Principal's Message
Greetings SHMS Community!
Congratulations to the 8th grade for amassing the most LiveSchool points this month and earning a dress down week this coming week! It was a close race between the 6th and 8th grades for the last couple of weeks and Friday’s pep assembly events helped to settle the score and earn the victory for our eighth graders, congratulations!
We are halfway through the first term and establishing important routines and habits for the school year. I am very proud to report that our shared focus on student attendance has resulted in an improvement over last school year. Students have been present more than 95% of the time this year which is more than a full percentage point improvement over last year at the same time. Thank you for communicating the importance of being in school, even when that means pushing through some imperfect situations or conditions. When students are here and in class they have the most potential to grown and achieve at high levels.
While we hope that everyone off to a strong start we know that some situations require individualized attention. If your student is not yet succeeding across the board we encourage you to schedule a meeting with their teachers during our two upcoming parent-teacher conference events on October 8th and/or 16th. Families have the choice of joining conferences in-person at Stuart-Hobson or via a virtual meeting link that will be shared before the upcoming conference dates.
This is our only five-day school week in the next three weeks so let’s make the most of starting the second half of the term strong and finding time to connect and regroup during parent-teacher conferences and the long weekend in early October.
Remember, you can always contact the front office at 202-671-6010 or email me directly at eric.fraser@k12.dc.gov to learn more about ways that your student can get involved or with any other questions or needs.
Warm regards,
Eric Fraser
Principal

This year, each ISR will include a QR Code that will link families to an OSSE-hosted Family Portal (https://familyportal.pearson.com/DC). The Family Portal is a user-friendly digital platform that gives families on-demand access to a video format of their child’s scores, parent resources, and student performance information. Score Reports will be provided via mail with our Term 1 Progress Reports. Contact your child's guidance counselor with any questions or concerns.
LiveSchool Standings Update
LiveSchool is our platform for tracking student behavior, achievements, and points throughout the school year. By earning points for positive behavior and meeting expectations, students are rewarded for their efforts in the classroom and around the school. These points contribute to grade-level standings, where we celebrate the groups demonstrating strong leadership, responsibility, and school spirit. Back to School Night handouts included information about creating a parent or student account so you can see how your student is doing. On Friday, September 27th, we had our first Pep Assembly of the year and the eighth graders had the most LiveSchool points since school started and earned a dress down week the following week!

Save the Date - 2024 Renovators House Tour - October 20, Buy your Tickets Today!
The 2024 Renovators House Tour will be held on Sunday, October 20, from 12:00 to 5:00 PM. All proceeds benefit the Capitol Hill Cluster School, a public school in Washington, D.C. This event began in 2001 when three Capitol Hill mothers, looking for a way to support their children’s public school, came up with the idea of showcasing renovated homes in their historic neighborhood. Their goal was to highlight stories of transformation and change, and since its inception, more than 4,500 people have participated in the tour, raising over $200,000 for the school. These funds have supported essential initiatives, from new classroom technology to arts programs.
Each year, generous homeowners in the community open their doors, sharing their unique renovation stories. The tour never repeats the same renovation, offering fresh inspiration and ideas for those considering their own home projects. It’s also a wonderful way to spend a Sunday exploring Capitol Hill, enjoying beautifully transformed homes, and supporting a local public school’s growth.
Visit https://www.renovatorstour.org/about for more information and to purchase tickets.
