Post Falls Cross Country
The Post Falls Cross Country team has been making its presence known in North Idaho, Montana, Washington, and Oregon this season!
Community service: During their annual team camp to begin the season Post Falls High School Cross Country team of 28 runners, two coaches, and parent chaperone Jamie Misner spent just over an hour cleaning up old plastic tree netting from an area of about 5+ acres in Farragut State Park. They completed over 40 hours of work in less than two hours. Many of the runners and coaches were stung by wasps hiding in the ground, but they persevered through and still had tons of fun.
Post Falls River Run: The Trojans hosted the first meet of the cross country season this year, and it was a great success. Post Falls runners that earned medals included Kaylynn Misner (1st place), Talia Bonville (4th), and Josiah Wells (5th). The coaches received lots of compliments about the meet, and they couldn’t have done it without the help of all of the volunteers from the team and the community.
After this first week of competition, Kaylynn Misner was selected as the female IHSAA Athlete of the Week for the week of August 19-25th.
Libby Invitational: Post Falls senior Kaylynn Misner won the girls race at the Libby Invitational, finishing in 18 minutes, 31.13 seconds, while junior Talia Bonville was fourth, helping the Trojans to a third-place finish, and only a couple points away from taking first. Misner’s time from this race has her ranked 5th in the 6A for Idaho so far this season.
Three Course Challenge in Seaside, OR: Both of the Trojan XC teams brought home plaques from the Three Course Challenge in Oregon. The girls team was 3rd, and the boys team was 4th. The course was very challenging with tough hills and mud pits to run through. Senior Kaylynn Misner earned an individual medal with a 3rd place finish, and freshman Dorothy Pope earned a medal in her race with a 9th place finish. Some highlights from the trip included going to the beach, seeing a live moon jelly and crab, staying in the military barracks, and racing through the huge mud pit. The best highlight for the coaches was when the meet director complimented them for having the most polite and respectful kids they have ever met!
Hawk Invite: The Trojans had three runners race in Walla Walla at the Hawk invite. Two of those runners placed 2nd overall in the varsity races. Austin Averette was 2nd in the varsity boys race with a time of 16:29 and Angelique Averette was 2nd in the varsity girls race with 20:58. Quincy Invite: Austin Averette was 2nd overall at the Quincy invitational on September 12th.
The Trojan Cross Country runners look to keep the momentum going this season as they move into championship racing in October. Come cheer on the Trojans at Farragut State Park on October 24th at the District Championships, where they compete to qualify for the State meet that will take place November 2nd.

Patriot Day with Life Skills
The Life Skills Class watched a short clip regarding 9-11 to learn about what happened on the day. After watching the short clip each student was given a square or two to color then a giant work of art was created and assembled into the classroom.
Seniors working on Citizenship in Government
The senior Government classes spent some time last week finding ways to improve themselves and becoming better citizens. They were asked to go out into the community and do something or learn something that improves themselves. They chose to go to museums, attend meetings, volunteer, watch a documentary or listen to a podcast. The seniors created short presentations to share with their classmates on what they did.
The seniors were asked to reflect on what makes a good citizens, also do we have a lack of citizenship in our country. Here are a couple responses:
"I do believe American citizens are failing to do the little that they are asked to do. While millions of people have laid their life on the line and many who have died to keep us safe and free, many fail to even cast a vote for who should run our country."
"What does it take to be a good citizen? In my opinion, being a “good” citizen is acquired by continuously completing two tasks. These are, being a contributing member of society; whether you interpret this as being through economically contributing or contributing with knowledge, I believe it is important to contribute in some shape or form. The next thing is to be kind to others, going out of your way to bring someone else, whether it is as small as a compliment or holding the door open for someone, I feel that adding a little bit of kindness to your interactions is crucial to be considered a “good” citizen."

Welcome Back Foods and Nutrition to PFHS
After a ten year hiatus, Nicole Hessa is bringing back Foods and Nutrition to PFHS. "Hessa" comes to us from Sioux Falls, SD but is a Kellogg High School graduate. She has 10 years in the restaurant industry and this is her fourth year teaching, but first year at PF.
There are 3 Foods and Nutrition classes offered.
F&N I will teach students basic recipe reading, correct measurement techniques, knife cutting safety, understanding nutrition and how to cook simple recipes such as: omelettes, alfredo, cupcakes, biscuits, pancakes, and more advanced things like stir fry and Chick-fil-A nuggets (with sauce of course!).
F&N II will bring variety and culture to students as they explore food around the world and discover new ways to cook kitchen staple ingredients.
F&N III will be geared to students who desire a career in the restaurant industry or catering field (details to come at a later date).
Attached you'll see students measuring flour to cook playdough for their knife cutting practice and student's near-perfect omelettes.
Ms. Wemhoff, Ms. Ramsbacher, and Mrs. Poelstra's Collaborative Art Installation
The art classes each created a series of drawings about themselves. Once they completed these, they fit them together to create a collaborative art installation. The students displayed this during Homecoming week to show unity and school spirit.
Effects of Social Media
Social media has given us a platform to connect with the world. We keep up with friends and relatives, learn about different cultures and ideas, and share our thoughts with a broad audience. While there are several benefits to social media, it can also be harmful to our community.
Social media can distract our students, disrupt their sleep, expose them to unrealistic beauty standards, bullying, and rumor-spreading. The more we educate ourselves on warning signs and how to monitor students, the better we can help prevent them from these adverse effects.
There are healthy ways to find a balance with social media and mitigate the related risks. Here are a few tips on how to protect students:
Set boundaries. Ensure your student has a phone use routine, so their phone does not interfere with their sleep, homework, or other responsibilities.
Have open discussions. Ask your child why they are using social media and ask if they understand its risks. Ask them how social media makes them feel and have a plan if they start to have negative emotions associated with their use.
Teach social media etiquette. Discuss appropriate behavior on social media. Ensure they carry their core morals on how to treat others as they interact with others virtually.
Set social media rules. For example, making their account private, not allowing them to accept friend requests from strangers, and having restrictions on what type of content they are allowed to post, consume, and share.
