Dr. Pepukayi's Update
FULL TEXT OF DR. PEPUKAYI'S SEPTEMBER 12 UPDATE
Hello TCPS Families!
We are wrapping up the third week of this school year, Transforming and Performing TOGETHER! I already have seen our theme in action around the district with students and staff enthusiastically immersed in their work, and I am excited to see what they accomplish.
This weekend marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month which runs from September 15 - October 15! This is a time to celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of members of our community whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The theme for 2024 is “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together.” Hey…that has a familiar ring to it!
To learn more about Hispanic Heritage month, check out the links in this update and follow the opportunities and events at your child’s school.
The Board of Education will meet on Wednesday, September 18 for their regular meeting, and the public is welcomed and encouraged to attend.
We are in the process of transitioning to a new platform for live streaming and managing board meetings, which we will test this month. We will also record the meeting separately and post it on the TCPS website. Thank you for your patience as we work through this process.
Have a great weekend and remember it’s always a great day for success at TCPS!
ALEX BOYE RETURNS TO TCPS!
Alex Boye is returning to TCPS this month on his highly acclaimed “You Are a 10!” school tour. He will talk with students about his experiences of being the son of a single Nigerian immigrant mother in the United Kingdom, his challenges growing up, and his success as an international motivational performer and author. He will perform many of his hit songs to amplify his message of hope, optimism, and self-worth. New this year: Parent/Community Nights at SMMHS and EHS!

WHAT IS TALBOT GOES PURPLE?
Talbot Goes Purple is a substance abuse awareness program that engages our community and youth to stand against substance abuse. TGP is a prevention initiative, and focuses on evidence-based programs and activities with local youth.
The project is based upon THP Project Purple, an initiative of The Herren Project, a 501(c)3 non-profit foundation established by former NBA basketball player, Chris Herren, that assists individuals and families struggling with addiction. To learn more about the Talbot Goes Purple initiative, click on the image or follow "Talbot Goes Purple" on Facebook.
Prevention factors for high-risk substance use include parental monitoring.
Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that is 50 times more potent than heroin, remains the deadliest drug threat facing this country.
More than 480 people die each day from alcohol-related causes.
REQUESTING TRANSPORTATION
Prior to the start of each school year, TCPS is requiring parents to opt in for student transportation to and from school. This information will result in more efficient transportation operation by providing the Office of Student Transportation accurate ridership data. Families will be emailed a link to a Transportation Request form in the month of July to request or decline transportation. Families that do not complete the form for each child will be opted out of transportation services for the school year.
Please note, parents with a student who has transportation provided as part of an IEP will not be affected as eligibility for special needs transportation is determined as part of a separate IEP process.
Students must attend their home school based on their residence in order to receive bus service.
Students attending a school other than their home school are not eligible.
Families can opt back in for transportation at any time, as long as the student qualifies for busing services. The TCPS Student Transportation Request form can be found on our website.
