PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Hello CV Family,
We appreciate those of you able to attend the Open House/Curriculum Night last week. It was another nice evening for our staff, students, and parents. Over the past week, I have had conversations with our students, staff, and parents. While I discussed various topics, one that came up had me curious and a little concerned. I heard that we were going to a new grading system. I was asked if we were going to Standards-Based Grading. I heard we were only going to test students, and nothing else would count as part of their grades. I also heard that we weren’t going to count classwork. So, I began asking questions and listening to seek to understand.
What we are doing is not what is perceived, but perception can be a reality. I now have a better understanding of how these perceptions came about. In short, we are implementing a new instructional model, not a new grading system. It is new only in that we put some teacher jargon on a process we have been working towards for the past few years and gave it a name. We made a grading adjustment in teacher grade books as part of the final phase of our alignment with GPS Grading Beliefs and Practices, which was adopted in 2022 and is supposed to be fully implemented this year. We have been implementing it in phases and met the expectation of fully aligning with the established timeline.
I have recently had conversations with 200 students, various teachers, and some fantastic parents. They helped shed light on where the misconceptions sprouted. I have shared the reality of what is happening and its history when I spoke to parents and students. I cannot duplicate the depths of those conversations in a newsletter, but I can put something together to hopefully duplicate the outcome of my conversations. I still want to visit with more students, parents, and teachers, but I can assemble something for you late next week. I will send it to all of our parents and staff through email. If you are interested in asking me a question that you would like me to answer, please email me.
Let me reassure you that we do what is best for students. We prioritize student needs and put students first. Our decisions regarding the instructional model and the last phase of implementing the GPS Grading Beliefs and Practices support students' success.
Typically, I will highlight important information that is contained within the newsletter or information I want to personally share with our school community in the format of Three Dots from Mr. Dumas:
Progress Reports Due August 30th: Student progress reports through Infinite Campus will be finalized on 8/30. As happens each year at this time, we have concerns about grades, grade books, teaching, learning, etc. It is still very early in the school year. Teachers are advised to spend the first part of the year building a rapport with students and creating a classroom environment and procedures that make for a successful year. Sometimes, that process can take a few weeks. Overall, the sample size in almost all of our grade books is very small to get an accurate picture of student progress. I always recommend looking at the progress report to get the best idea of how your student is progressing. The halfway point is two weeks away. Give the processes and opportunities for learning to grow up until that point. Although, it is always a good idea to reach out if you have any questions or need clarification on anything with your student’s teacher.
Time to Be Honest: I know what I just told you about grade books, but I am in them all the time at this time of year too. This past week I have gone through them twice to look for patterns and trends in specific classes and trends in general. We frequently compare historical data to see if there are differences, gaps, and anything in general that stands out to us. I will continue to monitor to see that our grade books are up to date, as will our administrative team. There are a few teachers who have communicated with me that they are putting in grades very soon, but that they were working on a specific project or objective, and putting in grades would be incomplete and misleading. I completely understand that point of view, and I appreciate that they can articulate it. I do ask them to communicate at home if that is the case. Grades cause a great deal of anxiety for many of our students, and our ability to update them promptly and accurately is of the utmost importance.
Reaching Out to Mr. Dumas: Our team is always available, and in most cases, the counselor or your student’s grade level administrator will best be able to assist you. On the other hand, I want to be connected to our community and students. If you ever have questions, please reach out.
Remember, we are here to support your child's academic journey. We appreciate your continued support and look forward to working together to ensure their success!
Best regards,
Mr. Tyler Dumas

Gilbert PD Advisory: Senior Assassins Game
The Senior Assassins game has started up again this school year. Senior Assassins is a game played by students across different schools where the goal is to “eliminate” other players by shooting them with water guns. This game is often played for months at a time and can involve large groups of students.
One important thing to note is that this game is not sanctioned by any schools or districts in Gilbert.
Important Reminders for Parents:
- Ensure water guns do not resemble realistic firearms.
- Know your teen’s whereabouts and who they are with.
- Ensure students avoid private property and business parking lots.
- Discuss the potential dangers of this game with your teen and how the game may be perceived by others who are unaware of what this game is.
Please complete the Annual Update for 2024-2025
The Annual Update helps us help you. Keeping your information current allows for better communication between you and the school. Even if your information has not changed we still need you to complete the update. Please go to the Annual Update Link and verify your demographic information is correct. If a student has multiple households, each household should verify their own information. The update is better accessed via a computer versus a cell phone.
Other important items to verify in your Annual Update include:
Emergency Contacts
Media Opt-out
Medical Permissions (i.e. ibuprofen/acetaminophen)
Court Documents
Diplomas (a misspelled name will delay the printing of your student's diploma)
It is imperative that you complete your Annual Update each year as some of the information expires at the end of each school year.
If you are experiencing technical difficulties logging into Infinite Campus or updating your account, feel free to call the front office or stop in at the front desk and one of us would love to help you.

However, to utilize this option moving forward, all of our students will need to create a free Parchment account. While the account is free, there is a charge if the request is for an official transcript and is paid by the student at the time of ordering.
Parchment uses the highest security standards and the service complies with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). This service is available from approximately 12 a.m. to 11 p.m. Pacific Time.
Please check your student's email inbox for the invite to create your Parchment account.
Library
LIBRARY:
The CVHS Summer Reading Program completed its second summer in existence and it went really well! 27 students participated and those students read 347 books! All have earned prizes and the top two (Kiera Mills and Aubrey Steffen) earned a free ticket to HOCO. Be on the lookout for the program next summer.
FYI: The library is open daily for students. The space is perfect for students to work on homework, study, check out books, and print assignments. Students are welcome in the library during the lunch hours, before school, and after school.
Chromebook Information:
If a student is having problems with his/her Chromebook, the place to go is the library. We will put it in for repair and give the student a loaner Chromebook until the original is fixed. Most problems are a simple fix and don’t involve a fee or use of insurance.
Also, We recommend reading the Student Device Handbook. And please look at the details of the Device Protection Plan. If you would like to purchase it, or check to see if it rolled over this year for your student, utilize these directions.
Digital Citizenship:
Campo Verde continues to be a certified Common Sense SCHOOL. We train our teachers in digital citizenship and throughout every school year we teach our students various lessons during Coyote Time. We pride ourselves in knowing that every digital citizenship lesson we do helps our students on their path to being responsible digital citizens! We will also be providing information in this section of the newsletter to help parents navigate various digital topics related to their teens.
Additional Things to Know:
Gilbert Sister Cities
Parents,
Does your junior want to travel the world this summer?
The 2025 Gilbert Sister Cities Youth Ambassador Program is the program for them! Gilbert Sister Cities is a nonprofit that offers juniors in Gilbert a chance to host an exchange student in their home and travel for free to either of our sister cities in China or Northern Ireland. In addition to providing an opportunity for students to visit Leshan, China, or Antrim-Newtownabbey, Northern Ireland, for free next summer, the 2025 Youth Ambassador Program will include workshops for essay writing, fundraising, interviewing, and networking. Taught by local business leaders, these clinics will help participants develop skills that will help them with college admissions, scholarship applications and interviews, job interviews, and in the workforce. Participants will have a variety of occasions to practice what they have learned during group and individual interviews, social events, and fundraisers. Our first informational meeting is on September 12 at the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce, and we would love to see you and your student there! In the meantime, please visit our website gilbertsistercities.org, and visit our Facebook and Instagram @gilbertsistercities for more information. If you have any questions, please email lori.schuermann@gilbertsistercities.com.
