled with joy and relaxation!
Best wishes,
Principal Frandsen

These documents present information to help these families make decisions about how to apply for aid given unpredictable federal policies. New District Cell Phone Policy
"During the Day, Off and Away"
To create a focused learning environment and support student mental health, Oceanside Unified School District will now require all student cell phones to be off and stowed in backpacks upon entering campus and remain off until leaving. Exceptions are made for students with IEPs or 504 plans if specified for medical or anxiety-related needs, as determined by site administration. Classrooms have landlines for students to contact parents if needed, and students will have access to their phones during emergencies. The policy aims to reduce distractions, enhance engagement, and prevent cyberbullying, while also reducing the risk of phone theft or loss. Support and disciplinary actions for policy violations could include warnings, phone calls home, and phone confiscations, with increasing consequences for repeated offenses. OUSD is committed to student safety and mental health, fostering academic and emotional growth. For more details, refer to OUSD's Handbook.
