Principal's Message
Dear Salisbury Composite School Community,
I am thrilled to introduce myself as the new principal of Salisbury Composite High School. My name is Curtis Starko and I am excited to re-join this dedicated school community. With 25 years of experience in education, including four years as a teacher at SAL, I am passionate about creating a supportive and inclusive environment where every student can thrive. I am eager to work alongside our talented staff, engaged parents, and inspiring students to continue building on a strong foundation of excellence that defines Salisbury Composite High School. I look forward to meeting each of you and working together to achieve our shared goals.
Warm Regards,
Curtis Starko
Welcome Back Red and Black:
All students are welcome to attend the Welcome Back Red and Black Days to have your school photo taken and find your locker. Photos will be taken outside by the Library entrance, weather permitting. Please see the schedule below for specific dates and times. If your student is not able to attend on their designated date, they may attend on one of the other grade times.
All Grade 10 students have been assigned a locker, and will be available in the PowerSchool Student Portal (through the browser). If your student in Grade 11 and 12 has not requested a locker yet, please have them request a locker in the office or through our locker request form. Students must be logged into Google with their EIPS username and password. CLICK HERE to request a locker.
Photo Pick Up Date: September 12, 2024
Photo Retake Date: October 17, 2024
Timetable Change Requests:
As our school population continues to grow, our scheduling has become increasingly complex. This year we have more sections than we have had in many years, that also means more options to ensure students can take desired courses. We were very pleased to be able to schedule over 95% of students in their requested classes.
As timetables are released, we ask you to review them and ensure that there are no errors. If you find any, we ask that all timetable change requests go through the following link.
CLICK HERE to access Timetable Change Request Form. Students will need to be logged into Google with their EIPS username and password in order to use the form.
We will be using the form this year, rather than having students come into the office. Requests will be reviewed and accommodated, if possible, based on the following criteria:
Changing level of course
Completion of course during summer school
Unfilled course request.
As every year we receive many change requests, we will prioritize requests and look at those that meet the criteria.
Door Locking Procedure:
From a security perspective, the most important function of an exterior door is for protection from the elements and to control entry for building security. Elk Island Public Schools has enacted a Building Security and Door Locking Procedure for the 2024 - 2025 school year.
All exterior doors, including the front entrance doors, will be locked, and opened only for student and visitor access during designated school entry times and special events.
Students who arrive when doors are locked, as well as parents/caregivers and visitors, will be welcomed into the office through the main entrance near the front office after ringing the doorbell/video-monitored intercom entry system. All visitors must sign in and out of the school at the main office, follow the visitor protocol and wear visible identification.
Cell Phone Policy:
Appropriate use of personal communication devices contributes to the safety and security of students and staff, minimizes risk to personal wellbeing and disruption to instruction, and protects personal privacy and academic integrity. As such, personal devices are expected to be out of sight during classroom instruction.
Student Parking & Updated Student Drop Off Information:
Parking is available in the front (east) of the school and at Festival Place parking lot. Staff and EIPS parking is located at the rear of the school; by the large gym A reminder that students cannot park in EIPS or Salisbury staff parking. The bus loop at the front of the school is closed for all parking except for buses and commercial vehicles. Parents/caregivers, please drop off students at the back of the school or follow the new signage at the front of the school. We have been very intentional about freeing up parking spaces for students so would appreciate everyone’s cooperation. Strathcona County bylaw officer will be informed of cars parked in unauthorized areas and those cars may be ticketed.
Grade 10 Orientation:
Beginning on our first instructional day, August 29, all Grade 10 students and any students new to SAL should attend our morning orientation. Formal program begins at 8:30 a.m. in the main gym. This is an opportunity for our new Sabres to familiarize themselves with the school, get a chance to meet our staff, and have some fun with a morning orientation.
For returning Grade 11 and 12 students who take the bus in the morning and have no other mode of transportation, feel free to attend and join the morning festivities.
From 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., all students are invited for a Welcome Back BBQ lunch at the back of the school. For the afternoon, all students will attend all their classes in a shortened schedule. See below for the abbreviated schedule.
