SENIOR SPOTLIGHT
TWO SENIOR SPOTLIGHTS ARE IN THIS NEWSLETTER SINCE LAST WEEKS' NEWSLETTER WAS NOT PUBLISHED
by Caia Englert
For week-ending April 5
We hope everyone had a great break. This week we’ll be looking at 2 co-op students in Collision Repair - Cameron DeShone and Jordin Ziegier. When asked why they joined, both boys expressed their intense interest in hands-on work. Cameron noted that he loves to move and feel like he’s fixing things, while Jordin said he joined and excels at his tech program purely out of desire to learn a trade, and the honor that comes along with it. Cameron, a few years ago, wrecked his truck, then wanted to fix it, inspiring his choice to join Collision Repair. He cited that his favorite color to paint cars is red, because they look sleek and cool. Jordin always aspired to have a practical, unique skill set he could use to make a living. He loves detailed work and examining cars up close.
After graduating from Tech, Cameron will continue to work, applying his education at D& D Collision in Montgomery County. Jordin would also like to continue to work at his pre-established co-op job for a year or so, before starting up his own business in the long run.
Cameron vacuums out a car the shop just finished up repairing.
For week-ending April 12
In this week’s Senior Spotlight, we were lucky enough to talk to 4 phenomenal Biomedical Science students!
Yariallis Machado is an incredible senior from Pottsgrove High. She always wanted to pursue being a nurse, and thought that this program would be a great way to get her foot in the door early. She enjoys working with mannequins, doing labs, and is incredible at memorizing medical terminology. After graduation, she’s going to Alvernia University in Reading, PA for nursing. She gave some advice: Surrounding yourself with other hardworking, driven people can really motivate you.
Sarah Quiñones is an outstanding student from Upper-Perkiomen. She joined Intro to Medical Careers in ninth grade. In tenth she tried out the Health Science Technology course, before she realized Biomed was more in line with her interests and she transferred over. She loves the dissections done in Biomed, including dissecting a sheep heart! She said the lab equipment is the same kind that real professionals use, which keeps the program exciting and practical. Sarah is also exceptional in her extracurriculars, she’s the President of the National Honors Society, and also the President of HOSA! Outside of school, she likes playing tennis and volunteering. After graduation, she’s committed to the University of Central Florida Honors College.
Maissa Hamoudi is an exceptional student from Spring-Ford High. She wanted to work with medicine, specifically pediatric care. She said that the most valuable skill this program has taught her has been the merits of teamwork. She really enjoys collaborating with her classmates to solve complex challenges Biomedical Sciences can sometimes present. Outside of school, she works at Target, and enjoys hanging out with friends. After graduation, she’s committed to Penn State for Pre-Med.
Angelica Bou is another amazing Pottsgrove student. She joined tech because she always wanted hands-on experience in the medical field. She said one of her favorite parts of the program has been shadowing at hospitals. She’s shadowed in the ER, the OR, and in Pharmacy work. In her free time, Angelica likes to edit and dabble in graphic design work and play tennis. After graduation, she’s set to go to Jefferson for Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Congratulations to all of these seniors for their passionate, marvelous work they have done in their time at tech!
Pictured below, Maissa and Angelica are working on the state-of-the-art digital table in the Biomedical lab. This can help students examine anatomy quickly and easily.

If you've lost something, check it out!
From the Nurse's Office
If a student tests positive for COVID the CDC, as well as WMCTC, recommends staying home for 5 days after your symptom start date. Your symptom start date is considered day zero. If symptoms improve by day 5 and you are fever free for 24 hours with no fever reducing medications you may return to school on day 6 (ex: symptoms start on 9/1, isolate from, 9/1 through 9/6, may return to school on 9/7 if above criteria are met).
Please let the WMCTC nurse (DDavison@WesternCenter.org) as well as WMCTC attendance (attendance@westerncenter.org) know the student is positive and will be out.
If a household family member tests positive for COVID but the student is completely symptom free, the student may come to school.
**********************************************************************************************
When a student isn't feeling well, he/she needs to visit the nurse for consultation. If a student contacts their parents without seeing the nurse, the student will still need to see Ms. Davison before dismissal.
FROM THE GUIDANCE OFFICE
SOAR Credit Opportunity
Seniors need to have 3 things in place to be awarded SOAR credits.
-Score overall Competent or Advanced on NOCTI testing
-Have a final cumulative GPA of 2.75 in your technical area
-Have a completed task list with all tasks marked at proficiency level
(SOAR does not include Cosmetology and Sports Medicine programs).
Students meeting these requirements will be mailed home all paperwork needed for SOAR credits. These credits are good for 16 months after graduation. Students refer to collegetransfer.net for participating schools.
What if I do not qualify for SOAR or my school is not connected to SOAR?
Take anything you have completed/earned from WMCTC (Certifications/NOCTI results/task list) to your school of interest. See if they will award any advance credit or allow you to test out of class. BE YOUR OWN ADVOCATE.
