With Gratitude and Pride, Bidding Farewell to Thompson School District
Dear Thompson School District Community,
Nearly seven years ago, I had the privilege of joining this incredible school district as your superintendent. At that same time, my family and I made Thompson our home—my daughter began sixth grade at one of our outstanding schools, and shortly thereafter, my wife joined the district as an elementary school counselor. From the very beginning, we immersed ourselves fully into this community, both personally and professionally. It has truly been an honor to serve alongside such dedicated educators, passionate families, and inspiring students.
As I reflect on these past seven years, I have such pride and gratitude. Our school district has grown stronger, more innovative, and more connected than ever before. Together, we have built a culture that values excellence, equity, and opportunity for every learner. We have also seen consistent growth in student achievement and graduation rates, and we have made significant strides in expanding post-secondary pathways, job readiness, and real-world learning.
We have celebrated major milestones—passing a Bond and Mill Levy Override, opening new schools, launching a thriving Early Childhood Center, and establishing the Thompson Career Campus as a beacon of career and technical education across the region. These accomplishments are not just milestones, they are the result of hard work, collaboration, and a shared belief in the boundless potential of our students.
To the Thompson community: Thank you. Your steadfast support, engagement, and belief in public education have been instrumental in our collective success. Whether you are a parent, volunteer, business partner, or community advocate, your commitment to our schools has made a profound difference. I am deeply grateful to be part of such a generous and forward-thinking community.
To our incredible staff: Bravo! Your unwavering dedication, creativity, and compassion are the heart of this district. You show up every day to support, inspire, and uplift our students, often in ways that go unseen but never unappreciated. Whether in the classroom, in support roles, or in leadership, you have been instrumental in shaping a culture where all students can thrive. I am truly in awe of your resilience and your commitment to excellence in everything you do.
And to our students: You are the reason we do this work, and you continue to inspire me daily. You have faced challenges with courage, pursued your passions with enthusiasm, and achieved so much in academics, athletics, the arts, leadership, and service. Watching you grow, overcome, and succeed has been one of the greatest joys of my career. You give me hope for the future, and I couldn’t be more proud of each and every one of you.
This role has been so much more than a job; it has been one of the most meaningful chapters of my life. I will carry the memories, relationships, and experiences with me always.
As I prepare to step away from this position, please know that I remain your biggest supporter. Thompson School District has a bright future ahead, and I am excited to see where your continued dedication, vision, and heart will take you next.
Thank you for the trust, the partnership, and the opportunity to serve as your superintendent.
Dr. Marc Schaffer

Three TSD Elementary Schools Capture State Academic Achievement Awards
The State of Colorado’s Department of Education formally presented academic achievement awards to three Thompson School District schools. The awards were earned as a result of student assessments completed last year. Administered each spring, the State of Colorado’s assessment program is a standards-based process designed to measure student performance at schools throughout the state.
Awards presented to district schools include:
Berthoud Elementary School and Coyote Ridge Elementary, an IB World School
2024 John Irwin Schools of Excellence Award
Named after former Colorado State Representative John J. Irwin, these awards are given to schools that demonstrate exceptional academic achievement over time. To capture this award, each school received an “Exceeds Expectations” rating on the Academic Achievement indicator of the School Performance Frameworks, reflecting exceptional performance in Math, English Language Arts, and Science.
2024 Governor's Distinguished Improvement Award
The Governor’s Distinguished Improvement Awards are given to schools that demonstrate exceptional student growth. On the school performance framework that is used by the state, these schools "exceed" expectations on the indicator related to longitudinal academic growth at all grade levels.
“We’re thrilled to celebrate our schools for earning these state academic achievement awards,” said Thompson School District superintendent Dr. Marc Schaffer. “This recognition is a tribute to the hard work, dedication, and excellence of our students, families, educators, and staff. The commitment to academic success throughout our entire school district continues to inspire.”

TSD Announces Winners of the 2025 Thompson Youth Make a Difference Contest
Thompson School District is pleased to announce the winners of this year's Thompson Youth Make a Difference Contest, which recognizes students who are making a positive difference in their community. A special thank you goes out to all of the students who submitted applications in this year's contest. Each winner will receive $300 in supplies as well as assistance connecting to businesses and organizations to help make their plans a reality. More information on their projects will be released as they are completed. You can also check out this video about one of the past winners from Coyote Ridge Elementary School. https://youtu.be/I-v0lTriCek
K-5th Grade Winners:
Quinn Baken and Kinsley Schmidt – 4th Grade
Winona Elementary School
Quinn Baken and Kinsley Schmidt noticed that many books are torn and worn out in the Winona Elementary School reading room. Additionally, they saw that newly published reading materials and advanced chapter books are not available either. So they decided to lead a project with their classmates that will update and improve the reading room because they understand the importance of literacy. This will include reorganizing and cleaning the reading room to create a welcoming atmosphere. Their goal is to inspire and encourage all students to read.
“I really like to read and I think it would really help out other kids to like reading more
too.” – Quinn Baken
“I love reading. It’s like a movie, but better. You learn new things and new words.” – Kinsley Schmidt
6th -12th Grade Winner
Lucca Legendre – 9th Grade
Mountain View High School
Often skin care is overlooked and not seen as a significant part of health care, but not to teenager Lucca Legendre. She understands how it affects both the well-being and confidence of individuals, particularly those with specific dermatological needs in low-income and disadvantaged communities. Through partnerships with dermatologists, skin care companies, and local community centers, she plans to coordinate a skincare event for underserved populations that would provide access to products as well as education about skin care. This will be her first step toward her commitment to pursuing a career as a dermatologist and helping reduce disparities in skincare accessibility.
“I believe everyone deserves to feel comfortable and confident in their own skin.” - Lucca Legendre
We hope you will join us in celebrating the winners of this year's contest!
Busy School Year Ends, Summer Work Begins for Operations
As the school year comes to a close, we’re proud to celebrate a year of smooth and efficient operations that helped create and maintain environments where students and staff could thrive. From transportation, athletics, and facilities to security and nutrition services, our team worked tirelessly behind the scenes to keep everything running seamlessly.
Throughout the summer months, the operations team will address critical maintenance items on site in buildings, as well as maintain our acres of landscaping. Construction projects continue, including the two largest: TCC classroom expansion and ball field upgrades at Loveland High. The continuous efforts to upgrade systems and processes for school readiness take all summer.
In addition to the more substantial projects, Operations staff is also busy throughout the summer months taking advantage of our empty buildings to tackle the smaller work, such as polishing floors, deep cleaning classrooms and desks as well as performing inside building maintenance.
Thank you to everyone who played a role in making this year a success—we are already looking ahead to an even stronger start next year!

Access your student’s CMAS score reports through CDE Family Portal in June
We are so proud of how much our students have learned and grown this school year!
In April, students had the opportunity to showcase their learning and skills on the Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) tests, and they did an amazing job!
We’re excited to share that your child’s preliminary CMAS performance report will be available online on June 11 through the CDE Family Portal. This new, secure platform provides an easy way to view important information about your child’s academic progress based on the only assessments given to all Colorado students that measure what students should know and be able to do at the end of each grade.
Here’s How You Can Access Your Child's CMAS Report
Visit the CDE Family Portal: https://familyportal.pearson.com/CO
You’ll need the following information to log in:
Student’s State ID (SASID) – This is found at the top of your child's CMAS score report from last year. You can also find your Student’s State ID on your Student’s Profile page within your TSD Parent Portal.
Student’s Legal Last Name
Student’s Legal First Name
Student’s Date of Birth
What You’ll Find in the Report
The preliminary report will include your child's score and performance level. Later in June, a final report will be available with additional details, including:
A breakdown of strengths and areas for growth
Comparisons of your child's performance to their peers at the school, district, and state levels
Tips for supporting your child’s learning at home
Helpful resources like a video guide and a detailed explanation document will also be available in the Family Portal to assist you in understanding the results.
CMAS Scores Are One Piece of the Puzzle
CMAS scores provide valuable insights about your child’s academic journey based on Colorado’s grade-level expectations. We encourage you to view them alongside classroom grades and teacher feedback for a more complete picture of your child’s progress. Please take a few minutes to review your child’s results and celebrate their hard work!

Inspire Kids to Read Over the Summer
Summer Reading: Reading during the summer is one of the best ways to help your child stay sharp and ready for the next school year. Just like playing sports keeps their bodies active, reading keeps their minds growing. It builds vocabulary, strengthens comprehension, and helps kids become more confident learners. Even a few minutes of reading each day can make a big difference. Plus, when kids read for fun, whether it is a book, magazine, or comic, they often discover new interests and hobbies along the way.
Here are some fun ways to inspire summer reading at home:
Visit the local library and let your child pick out books or comics that interest them.
Set up a cozy reading spot at home and enjoy reading together, even if it is just for 15 minutes a day.
Try a reading challenge or bingo sheet. Kids enjoy crossing things off as they go.
Listen to audiobooks on road trips or during quiet time.
Connect books to real life by reading about animals before visiting the zoo or exploring a cookbook together and trying a new recipe.
Encouraging a love of reading during the summer helps kids grow as learners and creates wonderful family memories.
