JAMS Weekly Update
September 2, 2024
Dear JAMS Families/Estimadas Familias de JAMS
September is Attendance Awareness Month, and we’re excited to partner with you to ensure our students are present and thriving every day. At John Adams Middle School, we currently have an 18.8% chronic absenteeism rate, meaning some students are missing 10% or more of school days in a year. That’s just two days a month, but those absences can add up quickly. Together, we can work to reduce this number and ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed.
We understand that sometimes barriers make it difficult for students to attend school consistently. Whether your child is dealing with school refusal, anxiety, peer issues, or other challenges, we are here to help. We have a variety of resources and supports available and are committed to working with you to address any issues that may be preventing your child from coming to school.
Additionally, if a student chronically misses the AM period, families will be notified. Frequent absences in the morning put students at risk of losing their elective class, as consistent attendance is crucial for success across all subjects.
It will take all of us—families, teachers, staff, and students—working together to tackle this challenge. But by partnering with one another, I believe we can reduce absenteeism and help our students reach their fullest potential.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to our school counselors or administrators if your child needs support. Let’s make this school year a success, one day at a time.
Thank you for your continued partnership,

Title I Presentation/Presentación de título I
Please review the Title I presentation and fill out the Free/Reduced meal application. We want to make sure that we keep our Title I funding and remain a School Wide Program.
Free and Reduced Meal Application
I am asking all parents to please complete the Free and Reduced Meals application by Friday, October 4. While California provides free meals to all students, this application is critical for securing eligibility for additional programs and resources, such as Title 1 funding for the 2025-26 school year. The state uses this form to determine which families qualify for benefits beyond free meals, and widespread participation is key. As a Title I school, John Adams Middle School depends on these funds to offer enrichment programs, interventions, and essential staff support for our students. Your cooperation in completing the application is greatly appreciated. Free/Reduced Meal Application.
Boys and Girls Club Morning Program
Cell Phone Policy: "Away for the Day"
At John Adams Middle School, we have an "Away for the Day" policy regarding cell phones. All students are required to turn off their phones and keep them in their backpacks throughout the school day. This helps minimize distractions and keeps students focused on learning.
If you need to get in touch with your child during school hours, please call the main office, and we will relay the message to them. Similarly, if your child isn't feeling well, they should go directly to the nurse's office. The nurse will assess the situation and, if needed, will contact you directly.
Thank you for supporting our efforts to provide your child with a cellphone-free school experience!
