PRINCIPAL CORNER
Dear OSES Families,
Our school just finished its series of Open Houses for the 2025-2026 school year. During the presentation, we aim to provide the audience with a better understanding of our school mission and what to expect if they are accepted.
On these days, what I enjoy most is hearing from families about why they want their student here at OSES. I think it’s good to remind ourselves why we chose OSES. Last week was School Choice Week; in Orange County alone, there are almost fifty charter schools. What drew your attention to OSES? What expectations did you have for the school? Is OSES a good fit for your student? It’s good to remind ourselves why we choose schools and hopefully recognize it’s a blessing to have them.

Several of the students have been working hard at Xtra math, and they have earned their trophies!
All of the classes are working on their class stem fair projects. Teachers may be asking for supplies for these experiments. We also have our next stem rotation day on Wednesday, February 19! Remember that our field trip is Friday, February 21. Black history projects are due Wednesday, February 26. This includes videos and dioramas! Third grade has been having an amazing week with the start of a new ELA Module and Math Topic.
In ELA, students are hard at work identifying Author’s Purpose, Point of View, and Text Structures. While students are reading, they are using text structure strategies such as identifying key words to better understand the text. Text Structures include features such as compare & contrast, cause & effect, chronological order, and problem & solution.
In Math, students are hard at work identifying place values of 3- & 4-digit numbers. Students are learning and applying a variety of multi-digit addition and subtraction strategies. In addition, students are hard at work applying mental math strategies for calculations including estimation.
In Social Studies, we are hard at work in our Regions of the United States focus area. Students are enjoying learning about the different landmarks and features of each of the 5 US Regions. Students in all classes are also working on an upcoming Black History Month Project.
A reminder that students have the upcoming Field Trip on 2/19. Please stay tuned for announcements from your child's teacher regarding upcoming parent teacher conference dates.
FOURTH

Last week, 4th grade celebrated Literacy Week with a variety of fun activities that helped students develop their reading and writing skills. The week ended with a special event where our fourth graders read to the kindergartners, sharing their love for books.
This week, students have been preparing for next week's DEAW by reviewing the key parts of writing an essay. They are also creating Bio Poems about important Americans in honor of Black History Month, learning about these remarkable figures, and reflecting on their impact. It's been a wonderful time of learning in 4th grade!
FIFTH

Fifth grade is going to have an awesome week starting a new Reading unit about curiosity and exploration! Our essential questions is, “What role does curiosity play in exploration?” While we read a variety of texts, we will ponder this question and hopefully produce some great answers! The text we will be focusing on this week is. “Into the Unknown: Above and Below” by Stewart Ross. We will be focusing on strategies to help us better understand this text like text structure, central idea, and Greek and Latin roots.
In Social Studies we are diving deeper into the American Revolution and the opinions of both sides of the argument. We will be reading about a number of patriots and loyalists to see what they believed about America declaring its independence.
Please be working on the STEM Fair Project!
SPECIALS
Coates- Visual Arts
Art students in the first grade were busy creating their Line Doodles drawings. The Line Doodle drawing exercise reinforces understanding of the Elements of Art and asks the young artists to use their imagination and creativity as they transform their continuous line into shapes, and objects! Meanwhile fifth grade learned more about the Principles of Design and how to use them in an artwork as they completed a drawing worksheet.
SIXTH
Masuoka - Physical Education
The 2nd Semester Physical Education students had the exciting opportunity to collaborate with Ms. Bravo’s Spanish classes on a special project focused on traditional dances from Spanish-speaking countries. As part of the project, the students researched unique and captivating traditional dances, gaining insight into the rich cultural heritage of various countries. They explored the history, significance, and movements of these dances, while also enjoying the experience of learning about different cultures through dance.
Every Wednesday, students are encouraged to participate in a fitness activity by running, jogging, or walking. To add an element of fun and motivation, students earn a foot charm for every 15 laps (equivalent to 5 kilometers) they complete. These foot charms can be proudly displayed on their shoelaces, symbolizing their dedication and progress in maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle.
Middle School (6th – 8th) Athletics:

Let’s show our support for these talented athletes and the entire team as they give their all on the court. Your presence and encouragement mean the world to them. Go ORCAS!
