November 2024
Grateful to be at Gates!
I hope that you all enjoyed the first Intersession of the school year! It was great to see many of the students excited to be back at school. As we work our way through November, it is a great time to pause and reflect on all that we have to be grateful for.
To start, I am so grateful to work at Gates! While in my twenty-sixth year in education, working with the staff, students, and families at Gates has given me a renewed sense of purpose and excitement. I truly enjoy coming to work everyday and am grateful for the possiblities each day holds. Personally, I am grateful for my family and friends who ground me and remind me that each day doesn't have to be perfect, but there is something perfect in each day.
This month I am encouraging each of you and your child(ren) to write or draw a quick note to express their gratitude for or toward someone at Gates. It could be a friend, teacher, or staff member. Not only will this bring a smile to someone's face and help spread kindness, but research also shows that expressing gratitude has a positive impact on you as well.
Thank you for taking the time to read this edition of the Gates Notes & News!
Most Gratefully,
Natalie Miller
Proud Gates Principal

Halloween Excitement!
Staff and students truly enjoyed the traditional Halloween celebrations prior to Intersession. Thank you to all our parent volunteers that were here to help with the special activities or that sent in items!
Go Blue! Even Harley gets in the 'ole college spirit!
And...Mrs. Miller lost a friendly bet.
As a Michigan State graduate and fan, Mrs. Miller joined in a friendly and playful bet with two fourth grade students, Ahkeer and Reginald, both from Mrs. Trombley's room. Since Michigan won, Mrs. Miller had to wear a U of M shirt to school. To say these two Michigan fans were thrilled is an understatement!
Picture Day Retakes
As soon as pictures are delivered by Photo Factory they will be sent home with students. Any questions on previous orders should be directed to The Photo Factory at 653-3751.
Outreach East Sock Drive Was a Big Hit at Gates
Our Davison High School Key Club appreciated all the socks that were so generously donated for those in need! Shown here, Mrs. Gonzales from the Transportation Department stopped by to pick up our collection box for her daughter who is a member of the DHS Key Club.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
Thank you for joining us at Parent-Teacher Conferences. We nearly had 100% participation from parents and were so glad we could celebrate the academic and social emotional growth of your children! Remember, we are always here to answer any questions or concerns you have.
Birthdays are Special Days!
Gates students and staff LOVE to celebrate birthdays! Due to ongoing concerns regarding food allergies, medical conditions and dietary restrictions, Davison Community Schools no longer allows food treats, including cake and cupcakes, to be sent in. Some birthday ideas include: Small non-food treat bags, an extra recess in honor of your child, or a guest reader. Please talk with your child’s teacher about alternate ideas for celebrating your child’s birthday.
There are still openings for our GSRP Preschool!
It's not too late to enroll your 4 year old child in our free preschool program! We still have 1/2 day spots available. Get started by filling out our intake form. Click here to begin: GSRP Intake Form. For further details, visit the Early Childhood Learning section on davisonschools.org and explore the GSRP webpage. Contact us at (810) 591-0922 for additional information.
A Note About Head Lice
From time to time there may be cases of head lice in schools. Please know that, while a nuisance, head lice is nothing to panic about. According to health officials, lice are not a health hazard nor do they spread disease.
That being said, we do need your help in order to manage and hopefully reduce and prevent the outbreak of head lice. By checking your child’s head once a week and treating head lice right away, you can help us prevent and manage the spread of head lice at home and in the school. If live adult lice are detected in your student’s hair while at school, you will be contacted to pick them up and provide them a lice removal treatment. Your student is welcome to return the day following the treatment and will be asked to come to the office prior to entering the classroom for a lice check. If clear, your student may return to their classroom and will be asked to come back for a recheck in 1 week.
If you do find lice or nits (their eggs), please contact your health care professional, pharmacist or Davison Community Schools Student Services Department at 591–0913 for information and advice on how to remove them.
Lost & Found
Quite a few items have been recovered from the playground that remain unclaimed. If you recognize anything in this photo or realize you are missing items, please send your student to the Lost & Found area to retrieve their item. It is helpful if jackets, hats, lunchboxes and waterbottles have student’s names written on them so they can be returned when lost.
Last spring we hung lost and found items on the fence and students were able to easily see if any of the items were theirs. By doing this, we were able to reunite several lost items with their owners. We will continue to do this periodically throughout the school year when we get a stretch of weather with no rain. Parents are welcome to come look as well as the items stay outside for a few days. Watch your Remind for notification.
Attendance Matters!
Attendance at school each day is important for the education of all children. Missed days in many cases results in lost learning. However, any child who is ill should stay home. If your child is going to be absent, please remember to call the attendance line at 591-5000. If they are not in school and we do not receive a call, students will be marked unexcused.
Donations Needed...
We are looking for donations of gently used tennis shoes, boots, sweat pants and leggings for our Cardinal Closet and for the shoe shelf outside of gym class are greatly appreciated! Items can be dropped off in the office.
