DRES FAMILY MESSAGE
3/17/24
Message from Principal Sanchez
Good Evening DRES Family,
We have 9 more school days in Quarter 3. Let's close out the quarter by having your students at school daily. Read more below about the lasting effects that missing a lot of school can leave on your child.
Please plan to attend Camp Durant this Thursday, March 21 from 5:30-7:30pm. All students are expected to come with a trusted adult to show off their classwork, receive free literacy and math resources, grab a snack, participate in a STEM and Art activity, and enter to win many different raffles.
Doors open at 5:30pm.
Plan to spend be at the school by 6:30pm in order to have enough time to visit all locations.
Students will need to visit their classrooms first for Student Led Conferences then will receive their list of activities to complete and raffle form.
Some of the raffles are:
Spring Portrait Picture Voucher ($34 Value)
North Carolina Zoo Tickets (Expires 4/2/24)
Gift Certificate to Raleigh Kids Art Gallery
Gift Certificate to Challenge Island

Chronic Absenteeism
What is considered Chronic Absenteeism?
Missing 10% or more of the school days. That would be 17 or more days absent in a school year.
Why does Chronic Absenteeism Matter?
Being physically present in school is a necessary precursor to learning. Chronic absenteeism in early grades may prevent children from developing the skills they need to succeed in later grades. Research has repeatedly found a “clear and consistent relationship between early attendance and later achievement,” including:
- Lower academic performance in 1st and 5th grades
- Persistently lower academic scores in grades 3-5
- An increased likelihood of reading below grade level
- An increased likelihood of needing reading intervention
In middle grades, chronically absent students are less likely to be on-track to graduate from high school on time. In fact, improving attendance is a better predictor of high school outcomes than test score improvement.

How can I best help my child to succeed academically?
Get them to school, on time, daily.
Cell Phones- Especially 4th & 5th Grade Students
Parents- It is a school rule that cell phones must remain on silent and in their book bags, which hang in their cubbies. Students may NOT answer their texts or phone calls during the school day and their phones should not be going off, causing a disruption to the learning. If you need to contact your child about something, you must call the office and leave a message for us to get to your child or reach out to the teacher via Class Dojo. Many students are not mature enough at this age to be able to hold onto their phones throughout the school day. If students have their phones out or on them throughout the school day, they will be taken and give to admin. Parents will be responsible for coming to the school to pick them up. At no point are students allowed to get on Social Media at school and will receive consequences for doing so, if discovered.
If a parent provides a child with a phone, it is the parent's responsibility to frequently check the child's phone to monitor what is happening on the phone. Monitor their social media, messages, and videos closely. We are at school to educate children, and should not have to spend a lot of time intervening with inappropriate messages being sent between students outside of school that are causing a disruption to the learning environment. Thank you for partnering together with us to minimize unnecessary distractions to our students' learning.

Family Engagement Playground and Meet Up Dates
In order to continue to build community, we will have Saturday meet ups at different parks throughout the county. We'd love for you and your family to join us to meet one another and provide a time for the kids to play. Reminders and times will be sent out throughout the year. We have set a time for the first one and will communicate the other times going forward.
