This Week @ PS 88Q
March 10 2024
A Message From Mrs. O'Shaughnessy
I hope everyone had a wonderful week. As we enter the last semester of the 2023-2024 school year, you can see how far your child has come. It truly is one of the best things about working in an elementary school, watching our students progress, mature and thrive. This week you had the opportunity to meet with your child's teachers. These last few months are so vital to each child's success.
For our third, fourth and fifth graders, they will also be taking the NYS ELA and NYS Math test. These tests are simply one measure, not every measure of their progress. Our teachers prepare our students all year to be successful, through authentic instruction, hands on learning, critical thinking skills, self regulation, executive functioning skills and time management. This is not something we "cram" the last few weeks before the test. I felt as a mother, as a teacher and as a leader, that quality instruction all year is the best preparation for assessments. Test anxiety is real, and mostly from the pressure that is put on students from external sources (families, schools). This is what we do not want.
Our students did amazing last year, as PS 88Q had the highest proficiency levels that they have ever had. This is due to our amazing teachers, who create learning environments where our children get what they need to succeed. They know their students.
Our students in grades 3, 4 and 5 did so well because of the solid foundation they receive from their Prek, K, 1 and 2 teachers. The Chancellors initiative "NYC Reads" emphasizes every third grader is a fluent reader. This is the work, and it is done in those early grades.
Testing dates are as follows:
NYS ELA: April 11 and April 12. (Grade 3 and 4 Paper Based/Grade 5 Computer Based)
NYS Math: May 7 and May 8 (Grade 3 and 4 Paper Based/Grade 5 Computer Based)
NYS Science: Grade 5 ONLY May 15
Have a great week!

Grade 5 News
Our grade 5 students are entering their last semester at PS 88Q! Such a bittersweet statement, as for some, they have been with us since Pre-K. Seven years of walking through the doors of PS 88Q, their home away from home. We are so proud of our students, and know that in a few short months, they will begin their middle school journey.
Here are some updates on dates for Senior Activities:
March 12: Grade 5 trip to A10 College Basketball Tournament at the Barclay Center (no fee to families)
June 18th: Senior Yearbooks, Senior T-Shirt and Senior Breakfast (no fee to families)
June 20th: Graduation
June 21st: Senior Dance (supported by PS 88Q and PS 88q PTA/no fee to families)
I have shared a survey with our grade 5 committee, and I wanted to share the link with you all as well, the families of our grade 5 students. Please complete the survey, we want to hear your thoughts. For example, some of our committee would like a senior trip, perhaps to Medieval Times, or other places. These trips and the coach buses would have a fee.
Town Hall Meeting: March 12
Summer Rising Application Opens Monday March 4
New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) is looking forward to partnering with the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) once again for Summer Rising 2024. Summer Rising connects elementary and middle school students to fun, culturally relevant, and hands-on experiences that strengthen their academic, social, and emotional skills. Summer Rising is free, and open to any NYC student currently in kindergarten through grade 8.
Grades K–5:
- The program will run from July 2, 2024 to August 16, 2024, and will run Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
We will be sharing your creation code as soon as they are sent to us.
Ya Gotta Read
Ms. Corniel is heading up an amazing initiative and wonderful opportunity! Our students have already began and are doing AMAZING!
The Mets launched “Ya Gotta Read!” in 2017 to foster a love of reading in students. The more children read, the more they succeed in school. It’s also linked to expanded knowledge and vocabulary, improved attention span and memory and increased curiosity and imagination.
Thanks to a partnership with the Amazin’ Mets Foundation and Delta Air Lines, the program has expanded to impact a total of approx. 50,000 students at 34 elementary schools in Queens and Brooklyn.
For the 2024 edition of Ya Gotta Read!, the Mets and Delta are challenging students to read for 20 minutes every school night for six weeks, coinciding with Mets Spring Training. The more minutes students read, the more Mets prizes they earn.
Students who read for 60 minutes hit a single, and win a Mets eraser set. Reading for 180 minutes is a double and gets students a color-in notebook. Reading for 300 minutes counts as a triple and earns students a jersey drawstring backpack. Finally, reading for 600 minutes means students hit a home run and win a pair of Mets tickets.
In addition, the student at each school who reads the most will win four Field Level tickets to a Mets game, be honored on the Jumbotron at Citi Field and receive a $100 Citi Field Gift Card!
The class at each school that reads the most will win special Mets bucket hats!

A Message From Our Chancellor
Dear New Yorkers,
Today we are wrapping up Career Discovery Week, when 3,000-plus high school students visit dozens of employers to learn firsthand about the world of work. On Monday, alongside our co-organizers at the Partnership for New York City, I spoke with students from Aviation High School and MESA Charter High School, who toured a JetBlue airplane at JFK Airport—and met Aviation alumni who now work at JetBlue!
As employers across the city connect with our talented NYCPS students, it feels like the perfect time to do some recruiting of my own. I’m excited to let you know that our New Teacher Application for the 2024–25 school year is now live, open to anyone who currently holds New York State teacher certification or is on track to be certified by September. (To our current high school students, especially those in our FutureReadyNYC education pathway, please keep us in mind a few years down the road!)
Here's how you can help us spread the word about this opportunity:
- Refer a NY State-certified teacher (and for aspiring teachers, share this flyer and sign-up link so they can learn more about pathways to certification)
- Post this image and flyer on your social media
- Follow our teacher recruitment team on Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn
Candidates should check our website for a range of helpful resources, including an application guide, info sessions, and our online support center. Plus, they can learn more about our $1,000 early commitment stipend, available to eligible candidates in key certification areas (like math, science, bilingual education, special education, career and technical education, and more) who accept a position in specific districts by June 15.
We’re eager to welcome our newest teachers to the NYCPS community—a community that is over 75,000 educators strong. So I'm asking you to take a moment and brainstorm. Do you know any seasoned or soon-to-be teachers? Are they passionate and committed? Could they make an impact in our classrooms?
If so, please pass along this message. We’re building bright starts and bold futures at NYCPS—and we’re hiring!
Soaring high,
David C. Banks
