Research - Tips and Strategies
Information literacy from the librarian, Mrs. Sanford
Evaluating Sources - Fake v. Real
- According to Jennifer LaGarde (2019), it takes a true news story 6 times as long to reach most users on the internet than a false story.
- Proceed with caution before you use information you find online.
- Use the CRAAP Test - Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, and Purpose (see graphic organizer as you research)
- For Authority - check for bias using this infographic
- Common Sense Media has a video on this - 5 Ways to Spot Fake News
- Consider your filter bubble when you Google a topic - see Ted Talk below

MLA Citations
- If you copy and paste from someone else's work without quoting, that is plagiarism and it's not allowed in your work
- When you use sources in your work, you can use them in 3 ways:
- Paraphrase
- Summarize
- Quote
- No matter how you use your sources, you need to cite them in a bibliography
- You can find an easy citation maker here - it will walk you through making citations in MLA format and save them for you too
Databases - Where to Find Valid Sources
- NC Wise Owl is a great starting point and so is EBSCO
- Both can be found on the media center website
- Music and pictures that you can use in your projects can also be found on the media center website
