West Point El. Parent Update
Week of September 22, 2024
Dear West Point Families,
Happy Fall! Thank you for your support with our fundraiser. We appreciate all your help! We will let you know how much money we raised as soon as we get our final numbers.
This week is our PTA and Student Council Spirit Week. Please see the information below for the different ways your student can dress up this week to show school spirit. The PTA will be holding their Membership Drive this week as well. We encourage you to join the PTA and support the great programs and activities that the PTA provides for our students each year. You can also support the PTA by eating at the Syracuse Zupa's this Wednesday night! More information is below.
This Monday we will be holding our first Lock Down Drill. Additional information is included below. Please reassure your students that we practice these protocols so we will know how to be safe in an emergency and don't need to be afraid.
We have had a lot of questions from parents and students about our playground policy before school. We want to address concerns while keeping students safe. We would like to see if we can accomplish our safety goals and help students get their wiggles out with the following plan.
- Supervision does not begin at school until 8:35 a.m., which is 15 minutes before the first bell rings at 8:50 a.m. Please do not send students to school before this time unless they are eating breakfast, which begins at 8:20 a.m.
- It is our preference that students come and get in line before school. However, we know that some students need to move. We have found someone to supervise the Big Toy playground before school on Monday - Thursday mornings from 8:35 -8:50 a.m.
- Students may not play other recess games before school. We have had students try to play tag across the picnic tables and through the lines, play gaga ball, etc. The games are for recess when we don't have our student body lined up on the blacktop.
Please talk to your students about our new plan and remind them that safety has to be our first priority. We hope this plan works for our students!
Here are four things to know for the coming week.
- We are holding our first Lock Down Drill of the year on Monday.
- The parent conference scheduler is now open on myDSD. Please log in to your myDSD guardian account to schedule your child's parent conference. The scheduler closes on September 28 at midnight.
- Spirit Week is this week. Please see the daily schedule below as well as information about the PTA Membership Drive.
- Our students have been working hard this month to earn their September brag tags. Please continue to encourage your students to read at home and be at school each day. They have also been working to earn their first letter, "M," for manners. Please ask them about the manners they have been practicing at school!
Every day is a great day to be a Wildcat!
Sincerely,
Marjorie Conrad and Christie Bouy

Reflections
It's that time of year for students to explore their creative, artistic side for our annual PTA Reflections Contest. We hope you will encourage your student to participate!
Experience the Magic
M is for MANNERS
Our new magical manner for the week is, "Lend a Hand." This manner reminds students to pitch in and help when they see someone in need. 52 Modern Manners for Kids
Students will finish earning their M this month in our MAGIC WPE LETTERing challenge. They have been learning and practicing the importance of manners in creating an environment of respect, responsibility, safety, and caring.
Excellence Project
We will continue to include this information during September. We are hoping students will create a plan by the start of 2nd term.
Please help your student come up with an idea for an Excellence Project for the year. It could be something they want to learn more about or a skill they would like to get better at. The sky is the limit! We want every student to experience the feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment that comes from putting effort into learning something new. We have included information about the project below. We have designed it to be open ended so that it can be as simple or complex as you and your child would like it to be.
Mental Health Series for Parents
Our DSD Student Services Department has facilitated amazing supports for our parents this year. This year's Mental Health Series for Parents offers parents unlimited access to live monthly sessions and recordings, as well as key takeaways from each topic. Each session is led by expert facilitators, providing ongoing support whenever needed.
