A Word From Mrs. Loor
It's Digital Citizenship Week! This week, students will be learning about good digital etiquette, knowing their digital footprint, and standing up to cyberbullying. Please see the flyer below to join in on our spirit week.
The Book Fair is here!! Students will visit the book fair on Tuesday, October 15 and Wednesday, October 16. Our family night will be on Tuesday from 5:30-7:30 PM. The book fair is being held in the cafeteria. You may park in the lot and enter through doors by the cafeteria. During our evening event, be on the look out for a recent Franklin Alumni, Ethan Bush. He will be selling his new book called Dan & Tim: Hot Dog Man's Revenge. He will donate a percentage of the proceeds back to Franklin School.
The Halloween Letter went home in Wednesday Folders and was also shared with you via School Messenger. Please read below for those who may have missed it.
Tomorrow is a Single Session Day which means dismissal is at 12:30 PM. No lunch will be served.
Have a fantastic week!
With Warmest Regards,
Mrs. Loor
Halloween at Franklin
Halloween is an exciting holiday for children and is always a special day at Franklin School. Please read this section carefully as it contains important information to ensure a successful and safe Halloween experience for our students.
On Thursday, October 31, 2024, we will modify our schedule to run as if it were a single session day. Lunch will be scheduled from 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm.
Children may go home at lunchtime to eat lunch and change into their costumes at 12:30 pm and return to school by 1:30 pm. They do not need to go home if this doesn’t work for your family. For those children staying at school, lunch will be available in the cafeteria as normal. They will change into their costumes once they are done eating.
Please fill out the Google Form below by Monday, October 28th to let us know whether your child will be going home or staying at school during lunch. Everyone must complete this form.
All children who leave the school premises must return by 1:30 pm. When students return to school, they should go to their normal arrival doors and line up spots just as we do every morning. Teachers will pick up their students at 1:30. The parade will be scheduled for 1:45 pm. Parents who are organizing the class parties can coordinate with the classroom teacher to decide when to decorate the rooms.
Costumes
As you plan your child’s Halloween costume, you must consider the district’s Zero Tolerance Policy. All weapons are banned from school. The ban includes fake guns, weapons, rubber knives, etc. If it is perceived as a weapon, do not include it in the costume. This reflects the district’s commitment to “The Zero Tolerance for Guns Act” from the Safe Schools Initiative. Please help your children select costumes of characters that are appropriate for the elementary school environment.
Safety
Please observe the safety rules when driving your child to and from school. Do not park in front of the school or park in the crosswalks. The front of the school will be coned off for drop-off only. For the safety of the children, we ask that you do not pull into driveways to make a u-turn.
Please keep in mind that Crossing Guards are not here at 12:30 or 1:30.
Parade and Class Pictures
The map linked here shows you our parade route. Please stand on the grass or on the road in order to view the parade. Blackburn Road will be coned off like we normally do for arrival and dismissal.
All classes will exit out of the library door starting with 1st grade. We will walk down the sidewalk on Blackburn Road, turn right onto Warwick Road and enter the school driveway. Classes will gather on the blacktop and the field for class pictures. 1st-2nd grade classes will gather on the field and 3rd-5th grade classes will be on the blacktop. If there is inclement weather and we cannot parade outside, we will have a student-only parade indoors.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Counselor's Corner
This week, all students completed Lesson #2 of our THRIVE curriculum. The topics discussed were Including Others/Respecting Differences. Click here for more information about our THRIVE program.
For any questions regarding our counseling program, please contact Ms. Audino, our school counselor. Her email is laudino@summit.k12.nj.us.
Strategic Planning
The District is hosting a strategic planning general session this Wednesday, October 16, at 6:30 p.m. in the Summit High School cafeteria. While walk-ins are welcome, we would appreciate if you would let us know if you plan on attending the general session on October 16, by completing the RSVP form below.
On the Same Page: Library News from Mrs. Mills
We would like to introduce a new library program that will help us continue to grow our collection with up-to-date favorites. “Celebration Books!” is an opportunity for families to dedicate books to the library in recognition of a special event (graduation, moving up, birthday) or “just because,” in honor of their child. Please read the linked letter, or reach out to us for more information.
Throughout the year, Mrs. Mills will be leading presentations on holidays that are important to Franklin families. This year, we will present Diwali, Winter Holidays (Hanukkah/Christmas/Kwanzaa), MLK Day, Ramadan, and Passover/Easter. We would like to invite families that celebrate these special days to participate in our events. If you are interested and would like more information, please contact Mrs. Mills (jmills@summit.k12.nj.us).

TEAM UP FOR HEALTHY EATING!
Did you know that Franklin Elementary School is a USDA Team Nutrition School? As a “team,” Franklin School is working towards healthier school nutrition and snacking.
Team Franklin needs your help! Please be mindful of the student snack choices that are sent in on a daily basis. Many students are bringing candy and other unhealthy snacks to be consumed both in the classroom and lunchroom.
Snacks that are high in sugar and fat, and those with empty calories such as candy, cookies, gushers, chips and sugary drinks etc…, are all foods of minimal nutritional value and are not in keeping with our District Nutrition Policy #8505.
In addition, many candies contain nuts, or are processed in a plant with nuts, and may put students with nut allergies at risk for exposure.
Fruits and vegetables, low fat yogurts and cheeses, hummus, popcorn, low sugar snack bars, and whole grain crackers are great alternatives and help establish healthy eating habits.
Never hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns!
Kind regards,
Ann Zanelli
