Anglo European School
Bulletin for w/c 15th July 2024 Week 1
China News
This week, our thoughts are with China. The week began with a delegation of Chinese visitors arrived at Anglo on 4th July who were interested in finding out about English teaching and learning styles and student management, including our school culture, ethos, values, community and leadership practices and how these contribute to character development at Anglo European. We planned a day of professional development for them where they met with Mrs Gee, Headteacher and Mrs Latimer, Head of Languages to learn about languages teaching and our unique curriculum. They then observed Year 8 assembly and were greeted warmly in Chinese by 8C. They observed teaching of English, History, PE, Geography and RS and then met with Miss Whitlock to learn about pastoral care and the importance of Year Leaders and tutors in our education system.
Next they met a student panel with Mrs Porsz to discuss what the students most valued about their education and later discussed the leadership of languages curriculum and how we deliver teacher’s professional development with Mrs Peeters. The day ended with a student performance in Chinese by 7C.
The teachers were hugely impressed with the broad nature of our curriculum and the range of services we offer students beyond teaching to ensure their safeguarding, health and well-being.
This week, it is our turn to visit China in our first MEP visit since the pandemic. Mrs Nichols, Mr Arden and Mr Kamper and students from 9C arrived safely in Xian. Despite the long journey, they were up early Sunday morning and straight into lessons on the university campus. They were greeted with torrential rain and lots of comments about our party bringing the English weather with them! By the end of lessons on Sunday they had developed a range of new vocabulary and were able to sing a pop song perfectly. They are certainly enjoying some amazing food and local delicacies.
A visit to the Terracotta Army was particularly memorable, they were quite astounded to realise that 25,000 a day visit this site. They have visited a Chinese school and were very moved by how friendly and kind the Chinese students were as they supported them with calligraphy and sports lessons. One evening, they attended the theatre to see the famous shouting opera, shadow puppets, dancing and magic show. It's a huge privilege to be part of this very special programme that gives our students access to such amazing opportunities.
World-class IB Results!
The IB Results were issued this weekend, and we are very pleased to announce that the IB Diploma Programme, Career-Related Programme and AIB students at Anglo have achieved outstanding outcomes.
The IB Diploma cohort achieved an average of 35 points out of a maximum of 45. This beats the global average by a whopping five points and, when converted into UCAS points, 35 is the equivalent to A*A*A at A level; which shows just how phenomenal this achievement is. Four students achieved more than 40 points, the equivalent of four A* at A level.
Sophie exceeded the points needed to take up the offer of studying German at Oxford University and commented: “The IBDP is an extremely challenging (but equally rewarding) programme and I’m really proud of myself for achieving what I did. I gave it my everything and I’m extremely relieved that my hard work paid off. I can now look forward to attending Oxford University, knowing that what I’ve learnt over the last two years will serve me well.”
Adrijus and Amy who achieved exceptional scores, are both progressing to UCL to study Psychology and Language Sciences. Adrijus added: “I've loved every step of my journey".
Headteacher, Mrs Gee said: "We are thrilled with these outcomes and so very proud of our IB Class of 2024; these scores prove, once again, that our students are competing globally, at the highest levels, and holding their own amongst fierce comparisons with students from private, international and grammar schools. We are hugely proud of the work ethic, determination and academic integrity they have shown during their course of study and we are absolutely delighted to see them all progressing to their destinations of choice. The IB is a world class qualification which opens many doors internationally and is recognised as broad and balanced curriculum which teaches students much more than academic study but also enables them to see the world differently, developing ambitious, principled and highly successful young people.
Our IB Curriculum Manager, Mrs Porsz added: “These results are testament to the hard work of our students, and it seems especially fitting that we have achieved such fantastic results in our 50th year as a school. I have no doubt that these Anglo IB graduates will flourish in their future studies and careers, and that the academically rigorous IBDP will have helped them to be well-prepared for any challenges they may face. It has been a pleasure to guide them through this journey.”
Many congratulations IB Class of 2024!
Upper SIxth Prom - A Night to Remember ...
Our Upper Sixth students shined brighter than ever at their prom! It was an evening filled with elegance, laughter, and unforgettable moments. From stunning gowns to sharp suits, everyone looked absolutely dazzling.
Thank you to our incredible event organisers within the Sixth Form team and everyone who made this night so special. The venue was transformed into a dreamscape, the music was on point, and the dance floor was lit with joy and celebration.
Here’s to the friendships, the memories, and the bright futures ahead! Congratulations, Upper Sixth, you’ve made us all proud.
Lower Sixth Visit to Poland
Lower Sixth Visit to Geneva
Our Lower Sixth Form students are having an unforgettable experience in Geneva this week exploring the heart of international diplomacy and gaining insights into the UK's role in global affairs. They have a packed itinerary including tours of the UN, Palais des Nations, UK UN Mission – Palais des Nations, the World Trade Organisation (WTO), the World Health Organization (WHO), the Musee D’Histoire Des Sciences. They will also enjoy a memorable cruise of Lake Geneva.
A visit to the United Nations can be an inspiring and educational experience for students, helping them to think about various career pathways related to international relations, diplomacy, human rights, and global development and this has certainly been the case for some of our ex-students who are currently exploring these opportunities.
Visits and Exchanges Programme 2024/25
We are pleased to hear from students how so many of them have had a really positive experience during their visits this year from the feedback forms that they have completed.
We have taken on board the feedback from students over the course of the year and we are excited to share our programme for 2024/25 which we have communicated with students in registration this week.
There are some changes to the programme from this year as shown in the plan below.
With our Year 8 and 9 exchanges, whilst we cannot guarantee students will receive their first choice destination for their exchange visits, we have taken on board the popularity of certain destinations to try and better match the demand from students.
In Year 10, we are not offering short term exchanges but, instead, we are offering an increased number of long-term exchanges and cross curricular visits. These new destinations to Iceland and Singapore offer lots of opportunities to enrich their curriculum and are being launched as shared opportunities with Lower Sixth. Iceland has been chosen to offer a visit to Northern Europe which historically we have not visited as a school and has a number of links with both the Science and Geography curriculums. Singapore offers students the opportunity to explore Chinese culture in a different setting and will involve some mandarin experience, but whilst also offering those who don’t study mandarin the opportunity to visit a multinational company and visit a range of other exciting educational and cultural opportunities which will be of particular interest and benefit to students studying Business, Economics, Art and Science.
For Lower Sixth, in addition to the established Work Experience exchanges, we are also planning to undertake a Work Experience exchange to Nanjing, rekindling partnerships with schools that we have worked with previously.
Further details for all the visits will be distributed in September on our return, but we wanted to share this with parents and students in advance so that we can quickly start the process of organising these visits in September. We would anticipate that initial deposit payments for the visits will be due at the end of September in the region of £150.
Thank you for your ongoing support of the visits program at the school and we look forward to providing these amazing opportunities for students next year.

New Attendance Guidance
In February 2024, the Department for Education published ‘Working Together to Improve School Attendance’. This document lays out the changes to the management of attendance by schools and in particular, the issue of penalty notices. This comes into effect on 19th August 2024. The changes are summarised in the attached document.
We are thrilled to announce that First Essex buses have agreed to run the new 621 bus from Roxwell to Ingatestone. This will be a double decker bus holding 70 students. It will run in the Autumn term followed by the rest of the school year, if the bus remains full.

SPORT
Anglo Fun Run
Students and staff took to the field for the annual Anglo Fun Run, completing 1 mile or 5 laps. Luckily the weather held and everyone enjoyed burning off some steam before returning back to lessons.
Year 8 Cricket
The Year 8 cricket team played in their 2nd final in 2 years. Anglo batted first and scored a respectable 102 for 3 off 15 overs. Daniel and Freddie scored 17 each. The opposition got off to a fast start and although Anglo pegged them back, ended up losing with 2 overs to spare. The Year 9 team play in another final on Monday at Ingatestone Cricket Club.
Shetland Pony Racing Success for Grace!
Year 7 student Grace has been horse riding since she was three but training with her team, JPL Racing and Events since 2021. Grace often races her own pony called Calvados.
Grace and her team travel up and down the country from Devon to Durham displaying and racing at County Shows. They also race at racecourses including Ascot, Newmarket, Doncaster and Chelmsford and recently won at Huntington Racecourse in June.
Grace and her Display team were recently asked to perform at the Royal Norfolk Show in front of several thousand visitors over the few days. Grace was racing on a speedy pony called Hykos Bees Nees and achieved first place. She was presented her prize by guests of the show from the Ukraine and, along with her team, featured on ITV news.
Congratulations Grace!
